Critics' Lounge / Re: Band Name (and logos)
Tue 25/03/2008 09:23:33
What, you call these two big chunks logos? Just some font and a really crappy background picture isn't logo at all.

In classical terms, logo was actually only text that was shaped to be more illustrative, and no, it wasn't so much stuck in font. Today, a logo also means an icon which can go hand to hand with text.

I don't care about the name, I am no name expert but that shure is lot to call those to pieces of junk logos.... Think about it,  logo indicates the pureness and taste of the band. Right now, specially considering that your band actually liked it, it seems your band is just a bunch of tasteless kids.

Shure, you are at the beginning stage, but I suggest you develope some style and taste first, then make or ask somebody to make a logo for you. You know what? In a good logo, every quarter of a millimeter has gone trough consideration, you have no idea what thought process good logos have had. Right now, these two so called logos can be a disgrace to your band, they are part of it you know, create the imago. Get it?

Or... Are you more talking in the terms of album cover?

It is hard to give some real critics because I just don't understand what do you want, a cover or logo, imago? Right now, the small picture is a small banner and the other one I can call a cover...

However, I can give you some tips.
First, don't just choose font by looking at it, you have to match it with surroundings also. In the first picture, it is hardly readable on that background. Second thing you should consider that it is not a very good idea to put text over whole picture, it results in lacking any focal point. I would put a smal text on the bottom, left side, and use red or white. Third: I assume you are aiming at something brutal. Well, that font just ain't gonna do it. You have a few choises with the font: one, to use some blocky arial like font, or two, use some minimalistic or modern helvetica type font and make the reading small so that brutal image makes the deal.

And the reason why blood on the first picture doesn't look quite like blood is probably because its too transparent. Also, dried blood is quite brown.

Well,

I agree with these mac snobs thingies, BUT:
Both my mother and my father are graphic designers, and thus we have four macs so far, one really old, two 5 years old and one completely new. I am not a mac snob. I do not say that macs are better. But I can definitely say, that they are somewhat faster in certain things. They handle PS and these kind of things better. And I dont talk about pixel art. I talk about 300MB images or so. They handle FreeHand and Illustrator better. This software has been originally made for macs, if I am not mistaken.

So - Stupot and radiowaves - from your statements I can now clearly realize that we are just stupidly rich businessmen (and the money is well hidden so we cannot use it until we are dead), we go to vacation every week, I go to a rich private school and so on.

I agree that PCs are more universal. I like to have a PC. But if I did things like my parents do, or whatever macs are better in - I would no doubt get a mac. I agree there are many people using macs just for their image yelling "Look, I have a mac, I am cool because I am different!", but guys - do NOT throw everyone into the same pack! From what you have written, it seems that you are just as "cool" PC users as those "cool" Mac users. You are now doing the same thing as mackers do with PCs - complaining about how it is useless. You are doing the same, just in different color.

As Darth said - they are just different. Not more, not less. That's it.

That is because I presume they mainly use macs only for gfx, am I right? Yes, they can probably handle the stuff betterthan an average PC. The thing is, that people are just lazy to construct their own PCs, so the processor isn't dividing the recourses correctly, no matter how powerful it is. Therefore yes, macs can quarantee a quicker solution, but that doesn't mean its better. I am studying gfx also, work with 300Mb images and I still don't think macs are better. A good Dell will beat the crap out of it. You can work on mac as well on PC, but PC is more versatile on the hardware side and don't promote one certain pack like mac does. PC doesn't have the attitude that you have to limit everything to one single brand because it is just not about brand. Considering that Macs are turning more and more PC like, the brand limitation just gives off a negative commercial vibe for me.  And I don't know where you got that money talk...

Macs are for people who want to look professional and cool. But that doesn't mean macs are proffesional. Shure you can use PS, but you can use it on PC better! Pc has more functionality, its common sence. Mac is just all about marketing, the aim was that cool people use macs.... The campaign has been quite successful, I must say.

However, if you know what demoscene is, then you know better, there aren't much demos for macs.

Crashing is secondary. Every computer is able to crash. The real thing that gets on my nerves, is Macs attitude, it is supposed to be cool and functional, then why doesn't it have a proper mouse.... I am not particualry talking about one button, but the overall mouse... it just sucks so bad that I have to use Trust.

After reading this thread, I think I am going to make a game where everything or at least most of the stuff you can pick up, lead to something bad, like roof collapsing or something else that would end with death. Maybe that will teach a lesson to people who grab stuff that don't belong to them or have no direct connection with.

But to be on topic, one suggestion is that there are lots of useless junk laying around and you have very limited inventory.

A good time to have a wank.

I am against it just by the sake of being against it.

I always work from big to little. First, I compose big shapes, only using black line tool at this point. Then I set values, I use black again, this time for filling shadows. Then I use fill tool for general areas with needed colours. After that, its mostly just cleaning up the lines and detailing pixel by pixel. All in MS Paint.

In fact, there are lots of pixel art tutorials out there. And I also doubt that your interpretation of 'good' is a bit mistaken. I suggest you to take a look at some perspective tutorials and colour values of traditional paintings as well. just look at other masterpieces and watch carefully what colour where is placed, take your attention to the stroke level.

I would prefer to see a carrot instead an apple on my computer cover.

Please please please don't do it if its your first game and/or you don't manage to make it proper looking like the original.... I deeply apologize, if you can, though, even if I am not so big fan of sequels, especially fan-made...

Learn to use a bigger brush and less strokes for such basis, it makes life easier in the end.

OMg!!!!11!

Student David Bates, 19, suffered a broken pelvis when he was pinned under masonry in his attic bedroom in Barnsley Road, Wombwell, South Yorks.

His father Paul Bates said: "There was a rumble and then we heard a bang and my son screaming 'Dad'."

people die around the world due to earthquakes and he suffered a broken pelvis, what a tragic...

Personaly, I haven't finished any games yet, but I'd use as few cutscenes as possible. I like it when the player has to interact with the game enviornment. But I guess some cutscene is neccesary at the beginning, a person just can't stand there for nothing...
Then again, think about Half-life beginning, where he was in train.

it really depends on a game I guess. Does it have some history involved or is the story evolving around some instant happening?

Maybe put the character there to do something, give his friend some sentence that gives you a task and make him interact with enviornment that way and slowly lead him to the main happening which causes the actual game story. But this type of gameplay requires some more thinking trough though.

Well, I guess that was a lesson for you so you could learn to say "No" to some things... You have your own things too, tell them that. When you are tired, tell them, a friend doesn't mind.

And some noobs like to call others noobs...

An artist should never overestimate his skill and work.

Go to layer blending options and select multiply. You can control the amount and effectivness from there also. If it doesn't work perfectly, you might want to use curves or just add a bit more contrast (which shouldn't lose much information on such a simple piece).

Leave the bg white and magic wand tool is just pure evil, ok?

If you are so cunned and modernized, then why not make a brush, vector or a 3d... At least show a decent pixel...
Oh, and just to make shure, pixelart is not about retro, while some of the works might be, the average is not at all.

And yeah, i bet you are as cunned as Fool or Steve...

Right now I have it somehow other way around... I am the graphics artist who responded to help request... I do all the graphics but I begin to think that I need to do everything.. What do you do when its an interesting project and you have already put really big amount of effort in it and the other side is just... doing nothing, doesn't even show much interest...
Anyway, I am getting sick of this already...

Team members should motivate each other, not ignore or harass.

Why make a lock-puzzle? Its old..
Why not make him invent a teleportation device. I see you want to be realistic, so make a realistic teleportation device that works, but make shure to patent it very quickly before military guys get you...

Oh, don't be a crybaby! There are a lot ruder things in a world, you know.

Besides, I haven't seen much rudness in PJ. But then again, I haven't been much browsing lately also.

Oh, I now saw the tread you were talking about. http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/29962.htm# Sorry, but I don't see any rude comments there. Only people are asking whats up with 256 colours. You know, pixel graphics is always presented as is, original and it is very sensitive to compression. If you used more than 256 colours, then post the original. Yes, PJ and me wouldn't accept colour reduced, compressed or otherwise non-original or aoutomatically processed pictures.

And colour count does matter actually. It improves your sense of composition and you learn to get by with less. I remember when i started at pixel graphics, I was against it too, but since I abandoned that attitude, my skills improved alot.   Remember: limited amount of colours or just try at lesser colours makes you pay more attention to the colours and therefore your colour sence improves, you start to see every detail and evetually you get better at your art. Look at Fools pictures at PJ for example, he absolutely pays attention to every single pixel, and look what pictures he makes. Its not neccesarily the drawing skills, its also the colours! If you like just picking arbitary colours you miss half of the things.

But the true reason behind it is that with lesser colours, you can change every one of them one by one. Therefore you have more control over your picture and can change the tones very easily.

Oh, and Darth, so you probably spent more time than really needed on that pic, since you had to pick more colours and therefore place more pixels...? No wonder it took you 6 hours then.

Sorry, but I don't see any problem.
