It means it will be innovative  :P

Heh, I don't know what to think of this. The whole thing certainly doesn't look too convincing, but then imagine if he really did fake his death, made a comeback after 20 years and then managed to convince everyone the comeback was a hoax?  ???

I think it was either QFG 4.5 or Larry Vales II. I'd been aware of the existance of AGS for a while before I actually played anything made with it (other than the demo game).

None of LucasArts games are abandonware
Loom CD is, Loom floppy isn't.

Where did they ever have a press release about that?

I'd be very interested. I'm not trying to make fun of you. I think it would be newsworthy, thats all.

If you had clicked on the link LGM had posted you could of read the following explanation:
Quote
LucasArts cannot distribute the CD-ROM version due to existing licensing agreements with Mindscape (which is now defunct). Basically the company would still be selling the CD-ROM version if they could. To use this patch, you *must* have a legitimate floppy version of Loom - which is included in the "Classic Adventures Archive" compilation sold at LucasArts store.

So LucasArts still sell and support the floppy version, but the CD version has had to be abandoned for licensing reasons. If you want to get into some argument over the exact semantics of what "abandonware" is I think I'd rather leave you to it.

I buy adventure games cos they are better than other games in my opinion, they last longer and use logic.

Hey, calm down, it's called sarcasm. BTW, if you want to play S 'n' M (oooh... that sounds so kinky) and DOTT on a modern computer you'll need to download ScummVM.

As for Grim Fandango - it probably would be LucasArts finest moment, except for the dodgy "3D" movement controls which I've never been able to master (even though I've finished it and CMI a couple of times each.)

I think Home of the Underdogs have it:

What do you want to buy those stupid old adventure games for anyway, huh? $10? Surely you could find some sort of action game for that much? Or maybe a nice sports game?

Tablet? I swallow tablets. With water.

I think Pumaman said something like 98% of visitors to the site are using Windows.

Those Bovine's that crash my computer when I talk to them really piss me off, especially when they fart in class  :o

Awesome threads dude.

Heh, try this L33t-5p34K G3n3r@t0r: http://www.planetblackandwhite.com/features/cardboardbox/1337guide/translator.shtml
Hmmm, I know there's a script that automatically "removes txt style spelling" from the board, imagine how great it would be if we had that translator processing every post? This could be the most 133t message board on the net!

In a sort of related matter, has anyone heard the song "Monkey Island" by the 13th Floor Elevators? I've wondered if that's where they took the name from. It'd be pretty cool if they did.

This is a question I've been thinking about myself. Here's my definition of an "Adventure Game:" any game where the story is the single most important element, where all the gameplay is used to enhance the story and to make it more immersive. As a test, if you remove the story from a game is it still playable?
Tomb Raider, without any story, would still function as a level to level style action game. Monkey Island, without any story, if you can even imagine how that would work, would be a meaningless mess of random puzzles. Final Fantasy would be a dull but still playable game consisting entirely of levelling up your characters and fights.
There have been plenty of games that have used stories to enrich the experience, and there are games that have some adventure game-like aspects (eg. Final Fantasy), but a pure adventure game is built entirely around the story, remove the storyline and there's nothing left at all.

So maybe this is a special problem of the other Win98 computer.
I think I figured out the problem. I was compiling the game using an outdated version of AGS, and the engine shutdown event is only called by the latest version - so my code to release everything wasn't being executed at all...
I've compiled a new exe using the latest version of AGS. Try extracting this over the current demo: http://members.iinet.net.au/~snderson/DMDemo_fixed_exe.zip
hopefully you should be able to quit and restart the game without problems now.

Hmm, I got similar happenings as a-v-o. At the game starts short snap, then everything is quiet until I interact with bluecup.

300 mHz processor
160mb RAM
Creative SoundBlaster 128 PCI
Windows 98 (finnish)
DirectX 8.1

I should edit the first post in this thread. If you're running windows 98 you have to use winsetup and turn the digital sound off completely first. Please let me know if it works after that.

I've tried to install DirectX 8, but it told me that it doesn't support this kind of CPU; must be a Pentium or K6 class processor.

Perhaps CJ can help to get closer to the buggy part, because after first time run neither the game exe nor the winsetup exe can be started. So the problem must be in the common part of the startup code of winsetup and game exe.

Maybe you need some finalization code in your plugin to release reserved ressources. Writing this I got another idea. When I'm back home I test if I can start other AGS games after running your demo game. And I can also test if the demo program is running when AGS isn't.

I'll report the results later.

Thanks again a-v-o. I've already got finalization code in there. The plugin should already be releasing everything  and deleting all the memory pointers when AGS shuts down (called from "void AGS_EngineShutdown()").

I had another idea, how are you quitting the game? Are you quitting thru the menu or are you pressing "alt-x"?

I call my 3 and a half inch floppy "Mr Happy" and I call my A: drive "aye drive."
