I'm happy to go with 4.3?

Do you think it's worth to make an SVG of the cup to replace the font awesome one? I'm not very familiar with svg. Do you need the colors that are used or can it be done with styling? If I remember correctly there's currently 3 different colours for the cups.

I'd love to use whatever cup ends up in the logo throughout the site. The only reason I use the font awesome one is because I don't have anything better.

I had a bit of a play with the logos on the site, so see what matches best. I feel the blue currently used by all colours is not the best choice, so please ignore that (I know it's a detail that easily can be adjusted).

This is 2.5. I tried that one because that font awesome cup is used throughout the website (e.g. in the awards) and I thought it would be a nice consistency.
Light theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?logo=25
Dark theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?logo=25heme=dark

This is 3.5. I like the quirky cups and the highlight of the letters AGS, but I feel it doesn't suit the new design unfortunately:
Light theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?logo=35
Dark theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?logo=35heme=dark

I'll try to add the most popular logos in a bit so you've got a complete picture.

Would you mind trying to make her face a bit more western, just to see what it looks like? I like the concept of what you've done so far. Or do you prefer to only draw manga style?

@lorenzo: This is so awesome, you should create the new 404 page with her!

Yes please! That'd be amazing!

If you can find a font that works well for both the logo and the website/forums text I'm happy to adjust.

One thing I noticed: While the logo colours and fonts are totally fine, the gradient around it looks terrible in dark theme. Also on light theme it might look better (at least more modern) without that glow. Can you link to the highest available resolution of this logo? Someone (worst case me) could have a go at cleaning it up.

Of course, we could also make a thread for creating a new logo (that uses the same colours to fit the new page design).

Oh it would be great if someone could polish the logo a bit. My art skills are non-existent so I didn't dare to touch it.

It is part of the design request I put a bit higher in this thread (together with polishing 2ma2's 404 design) but the sooner the logo can be improved the better in my opinion, so please feel free to give it a go Cat!

Sorry, totally missed this reply!

That's a good call, I hope it's achievable to match the same style. I don't want to put too much requirements on it; I'm already happy when the website has art made by the community! It might take a while before Miez gets to it though.
#49
Ah that makes sense! I could have been clearer on that.

Apologies, I now have added a screenshot to represent each image. Does this help?

Hello all!

Small update on the new website. AGA is doing an amazing job and I'm very enthusiastic about the result so far and can't wait to show it to you! It still might take a while; it's a lot of work!
But we haven't forgotten about it!

We could use some help from Graphic Artists, so if you're interested, please reach out!

More details here:

Hello!

As you might have read, AGA and I are working on a brand new AGS website. I'm very enthusiastic about what we have accomplished so far and can't wait to show it to you (it still might take a while; it's a lot of work!).

I'm currently using a few stock photos and I think it'd be the cherry on the cake if we could replace them with art made by the amazing artists in this community.
I don't really have any requirements, besides that it should look nice on both the dark and the light theme and that it'd be nice if it features a blue cup in some way.
Some of them are desktop only, but at the moment more than 85% of the visits are desktop only, so most visitors will see your art!

You don't have to commit to all of them, if you can do one that already would be great!
Of course your forum name - or whatever credit - you prefer will be shown below your contribution.

Please let me know if you need more detail than below; I listed the current dimensions but anything with the same aspect ratio would be fine!

--- FEATURES (#1) ---
The first image on the AGS (application) page, next to the overview of the features.
Dimensions 726x790, desktop only.

Light Theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ags.php
Dark Theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ags.php?theme=dark

Graphic Artist: Miez

--- REQUIREMENTS (#2) ---
The second image on the AGS (application) page, next to the system requirements.
Dimensions 1043x663, desktop only.

Light Theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ags.php
Dark Theme: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ags.php?theme=dark

--- AGS AWARD WINNER (#3) ---
If a game has won one or more AGS awards, it will be shown on the 'Game' page. The image is generic for all games and not related to the award(s) won.
Dimensions 440x360, desktop only.

Dark: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/game-details.php?theme=dark

--- AGS AWARD NOMINEE (#4) ---
If a game has been nominated for one or more AGS awards, it will be shown on the 'Game' page. The image is generic for all games and not related to the nominations.
Dimensions 440x360, desktop only.

Dark: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/game-details.php?theme=dark

--- SPLASH IMAGE (#5) ---
The background image on the homepage, behind the 'create', 'play' and 'join'. This one might be a bit more challenging, because it has to look good on all resolutions.
Currently I'm using one image of 1920x1080, but that might not be sustainable.

Dark: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?theme=dark

--- IMAGE PLACEHOLDER (#6) ---
When an image isn't available, this placeholder will be shown. Sometimes this is the result of a broken link, but it also can occur that there are no visuals because it's a mod or a plugin.
The image will be shown on these screens:

--- SITE LOGO (#7) ---
I'm happy to keep the AGS logo as is, but at the moment it doesn't look very nice on dark mode, so it'd be nice if someone could give it a bit of a refresh. It's shown on all pages in the header and footer.
Dimensions: 560x73

Dark: https://new-site.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/?theme=dark

--- 404 NOT FOUND (#8) ---
Years ago, 2ma2 has done an amazing job on the 404 page. I have permission to use this one and adjust it if necessary. I tried to make the background transparent to make it look nice on dark mode, but it's not looking great at the moment. It'd be great if someone could do a better job on the dark mode version, or create something new that looks good on both themes.
Dimensions: 540x356

Would you mind listing the default presets here? I never used the editor. We can then make sure that those are at least added. Making it a free format will be a future step.

Don't know if mentioned before, but when adding your game to the database I can only choose resolution from a very short list of presets, probably dating back to pre-open source engine era.

It would be nice if this is resolved in the new site.

That's a good point. Do you have any idea what the most common resolutions are?

Tampie85, amazing work! I think this last message of yours should be split into a topic of it's own so there's more focus on what's up to the community to do.

Regarding the mapping, I noticed the legal information may contain a bit of old information, basically on the license of things that comes with AGS, and what comes with AGS is changing with the new SDL based version. There's also non-current information on mp3 patents that have now expired. Is it possible to pickup the data from that page from a wiki or something ? I could update the license/legal information in this new page. The page also appears to have a mix of info from AGS was closed source there.

Thanks! Yes please on creating the legal page on the Wiki, then it'll be ready to pull in. I'll change the current page to make clear it it only applicable for Chris' latest version (I wasn't aware that that was the case).

Hi Tampie, of course! It's been a bit crazy at work this week but I'll have a go at it this weekend. I'll look at Snarky's comment too and see if there's a lot of overlap between these website pages & the manual on GitHub and post back here in more detail.

Awesome! Would you mind creating the tickets for the manual too, as CW suggests? You probably know exactly what to request, while I'm not so much into the details of the documentation.
#57
Oops... sorry, small misunderstanding with AGA. With 'Wiki' he meant it should live somewhere where it can be maintained by the community.

By all means, don't duplicate data. Do you have a link to the manual? Happy to add it somewhere in the redesign.

Who should I ask to add stuff to the manual, to make sure it doesn't get lost?

As for the stuff with no current relevance, AGA says he doesn't want to delete anything and that it should be kept somewhere for historical interest.
I don't think it should live somewhere on the site? Or do you disagree?

===== UPDATE =====

I absolutely love your ideas to improve the site (bookmarking, modules/plugin search, proactive reviews, mags, dark theme, etc.).
EDIT:
The redesign is now available in dark theme too. The paths are added in the below mentioned URL. Don't use the menu to navigate, you'll lose the dark theme.

To make sure the redesign doesn't end up in a never ending project, I decided to focus only on existing pages/functionality and put the improvements on a list that can be looked at after initial go live.

And I think I'm finished with the redesign :-D

You still should be able to navigate using the menu, but I also made a list of all pages, and the scenarios I could think of, which gives you a better image:

===== HELP WANTED =====

Design Review
Please keep your feedback on the design coming. I validated every page/scenario with W3C HTML validator and looked at it in mobile, tablet and desktop view using Chrome Dev Tools.
Post it in this thread if something looks odd/doesn't work/is unclear on a certain device/browser.

Content review
We would really appreciate if you review the content on the redesign on, i.e.:

  • Is it up to date?
  • Is it complete?
  • Does the sequence make sense? (e.g. filter/sort on the search page, or the specs list at the top of the game details page, or the links in the menu/footer)
Please post your suggested changes in this thread.

Images
It would be amazing if someone can help us with creating custom images to make the site look even better. These are the ones I think we need:

  • Splash - full screen image with transparency to keep the text readable. Likely need a few versions to make sure it looks good on the most popular screen sizes. (Homepage)
  • AGS Screenshots - Do we want plain screenshots or something fancier like on the current homepage? (Homepage - AGS)
  • Image not found (Search - Game Details)
  • Awards (Game Details - Ratings)
  • Panel/Pick (Game Details - Ratings)
  • User Rating (Game Details - Ratings)
  • Features (AGS)
  • Requirements (AGS)

Looking forward to see the feedback and can't wait to see the site with suitable images!  :-D

Sorry to hear it doesn't work in  the browser you want to use.

Thank you  :) I have a website to practice the PHP AGA taught me, but besides that I have no experience in web design. I guess watching professionals for years paid off.

I think I have good news too and managed to fix the splash page on mobile landscape and small devices. Fingers crossed. It'll be in the next release.
