It's pretty unusual. Like I said, the only time I've personally seen this kind of effect is when someone creates a Windows Form app and accidentally misplaces the labels. If that were so, then every person who used that app would be seeing the same effect as you do.

Probably the only things that could cause this effect on you alone would be your OS settings, your monitor, or your graphics card and drivers. XP Professional should work by its default settings, and you said that the effect is duplicated at the standard 96 DPI dot resolution for your monitor. I'm not sure what it might be that is causing this, but the main area of focus I would invest in would be the graphics card (general incompatibility, bad drivers, bad Gfx software settings) or your OS settings.

What OS do you use?

I don't seem to have that kind of effect in my 3.0.2 environment. I'd recommend double checking on your computer's visual properties and even your accessibility settings (in case the magnifier is on or is being glitchy). If that doesn't work, it might just be your monitor settings (size, resolution, NTSC/PAL, etc) or your graphics card being out of date. Like what graphics card do you have in your computer?

Usually when I see text glitches like this it means whoever designed the Windows Forms interface just misplaced the label elements (or everything around the labels). However, since the editor works fine on my rig, Chris can't be to blame.

I'm guessing just update your video card drivers and hopefully that will knock the problem out of the sky, but frankly idk  :-\.

I'm developing a game of exteme secretism, and I'm thinking of making a particle system plugin that I can use in my next project, and every subsequent project after that as I so desire. However, I've never made a plugin before and my experience with DLLs is limited and, pardon the expression, rusty as shit. I'm going to try to work off of the AGS Visual C++ template provided, but in the meantime so I don't baffle myself, I have two questions that need answering. What should I be developing for, design time or run time? I want to have the particle system to just run based off of the classes I define and the functions I call from the DLL in my AGS scripts, not from a custom interface in the editor, so I'm assuming run-time is the focus, but the explaination of design time and run time is kind of ambiguous for this purpose, as the effects are felt in game (RT) but coded, modified, etc. in the editor (DT). Also, can custom classes be defined in the DLL and, if so, how do I inport them in code from the DLL. I've seen a few classes defined in the template but I am unsure as to if my own classes can be defined and exported with the AGS Engine recognizing them and allowing me to instantiate an instance of that class in code, since the classes defined were only standard to the engine.

The questions are probably self-explainatory and rhetorical, but still I have to be sure. Thanks to all who reply!

Got a quick question, possibly dumb :/.

Are function overloads possible in AGS?
Just considering the 3.0 beta, of course.

I finally beat BioShock yesterday on normal mode and got the 'bad' ending - which is the ending I wanted to happen :P! good game. god, I gotta set more time aside for gaming. next step: beat all my xbox 360 games. and go...

I've used VDMSound before, but I definately prefer dos box, more flexible to use and it runs everything. Especially good b/c the XCOM Collector's Edition doesn't work in Vista, *ahhhh!!!* so I put my trust to the original dos version and DosBox as always, and I have yet to be failed (at least with any game I've ever cared about!)

If anyone else is having hardware issues for the PC version of BioShock, Gamespot has compiled yet another hardware performance guide:

Hopefully Microsoft's replacement procedures aren't too cumbersome or lengthy.  It would really suck to be within spitting distance of the end of an exciting game and suddenly have to stop for a month while you wait for the console manufacturer to fix their mistakes.

Unfortunately, that's what they are. You might get lucky and get it back within two weeks, but they should really get more staff at their repair station. :-\

I agree, I sent out my old XBox 360 Pro (got 3 rings) in January and they took forever to send back a 'new' one. However, this new one froze up randomly for no reason, so I had to recently replace it with a 360 Elite when I moved down south to Florida. Stupid technical servicing!!!

I just got past the twist! It was pretty ingeniously thought out, imo. Wish it had more impact though :-/. Still, a great game this has been so far, hope to finish it over the next couple of days or so before my random plasmid-changes consume me!

Bought it and played it on Tuesday. Just ran out to Target and they had it, fun so far I got to the Arcadia, but I haven't found enough time to play it any further. Gonna damn well find time though :).

So I went to town to get it and here it is!

That 360 box looks so far f**kin cooler than the PC version's case.

Not much of a problem for me, seeing as I have Home Premium, but last time I checked around a little over 80% of people running windows-based platforms use XP.

As far as I know, Vista is only required if you want to play with dx10 settings. And since the vast majority will play with dx9 at this point in time, it's not an issue.

I wonder just how much of a difference there is between dx9 and dx10. I'll google it.

I'd buy it, but my laptop doesn't run anything that released after '05 properly, so I'll probably just have to replay System Shock 2.

And if anyone has never, ever played system shock or system shock 2, go to www.the-underdogs.info, do a search for em, and download them. Suffice to say, both games were pretty far ahead of their time, which is unfortunate because they became cult classics rather than the massive blockbusters they should've been  :-\. Hopefully, BioShock will aim to break this cycle on Tuesday!

It looks like the sole reason why Jews still walk the Earth today.

You'd better pay some damn respect, Jews.

Look at my robot face avatar!

Think I got that from selling my soul to SkyNet and getting cheap artificial enchancements? Nope - Cancer. I've been smoking since I was eight days old, and I will continue to smoke crack n' weed n' crackweed till the day I die! Be like Tyrone Biggums and go, go to your 5 o'clock free crack giveaway!

Nah, I'm just kidding - I don't smoke and never have smoked, and I really am a robotic traitor to mankind, hell bent on destroying every single one of you humans by peeling off your skin and basting the exposed fatty tissues and muscles with laser beams as you are left a barbiqued and screaming smoldering mass! I had you scared for a second there, though, didn't I?

I'm gonna try to grab it as soon as it comes out, but of course most of the retailers probably aren't going to have it in stock or unpackage their shipments until the afternoon.

How about we have a Writers Club? Instead of a strict contest, we each write something within a certain time limit, maybe even have a  topic, post our pieces, and then discuss them and critique them.  And then we start again.

You wanna be there to organise it first? I'm in anyway :). Just, how to proceed?

Wait, do we even have a contest devoted to writing in the AGS forums anymore?! I checked out the Competitions and Activities thread and there hasn't been a recent writing competition. Well, there's MAGS, but that's really just making a game as a whole - we need a competition into which grande tales can be weaved. A good story is important as all hell in an adventure game, and all there are now are art competitions.

Where the English Composition love at?!  :'(

Okay, I figured how to get the game to work on my laptop, so I'm going to write up a walkthrough on how to beat the game.

I don't know why but I find Microsoft Word inspiring. unfortunately I don't own a copy, which really sucks because something about it helped me write SOMETHING. Maybe it was the really good spellcheck or the blankness of it all. No distracting pretty colours. Don't know, it just made want to write. Jarte is amazing, but it's not as inspiring for me.

You can always download a 60-day trial copy of Word 2007 from Microsoft's website! it contains all the spontaneous inpiration of a thousand wild hogs doused in syrup and sent on a crusade against the pope - viciousocity, devoutness, and bacon for all!
