It would mean people would have to pay for make a game that they may only want to distribute as freeware and then they have to make games to meet with Steam's approval. What happened to the good old, style adventure games that was what made the program great. They could make huge games or simple ones. It was available to people who were rich or poor. CJ still has the rights to AGS 3 I assume, so why not simply offer it as the free version and the new engine as the paid one.
That's Freebie 101 there rock_chick!
;)

No that's called sticking it to people!

I'd have thought that the only sensible approach for CJ to take now that he's all XNA'ed up is to destroy all previous versions of the codebase, and issue cease and desist instructions to anyone distributing his older code in any form including compiled game EXEs.

And in the form of complied game EXEs is insane, that would mean any game made from AGS 3 and before hand would no longer be able to be distributed and thus played, these people worked hard one their games and it's ridiculous to make them basically destroy them!

Is Bill Gates wearing contact lenses in that picture?

Who the heck is Bill Gates in that picture...
I can just see a lot of hairs and beards...

Oh c'mon wasn't it the late seventies? I don't know about beads but there's still plenty of men around these days with long hair. Yet it's interesting Bill Gates is one of the few in that picture without the beads or long hair but instead of looking like a hippy, he looked like a geek and he still does. And I consider myself a geek but I don't look like one. ;D

The main thing I want to know is once this new, renamed engine, has been officially released can people still use AGS 3(the previous version apparently so I assume it'd stay free, the last free version of this program I assume) to make games and because it is a previous version and was made before the merger can it still be available for download for free? Can we still use it to make games for free and freely distribute them within the original licence agreements that came with that version?

At the moment some of you will know I am making a game with that version and since I don't plan to charge for my game I want to use a free program to make it. Also the restrictions Steam has placed on approving games for being distributed would not work for my game. I just hope I didn't spend a lot of time and the others in my team on making a game that will no longer be able to made with the version I'm using.

I'm not really convinced if it's a good idea...

Ok, first update!  I've written and am waiting for Rock_chick to PM me her email address which she didn't want to share in the thread.  I'm not really sure how to start a contemporary urban satire, but I've given it my best shot.

The good news is, it isn't horribly inconsistent yet!

The bad news is, this is just the beginning...  :-*
Just to let you guys know I am going through some stuff at the moment and signed up a week or so ago and just found out I was involved in this officially. So I'm letting you all know I am no longer interested, sorry to let you all down.

So I suppose I could just keep using AGS 3 and then it wouldn't even involve any of these new changes but then I guess it wouldn't be the same when it comes to trying to distribute them via this site because it doesn't seem like I could.

Well it seems the Demo game that came with the program doesn't even have a background for the room, however I look at the other thread and have downloaded the one that looks far more complete.
However upon trying to run it with the latest stable version it wont run because of lots of errors.
BTW, off topic I realise but with all these beta releases, any idea when the next stable version will be released?

I'm not trying to intentionally bump an old thread but I was searching for global messages information and this thread seemed relevant. So if they're obsolete, then what(if any) is the replacement for using repetitive messages?

Rightclick on them with the 'fill area' tool.
It worked, thanks for the help ;D

I wanna sign up but feel uncomfortable about giving out my email address on here(no offence to the community), I'm just kind of paranoid that way. Any chance I can pm you my email address with the confidence you wont release it to others(unless you really need to),not that I think you would but as I said I kinda paranoid about these things.
In a nutshell please sign me up.

Once hotspots have been made how can you competely delete them, the colour areas for them especially?

I'm a bit worried by this statement -- AGS 3.0 already includes the latest DemoQuest and it seems to run ok. Is there anything you're aware of that's not compatible with AGS 3?
I'm not meaning to just bump this thread but came across this thread and this post caught my attention. I downloaded a version that was supposed to have the demo game but it doesn't seem to. Unless you're talking about the verbcoin template but I don't think that's it. If possible could you add a link to it or direct me a way to download it?

I don't know if anyone is familiar with the site but it offers interactive, online games where you play and have choices to make and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.
Anyway if you want to know more about what I'm talking about the website in question is www.zap.ca
Anyway I'm looking for similar games and/or sites, does anybody know of any?

I don't see how it should depend on the CJ's opinion here as the admin, IF it's not directly related to this site.Or did i miss the line where it was referred, that the planet application would be accessible from the main AGS site or the forum? If you want to do your own, basically I should think collecting AGS related blog entries would only require access from all the authors of the posts.

Also, we don't have a poll application on this forum probably because a wide range of opinions and reasoning is more supported :) So a poll wouldn't work.

Okay then go for it and I suggest you make it yourself, many posts on this have been in your favour. And it goes without saying you'd be the mod and have the responsibility to do all the dirty work if you're up for it. Perhaps having 2 moderators would be a good idea, might take some strain off the workload. Also one thing(if possible) if a blog is rejected could you tell them why? People who get turned down for things often like knowing why.

Open a room and take a look at the pane in the lower-left or lower-right of the screen, wherever you've defined it to be. It's just above "Room Properties".

Ayuh, it's not too intuitive for people who've gotten used to the olden way, but you'll get used to it.

Yeah I checked that out before but it's not allowing me to add any new messages, for any rooms at all.

I cant wait to play the finished product. It looks like it might be one of the best games made with AGS yet. And for those that might throw up a bunch of examples of other games that are better, remember I did say might!

rock_chick, thankfully SSH is talking about Global Messages, as Room Messages are still there. Which I'm very grateful for, as I actively use them in my still-ongoing-WIP IF template, and are generally still very usefull for less-standard message manageament.
Okay I understand the globally messaging now but do I get to make room messages? I can't work it out with this new interface.

This isn't a bug or error issue but something that has got me completely confused. In the old version there was an easy way to find the auto generated dialogues for things such as talking to yourself, etc. and a very easy way to set up room messages and global messages but with the new versions I can't work out how to do any of this. The only thing I can find that can help is the Dialogue area, but I've imported a game using an older version of AGS, 2.7 I think so my room messages are still there. Basically is this all organised under the new system. I did read the manual for hotspot messages but they just lead to me the dialogue editor
