General Discussion / Re: Wii

I'm playing with my Wii!

It's actually more difficult to use "Wii" in a sentence without creating a double-entendre than not to.Ã,  ::)

From the official site at http://revolution.nintendo.com/

"Introducing... Wii.
As in "wee."
But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like "wee," which emphasizes that this console is like a warm puddle of urine dripping down your pants leg.
Wii can easily be remembered by young children and the severely mentally handicapped. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Our fans are a bit like that.
Wii brings images of people gathering to play with and Wii on each other.
So that's Wii. But now Nintendo need you.
Because at Nintendo we like to Wii together."

I know most consoles have pretty stupid names if you think about it, or when you first hear them, but it's generally in a super cheesy macho sort of way. There's just something about "Wii" that screams out "I'm insulting your sexuality!!" It's hard to imagine a generation of 15 year old Halo players going anywhere near a "wee console." Maybe Nintendo is just giving up on that market completely? Leave them to Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo will focus on everyone else - that might not be so bad actually.

I don't think buying your music at those Russian sites is really any better than downloading off a file sharing service. I'm not too sure that any of that money is going back to the copyright holders. Don't they exploit some loopholes in Russian copyright law, I think they use some sort of a broadcasting license?

If you have reverb then you need to cut the trail off at the end at paste it back at the start for it to loop seamlessly.
It normally isn't too hard to find the end of a beat when creating a loop just doing it by ear. A few practices and you'll get the hang of it quickly. Failing that you could probably calculate the point to cut at by dividing the bpm by 60 and cutting at the next sample that goes into that amount. Also remember that only ogg files can loop seamlessly, mp3's will always add some silence at the start and end.

Have you checked that your sound card or motherboard doesn't have a MIDI port/gameport already? If so you could just buy an adaptor cable.

Actually CSound has been around for 20 years so it's more like the other way around. I've wanted to learn how to use it for a while now but have never really had the patience and have found it intimidating to approach, just don't know where to start.
You might also be interested in PD which is a freely downloadable sort of offshoot of the commercial Max/MSP. Even more highly regarded and complicated sound design/experimentation tools I'll admit having no idea how to use...  8)

I mean, you're not going to have an unattractive woman as your main character...

Quote from: Lemmy101 on my blog
So when we come to make a main character for our game. Are we going to go out of our way to make an unattractive woman with a flat chest, just to appease (admit it) a minority of people who may find it offensive?

OK, I take it back, I apologise. I had missed those two quotes before. I don't know if that was intended as a joke, I'll admit it doesn't really sound that way. Even as a joke it's obviously intended to piss people off and it explains a lot of the anger.
I don't think they need to apologise for or even defend the character drawings, but an explanation of what that was all about might be good.

Stereotypes are one thing. If this woman walks around drooling on herself and can't think because she's just a stupid girl, and the whole thing is completely devoid of irony, then that would be pretty offensive, sure.

But objectification? I'm sure it upsets some people but personally I couldn't care less. To be honest, I'm all for objectification I think it's great. Sometimes it can even be taken to the level of a form of art. I think when you sexually objectify an image of a man or woman you're creating a fiction. It's not something from the real world that could exist, it's just an act. It isn't real. I don't believe that stereotypes and objectification have to go hand in hand.

Woah, threads grow fast these days.

Modgegulator: I didn't mean to boast. I said that I don't have any personal preferences that make me biased against women with big breasts, for the sake of the argument.
If you think it's boasting when I state that I, being 25 years old, have been with at least one woman with big breasts and with at least one with no breasts at all, maybe you're just a bit sensitive about these things, for personal reasons. I didn't say that they were attractive, numerous, or anything like that.

The authors of the post asked for opinions, and I gave mine. Sorry if you can't handle them.

It wasn't about boasting so much as the condescending venom you had for the creators of these pictures and everyone who disagreed with you. You are deliberating taking it out of context as Helm did before you. The accusation of boasting has to be taken next to your inference that all people who create exaggerated pictures of women with big breasts must be pathetic nerds. As I've said before they asked for opinions of the images, not opinions of the creators. I really feel sorry for these guys, they've obviously put a lot of work into their creations and I can't imagine what it must be like to be on the receiving end of all this stupid reactionary shit. Looking at the first post you can clearly see they were really looking for reassurance after being shocked by the negative reaction they had had elsewhere.

General Discussion / Re: Midi Sound effects?
Mon 06/03/2006 04:10:24
If you don't have an SBLive you can use a freeware soundfont player called sfz and another program called MIDI Yoke to get Windows to play on it. Unfortunately that's a bit of an involved process to set up. I could go through it if anyone's really interested. You'll have to set it up again every single time you want to play something through it.
Roland and Yamaha used to make commercial software synth device drivers that could be used as an alternative to the Microsoft GS synth but I think they've been discontinued now.

Modgulator: as far as this thread is concerned, they asked what we thought.

They asked what you thought of the images, they didn't ask what you thought of the people who drew them.

and we can go our seperate ways without more discussion.

That part sounds like a fantastic idea to me and I'll leave it at that. In fact, I had thought we had already come to the arrangement.

It would be nice to read unrelated threads without coming across someone with a chip on their shoulder trying to drag it out.

Dude, stop with the boasting already.

It's nice to see you've taken the mature high ground here.

Is Valgar the woman's name?
I could imagine "Valgar" would have big breasts like this, but she'd also have a double chin and a viking helmet. They should fix that ASAP.
#78
Thank you, sir. May I have my gameboy back now?
#79
So are you done with me now, am I free to go?

I still feel that the original post I took offense to went beyond simply expressing opinions and contained a fairly obvious attack on the character of the people who created these images. You can disagree if you want.
