import / export?? what's that???

In the global script, at the top.:

int my_counter5;

in a room at the end of a interaction (that does work):

my_counter5 = 5;

in another room:

if  ( my_counter5 == 5 ) { bunch of stuff

and

if  ( my_counter5 == 0 ) { more stuff

The problem is that the game ALWAYS acts as if my_counter5 == 0. How can I change this?

I don't know if he's just being controversial for publicity, after all his games are freeware. But  I have my doubts since he doesn't seem like a neo nazi to me, and I know many. He could indeed be a poser.

However, I still don't see why you aren't taking this game seriously, I really don't know any way he could sponsor his message trough a game other than this. Have any of you tried the demo?

On another note, I need someone to confirm if the game music is indeed Queen's 'Invisible Man' (Everyone I've asked can't tell) because in that case the author would be very much a poser.

I recently found this while surfing spanish game-making boards. I'll translate the premise of the game. I thought it'd be interesting to share with you and see what you think.

Warning, this is probably very offensive.

"SS Super Soldier (In Production)

It's year 1933 and you're a German SS soldier.

Your mission in the first level is to stop the German communist terrorists and cripple their plot to burn down the Reichstag.  The 2nd mission takes place in 1935 and is about the Jewish Mafia in Germany. You will have to destroy the sinagoge where Semite ringleaders are hiding to save the German people from the claws of Zionism. The following levels will deal with the annexation of Austria, the invasion of France and the battle with Yankies and Communists."

There's a 5 MB demo availiable,
www.hyperupload.com/download/02de544b51/SS_Super_Soldado.rar.html

I've talked to the developer (He's Argentinian), and he's a nice guy, he's also working on a MMORPG called AGARTHA II that deals with the 'Hollow Earth' and the 'Missing nazi subs' theories (Imagine WoW, but you can choose between Aryans, Americans, etc instead of Orcs and Elves) he sympathizes with Nazism.

The question I wanted to bring up is,

What do you think of video games being used to bring people into political movements?

These low-res graphics may be confused by some as "bad" graphics because they only use a certain amount of colours and pixels...

I'd never confuse low-res with bad graphics. I really like old games style. What I mean with bad graphics are things like:

Or even that would be nice graphics compared to things I'seen

Hey, I just felt the need to say this, that picture is just perfect, in my opinion... the black circle, the distorted lines, the 1st person perspective go very well together. Fits perfectly in a game where the character is having some sort of nightmare, is insane, has been drugged etc.

You should really consider making a game with those graphics. Specially if you drew that room in 2 minutes. In half hour you could have a interesting game ready.

EDIT

In addition, the black flower painting in the background is a excellent touch.

Just to let you know I finally got a job after appliying in 3 different hospitals, so I will have less time in my hands to complete the game.  I'd dare say 1/5 of the game is complete. If at some point I realize that I won't be able to finish I'll just release what I have with a "to be continued" ending.

I think it depends on the genre of the game.

Survival/horror would need "physical" puzzles. Anything towards a "get out of X" or "find help" objective. Examples

-Breaching things with tools/escaping to gain access to other areas
-Barricading doors (There should be a time limit)
-Fixing things (Radio, vehicle, spotlight), finding the things to be used in these puzzles
-Just finding things like bandages, ammo or weapons
-Mazes
-Hiding from something

Mystery (This is just my opinion) needs much less travelling, and inspecting things closely.
-Give the player plenty of text to read/tapes to listen, and among it a safe combination or hints to where  to go/who to talk to next, for example
-Plenty of dialog, and something useful among it (Could be a item, or hints, or "unlocking" a new room for the player to explore)
-Put something 'odd' in the room, and make the player try to find out what happened once he examined it
-Following someone or just her/his traces
-The player should be able to inspect closely every part of the room (example- the floor of the closet) works well with a "I'm not supposed to be here" scenario

I know this is weak advice, but try to think how it would apply to your story.

Thanks a lot for all the help.

I'm allowed to write about any extremist group, as long as I don't describe them as glorious or anything like that.

I'm sorry if this is out of place, but no one I know could answer this question.

This is the insignia of a Neo Nazi (I guess it could be called neo nazi, since it doesn't seem to be very traditional) group which operated in northern Buenos Aires until last Hallowen when it was disbanded (Rumors say it's leaders were attacked by the police, since the goverment got a bit worried about the emergence of a higly organized, "serious" nazi organization)  That's another story tough, and I can't really trust anyone on these "rumors" since almost every trace of this group has been erased, and I can't contact any ex members since they're all seem to be scared to death (One even said his phone conversations are under surveillance, others wouldn't even talk to me fearing I was a detective)

So enough with this freak show. I'm writing a story on this group for the school newspaper. And I wanted to know the name of the symbol they use.

Also, a short poem I got off one of their inside "pamphlets" which was EXTREMELY hard to find. Maybe you can tell me more about this "mythology"? Is it 100% original? If not, from where did they take it? Who are the characters?

What does it mean?

"If the Spirit prevails,
Leonidas will be re born, the
man will step down for the
New Man, for the HERO
and the light of the absolute Individual
will rip to pieces the veil of
darkness with it's noble
presence. Thor will crush
the serpent, Balder will be
re born, and will start a new
mankind."

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Have you tried with Jed's Half life Model Viewer?

You can animate a model frame by frame, screenshooting each, then put them all together in a GIF, import it into AGS, and done...

You don't even need to own Half Life- just download any mod (http://moddb.com/ is a good source) and look for the "models" folder (Or the pak files in case there aren't any custom models in the mod).

I hope it helped.

Just so you know I didn't do these backgrounds. I was planning on doing it with UnrealEd but then found out that there was a map in America's Army which was exactly like the scenario I was trying to create, so I just took a bunch of screenshots and used them.
Of course, the station in the game won't the same as the AA map- otherwise you'd know what to expect (And the game would end up being a interactive movie) Doors leads to different ways, hallways turn in other directions, etc- anyway, the player won't spend more than 10 minutes in the station.

As for the feedback- yes the buttons will be changed. The cursor will be the first to go. The contrast of quality is really annoying.

As for close ups, those are already in the exe, but I disabled them (Yes, there is a noticeboard close up).

EDIT

This is what I was talking about.

(I know it's an "american" gun, but in my opinion it's better looking, and suits the story)

BASE 221

Some time ago I got hooked up with a bunch of WW2 conspiracy theories- U-Boats scaping to S. America, secret weapon projects, and the legendary German antartica base- BASE 221. I couldn't find any games based on these urban myths so I decided to make my own a few days ago. With the help of the forums and the manual progress has been quite fast- 12 rooms in 2 evenings. I decided to post here to

a) Create some expectation and curiosity.

b) Get feedback on what I've got so far.

c) I'm going to need someone to beta test everything when I'm almost done.

Screenshots: You can see the GUI and the way the cursor works.

You can download a small demo here. I removed the puzzles and most of the items to pick up since I didn't want to spoil the game. There are more rooms and a menu there too, but disabled- I'm not going to spoil the whole thing.

www.megaupload.com/?d=C3VCH5H7 (I think it's 12 MB)

It'd be pointless to say anything about the plot, since it's whole point it's too keep the player wondering "What the hell is going on?", much like the TV series Lost.

Please tell me what you think.

Thanks for the replies.

Considering the last 4 replies, now that the first part of my game is complete, I'm sure it doesn't inspire racial hatred. However, the objective of the game is not to talk about Nazism or racism.

The only purpouse of those 2 things, is to "ambient" the game in the historical period in which it takes place.

Maybe even to put the character in a position is which his ideology is challenged at certain point and he discovers he's a hypocrite.

So as many have said it would be a bad idea to parade racial violence just as decoration. So I'll keep the racism as part of a few flashbacks and reading material trough the game.

Also,  I'll be posting soon in "Games in Production" so you can check if that the swastika is not overused.

EDIT

I've made the post, http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=29675.0

Found the problem, it seems a screen sized GUI was shielding the hotspots from my cursors. Feel free to delete.
#35
I haven't done anything complicated, only this small cutscene, apart from that, I've got 1 room with 1 hotspot. Nothing else.

PlayAmbientSound(1, 1, 255, 0, 0);
StopAmbientSound(1);
int trans = gBlackscreen.Transparency;
while (trans < 100) {
  trans++;
  gBlackscreen.Transparency = trans;
  Wait(1);
}
DisplayMessage(1);

Still,

a)The cursor won't change modes, unless I click the apropiate button in the buttons bar. However, I'm not keeping this bar on the final game, so I want to be able to change the modes just with a right click.

b)The hotspot is not working at all. I've set it to display some cheesy message when interacted with, and ultimately with any click, but the message doesn't show up. I installed the OverHot module, so the hotspot's name is supposed to appear next to the cursor, and apparently the latter won't even "notice" any hotspot in any room.

Alright. Thanks for the information, I now know where to draw the line.

QuoteWhy would you want to put all that stuff? Nazis at least didn't parade around photos of dead people. I see no purpose for such imagery, unless you're game takes place in a Holocaust museum.

The game would take place in a German base and the characters would be it's crew, and there would be plenty of journals/diaries/reports to read to develop the plot. Hence all the racist text and maybe imagery.

Hello,

I was wondering what was the limit for racist material in AGS games (If there is a limit). For example, if the dialog constantly includes derogatory remarks about other people's religions, there's plenty of nazi imagery and other racist material, and perhaps a photo of a pile of naked corpses in a concentrain camp, or a scene with a bunch of 8 year olds strangled with barbed wire in the middle of the snow, will this game be allowed on the AGS games database?

Critics' Lounge / Re: My Stlye (or lack of)

My opinion isn't worth much since I suck at using UnrealEd (I only use it for AA maps) but I still have to say it: these pictures are fantastic. You are very good at creating a sense of claustrophobia, which is stronger in the 1st of pictures thanks to the darkness. And I love games that offer that sensation. However, I think it could be even stronger if viewed from a 1st person perspective.

Speaking of which, how are you going to deal with the character sprites? The perspective seems to change in every room.

I remember reading this post the first day it was posted. When I re visited the forums, like half a year later, I thought the project was dead,  but now I read this, and I must say, I wish I had your determination. If I start some project, I won't even remember what was the whole thing about 3  months later. Good luck.

PS do you know if it will be ready this semester?

I did try several arrangements and some fonts, in the end decided to go with this one:
