I think that if we stickied every solution to common problems we'd have 1000 sticky threads. When I have a scripting problem, I either ask a friend or do a forum search for a thread in which my problem has been solved (which I believe is the common thing to do). If you give your thread a nice, clear title, anybody who searches for a solution for their problem should find it straight away :).

With regards to all this talk about standing in the community and earning respect, I completely fail to see the relevance. There's a technical issue, and you've found a solution. How does your forum "status" change the reliability of your solution?

Usually I've found that on the Internet communities just as in real
life ones there's a bit of a pecking order and occasionally someone
finds it easier to people to take notice of them if they do something
that improves their pecking status. not that this thread was an
attempt at gaining any more recognition within this community!

Well I may have be one of those few people who has seen the mysterious wiki, it really is hidden away so deep it's almost a myth.
It's like I think that's the AGS wiki.
No way man you know that's just a page on Wikipedia.

Jokes aside I think updating it would made it far more useful
and make people bother to read it. I think I lost interest when
I saw it because the information was so out of date.

However even if adverts for the wiki were slapped around the forums like Google
Ads escaping from their websites and are on the loose, my experience is
people still use forums as the easiest way to solve an issue. Why? One reason
I think is because you get interactive feedback and that means you don't do
as much work solving the problem.

So forget the sticky but would it be allowed as well as appropriate to post a
thread with my solution in the beginner's technical questions forum?
Of course it would be formatted much better and more coherent and I'll
try to give it a name that comes as one of the few matches if I user searched for
the problem.

Oh and I will try and hunt down the mythical wiki tomorrow, notice anything
different about my post?

I now think this whole idea is pointless and am not involved anymore, however I still hope things work out if they could.

It disappoints me that you'd accuse somebody who supports much of what you're saying of being a jerk.

An entrant can only enter twice? You're hoping that we get enough new people in that will contribute to this competition that two entries only per person will be enough to sustain a competition? It would be absolutely fantastic if this is the case.

With regards to your reputation going downhill because you support a new idea... I disagree. If somebody's reputation goes down, I feel it is more a case of how they support the idea, not the idea they choose to support.

I still fail to see the point of the activity, but good luck with it still :).
Haven't you lead this page and the one before it, Tuomas has on occasion been a jerk to me and has in no way supported me!

You know what I'm starting to think this whole beginner's contests is a silly idea myself, I'm moving on.

Did you get the idea from my bloody ratty?  ;D
If not, nvm  :-[

Actually he looks like he's got his paws on a red skateboard and therefore looks cute but since it is actually blood he's creepy.

Nice attitude.  Actually Tuomas is right: he was saying that the MAGS, which is only a month, might not be enough time.

I'm still not so sure though, I think 2 months is just too much planning for a beginner.  The graphics and design will start to go stale and people will lose interest.  Since beginners improve rapidly, you want to give a short timescale to get to grips with everything without too much future planning.  A new game is always motivation, and starting from an experienced foundation will keep that motivation going much longer.

Don't forget that people have made games in under an hour before (although terrible), and the OROWs (one room, one week) had a great turnout, and some of those were very highly polished.  A one room game is a great MAGS format for unconfident people.

If you're set on making a beginner's competition you can just not allow the same person to win too frequently.

Okay I realised he was talking about MAGS but saying a newbie probably wouldn't be able to finish within a month kind of supports my case. The attitude is because he was a jerk earlier and rarely seems to stop being one today.

An entrant can only enter twice so I don't think the same person winning too much is an issue.

Within 24 hours my reputation here has been rapidly going down hill merely because I support a new idea, it's a bloody joke.

Besides it's a trial run, if it attracts little to no interest from sincere beginners(and the debate ranges on as to who a real beginner is) it will have failed and be abandoned but at the end of the day it was tried.

It's 2 months you fool, MAGS is one month.

the whole idea of a competition exclusively for beginners is, in my opinion, really stupid.
not all beginners are of the same level and there's absolutely no way to enforce any rule excluding people who you deem to not be beginners from entering, and you can't even go on how long somebody has been a member either. i've been a member of the forums for 5 years now and i still consider myself a beginner due to my scripting ability being rather terrible, but perhaps it's better than that of somebody who has only been around for 6 months or so, or less than somebody who has been here for 2 months but has a better grasp of scripting... you see where i'm going with this? and it doesn't just apply to scripting either.
the current MAGS is non-exclusive so that anyone can enter, the only possible reason beginners may want their own competition is so that their "terrible" games stand a chance of winning, and that's a really petty reason. PLUS nobody is stopping anyone from following the MAGS rules and NOT entering it, in fact i think taking the MAGS rules and trying to make a game is a good thing for beginners to do as it means they don't have to come up with an overly original idea of their own.
Did you miss this part from his explanation of a beginner. Here's the quote from his post that defines it, "By beginner, we mean you have less than four months, or no experience in AGS." So if you've been a member for more than 4 months chances are you have been using it for longer than that but even so let's say more like a forum member for at least a year. Give me a reasonable example of why someone would be a member of these forums for at least a year and not have been using AGS for at least just over a month?

Also who said their MAGS game would even be hosted on this site? They can probably show their trophy in the forums and announce publicly to others they made it and it won, even distribute through various sites using that but anybody who knows it was a beginner's MAGS contest will probably not be expecting a stellar game anyway.

Woah, bit of a harsh reaction to a harmless joke, boys and girls. Let's not get too serious hey?

Regarding "only beginners" competitions.

Who is going to decide where the line is drawn between beginners and experienced people? What if a new guy to drawing or the forums puts a lot of effort in, spends hours perfecting his sprite, tweaking and polishing, and then enters it in the competition, only to have people disqualifying it because it is too good? That's not going to make any friends.

Not saying it won't work, just interested to know how you plan to define it with only minimal feelings hurt.

Entires wont be disqualified because their too good, only people found to be not real beginners will be and there's other ways to find that out than how good their entry is.

Thanks for the explanation, I was thinking along the lines of yeah 8bit colours, etc.

I ask that if Nagania's application is denied that she at least be allowed to let people know about his competition that would be run in the Adventure-related talk and chat forum, that he may be permitted to post a thread in this forum advertising his competition, this is because his idea is for beginner's and let's not kid herself, beginner's hardly ever both with the Adventure-related talk and chat forum, I know I didn't when I was new here and I suspect neither did many of our long time members when they began to use this forum. No other forum will allow him to do so in their rules and I doubt it'll largely detract from beginner's interest in our official completions and actives here. If he is willing to take such a big risk and put a lot of time and effort into it, then shouldn't he be granted just one post here about it?
#92
Um, how do I work out what 32 colours are(yes I'm a real n00b)?

You just made an ass out of yourself because Nagania is a MAN, perhaps in your haste to overwork your few brain cells you forget to check his profile. ;D

And why should there be a beginner's Sprite Jam or BB. What for? Sure, when certain users enter, they're likely to win.
Well for for both or any beginner's competition there should be clear rules that make anyone who is clearly not a beginner not allowed to enter for that very reason and usually it wouldn't be too hard to figure out whose a real beginner and who isn't. So if a non beginner submits an entry they are thrown out of the competition, their entry is void and then a database of these jerks can be kept for future reference, and very few AGS forum members would want to risk that type of shame. Plus most non beginner's would probably not be so pathetic as to stoop that low.

indeed graphics gale is worth checking out.
although... it never really grabbed me.... this topic helps ME because i STILL havn't chosen my program to use.

although i just got a tip to check out something called Deluxe Paint.  maybe you should check it out to.
Do you want something easy to learn or do you mind a bit of a learning curve for a more robust program?
Are you willing to spend money on a graphics program or just ones that are free?
Do you plan on doing much animation work?
What bit graphics do you want to draw in, 8, 16, 24 or even 32 bit?
Do you want to use a 2D program only or use it with a 3D program?
What type of drawing style are you going for, pixel art, realistic looking images, somewhere in between?
What screen resolution do you want or are making your game(s) in?
Yeah that was a lot of questions but armed with that information recommending ideal programs or a program for you will be much easier. And I don't mean just me recommending any, I mean any other's willing to help you choose the ideal graphics tool(s) for you.

Hey anything but the MAGS one! Please!

On the other hand you're the man.

I think she means:
"I have found an alternative solution to a previous technical problem. Can I post my solution as a thread?"

So we will have a thread with the name "The solution of the graphic deleting problem" telling how to solve this problem.

Just like the ones http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/kblist.php

You're mostly correct, I was thinking more as a sticky but if it need to just be a thread that;s okay. I should have been more clear about my intentions to begin with and I'm sorry for not doing that. However If it's a sticky people will see it be seen easily and people with that problem will probably just go straight there. If it were a thread and a user posted a question about it then someone could just direct them straight to my thread. I think the title should be more specific to the problem, something like, "Game crashes when the character tries to access his inventory". Of course this can happen for a few other reasons but if it were a thread and someone knew it was not exactly the same problem they needn't refer them to the thread link. I was thinking it might be good as one of those little ones but the problem is most user's wouldn't bother consulting it and just go straight to the forums for help. I'd prefer a sticky but whether I even get one of the little ones is in doubt. I'm just a regular member and I have little standing in the community thus far, so coming up with such  an idea could make me look like I'm trying to question more senior members or act like I've earned the respect they have but both are wrong. I just thought that this would be a good idea since many users actually do just a blank template.

Basically, if you give the oar to the Fisherman he will give you some coins. Take them to the Shopkeeper and you can buy a sword. Now you should be able to defeat the dragon (provided you can access the mountain.)

Also: Use the monkey on the nut. Get it? A monkey wrench! Oh, what a world.
What the hell are you talking about? I'm not crazy, I'm just trying to help!

Um ... would you like to go back to the beginning and try saying that again?

Okay here are all the posts I could find relating to this problem.

That one is the solution I used but it's slightly different because I only needed to get the three standard inventory graphics.
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=post;quote=445954;topic=34219.0;num_replies=2;sesc=805543635cdc3e2d960d108b4da75ad4
Again similar but does not include my solution.
And I had 2 but for some reason at least 1 was deleted within the last 24 hours.

None, except one but it includes other numbers so it would make it hard to use, include the most effective method of solving this problem.

Simply replacing those missing sprites with any old sprite and changing its sprite number makes the inventory window look weird unless you know what the sprites that are missing look like and why invent the wheel even if you did find out by designing similar ones if you don't want to?

My method is to create a game you intend to delete once you have imported the files you need and save them as they were in the game, as bitmaps. Start a new game with the default template, call it whatever you want and save it to your Adventure Game Studio folder. There's on it 2 sprites folder, choose the one with the most graphics and locate sprites numbered 2041-2043, export each individually, save them as bitmap files and give them a name that'll help you remember what they're for, I chose just the sprite numbers and save them in a location of your choice. Then go back into your proper game and import each file individually to whatever sprite folder you want. Choose the "leave as is" option to avoid changes in the way the sprites look. Then rename each sprite number that it corresponds to. The magnifying glass is 2041, the pointer is 2042 and the OK button is 2043. Now open Windows Explorer in your preferred manner, mine is the My Computer icon that is on my Desktop. Navigate to whatever drive you installed Adventure Game Studio on and then navigate to Program Files(or if you installed in a different folder than use the easiest way to get to the folder that Adventure Game Studio is installed on. Open the Adventure Game Studio folder and delete the folder that has the name of the game you created earlier just to export the sprites. Empty the Recycle Bin and choose whether you want to keep the saved sprites you exported, I suggest you do in case you ever need them again, you probably wont but it's a precautionary measure. Now you should be able to open your inventory window and your problem should be solved.

Does that answer your question?

I could write a slightly more thorough walkthrough of the method but the one I just did is fairly close to it Then again if you think it's too big or sounds like it treats the user like a child some things can be removed while keeping the essential information in there.

P.S The reason I left aligned the text is because lots of it meant scrolling was needed to read certain parts. However it didn't solve that issue and neither did centring the text, is there any way to prevent the need to scroll with the bits I've written that need scrolling to read certain bits of the post?

I am talking about sprite jam, background blitz and the colouring ball for beginners not MAGS.
I said that in the post just before yours. Maybe someone should get CJ over here to read that post so he tell me whether I'm allowed to do such a thing, whether I'd need to rename the games and if I could would it make people take me less seriously in the future.
