Title: Forum upgrade
Post by: AGA on Wed 25/04/2012 23:47:12
The forums are now upgraded.  I'm nowhere near finished though, so it's quite likely there are little niggles here and there.  Plus a lot of the special little hacks CJ put in are missing.  I'm planning to put most of them back in (and more!), but upgrading took ages, and I'm too tired to do more today!

All the text is now centered in a post.

First one :-)
Darn, too late.

Good work, I really like it. Looks nice and cleaned up. But one thing that's still bothering me: Would you please consider turning off the wait time between the logins? I tend to forget my password and waiting to log in again is somewhat annoying and not quite common anymore.

The map is back!

To celebrate, I put my pin exactly where I am now. Don't you identity theft me.

Edit: Though, weirdly, the pin points to Scotland until you zoom all the way in. I guess that's Google's fault though?

Thanks for doing the upgrade, AGA!

Yep the text centring needs to be fixed, also the "AGS Forums >> AGS Development >> Bug Reports" bit is no longer clickable, you used to be able to click one of the bits to take you to that part of the forum.

Other than that, looking good -- nice job!

I did inspect the centered text bug, maybe you save some time this way.

The problem comes from the first div inside #main_content_section . It has an old attribute (align="center") that should be replaced by 'style="margin:auto"' (or nothing at all, seems to work pretty well without for me).

Is all the text supposed to be centred?

Looks nice and fancy.
Now of course the vertical size is even larger now. I only get the Community and AGS Support at the top. Everything else is beyond my vertical resolution of 900. I hate scrolling. ;)

Looks good, but....
Does the new board software include alternate layout options? There's a huge amount of dead space at the moment.

Yeah, everything seems really BIG, there's quite a bit of whitespace.

Good job though! Everything looks so clean and shiny!

I like that the 'recent posts' link is now at the top since i'm always on that page. I also like the map and i've added my pin :D

This centered text is killing me! D:

And yeah, everything is big, and too much white, the side bar grain is too... Grain.

Site reminds me of this now. :P

Good job with the forum upgrade!

p.s. read the topics at the bottom, to find out that the text will be sorted out, because poor AGA was too tired today. There is more stuff, like the links back don't work etc., but it'll be dealt with in time.

Look what I can do?  ;D

Nice work AGA.  I like the colours.  Apart from the centered text and dead space I haven't got a problem.  Can't wait for the new smilies to be introduced though.  The old ones look so out of place.  I may have dreamed this, but did I read that we'll be able to have larger avatars?  That would be cool. Although saying that, it would force even more dead space into the posts.

[edit]
Oh, about the new smilies.  It seems they are appearing in the posts, but not all of them have been updated in the bit where I can choose which one I want.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: nihilyst on Thu 26/04/2012 01:21:12
Looks great. Although I can't help but think that the
Quotequote-box
should look as if it went into the panel instead of coming out of it (or have no graphical effect on it at all). Now it looks like a button and I'm constantly trying to click it :D

I'd favour another theme where the width of the board is yet smaller.

EDIT: Right on top of the "mark all topics as read"-button there is an empty button doing nothing.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Khris on Thu 26/04/2012 01:23:04
I'm not so sure yet, but I'll get around to liking it eventually :)
The centered text can't be intentional, surely that's just an erroneous stylesheet rule somewhere.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade

It would also be nice if I could actually view my own profile rather than be forced to look at it in edit mode.

I have already mentioned the centered text. CJ says it will have to be fixed. I will get used to this eventually. :-)
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Gilbert on Thu 26/04/2012 02:18:39
It seems that when you click the "new" button of a thread the first unread post of the thread is not displayed in another colour like before. I actually rely on this to determine which posts are new to me. (I know that upon clicking "new" the thread will be positioned such that such post would be the first on screen, but for some reasons I don't pay attention to this most of the time.

1) Can somebody take a screenshot and show me what you mean by "dead space"?  I tried to keep it to a minimum!  Are you referring to all the white-space up near the 'news' announcements?  When there aren't news announcements that area is MUCH more condensed!

2) You weren't dreaming!  The avatar sizes will be increased to 120x120 (double the current size).  It really doesn't add more spacing to the side though so don't worry about that!

Yeah, it actually is the same CSS as the buttons!  I did it quickly, liked how it looked, so didn't change it!  But it's an easy fix/change.

There are BIG ideas in the works for themes... stay tuned :)

There are several things that will be changing in the days to come as we fine-tune the new layout.

Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Gilbert on Thu 26/04/2012 02:30:06
There is also no quick link to the wiki atm. (I think we should have this in the new AGS main page too.)
Also, my forum time is messed up initially, making my time 1 hour ahead of what should be. My Time Zone is GMT +8 but we don't have daylight saving here, which is possibly the cause. After clicking "auto detect" in profile setting it's changed to 7, which shows the correct time now. I think it will be incorrect again some time later.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Darth Mandarb on Thu 26/04/2012 02:33:19
Quick list of missing/wrong things I've come across:

  • all text appears to be centered (board headings, titles, posts, etc)
  • the 'new' image (for new threads) isn't updated (I think this is because the language isn't selected the same as on your server)
  • avatars sizes are 60x60
  • forum width appears to be 95% (was set at 98% on the test server)
  • forum links (right above posts) are acting very strange (I think an anchor tag was left unclosed or something)
  • categories/boards order is way off
  • footer CSS is off (the blocks are being covered by a white box)
  • normal_post_locked.gif isn't updated like the rest (yabb/themes/ags/images/topic/normal_post_locked.gif) - should be in the .zip I sent!
  • news area CSS is different from what we had on the test server (might be intentional?)

I'll keep looking!  But for the most part the upgrade appears to have gone extremely well!  Great job and thanks for the hard work!!

One suggestion, since you guys are about to be editing a few things, is to hide the version number of SMF that's running. It's been my experience that few people care about versions of CMS/forum/webapps unless they're looking for exploits.

There are some serious issues with the few divs showing up as a link with the finger cursor and all. For instance, the whole Search div lights up all the text within that div as your mouse is over it. Very overkill and confusing for no reason at all - making me think it was all a link. Also all the board divs on the forum index show up as a link as well, but don't change any text or the background nor act as a link to enter that board. (edit: I've discovered it highlights the AGS Forums text at the top of the index. Also the graphics and text indicating what a new post, read post, etc look like highlight as well. Also a blank button appears above the "Mark all messages as read" button)

I'm using Firefox 12.

I also don't overly like the font used in the code display. Mostly just when it's bold. It's too horizontally squished together, grouping characters making it hard to read. But also happens when it's not bold as well, it just isn't as bad.

Also is there any chance the Smilies Alt text could show the text format along with the name? eg:  Wink  ;)

Edit: I like these being at the top:
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.

Could it be possible to add a: Show threads created by you.
It's a feature I've always wanted.
I also like how you've incorporated the "by user" search feature (which could be used as the way to find your own threads, but I'd still prefer hard linking).

Yeah, everything looks so clean and bright now :) I don't mind the centered text (for now), but the AGS Games section being near the bottom of the page still looks weird. But what's really creepy is the influx of spammers. "Cause of Whitney Huston's death" in Completed Games? Really? We should have some adventure games related question in the registration form. I saw this idea implemented in a fun way on some math/science forum - they had the new users solve some equation and give the solution in the box. That sort of thing would maybe keep Russian marital services and things like that away from this board.

Two suggestions regarding the stylesheet:

blockquotes have a font-size of 11px, which is a good deal larger than the old style, which I really liked. Maybe 10px instead, or even 9px?

The .post class has a min-height of 120px, which blows up short posts unnecessarily. Maybe a margin-bottom: 1em; instead?

Edit: Also, I just noticed that clicking a link doesn't open it in a new window/tab by default.

I know that quite a few people have mentioned it, but seriously not having the breadcrumb links working is making the forums nearly unbrowsable for me (I either have to go "Home" or "Jump to" the forum...ugh ;)). Please fix it! :=

Beyond that, it's certainly different. Seems less stylistic than the old forums, but certainly has a more modern feeling to it.

Updates so far:

Important note; your current avatars will be automatically resized to 120x120 (though the header avatar display will remain at 60x60 for space considerations).  You'll need to update accordingly if you no longer like how it looks!  You can also just take the existing image and add the spacing around it to make the file 120x120 (but keeping the image 60x60 as you're used to it).  Or take advantage of the FREEDOM that double-size grants you :)

Why is that? :/ It's a probably a relatively good thing that you can use avatars bigger than 120x120 and they get scaled down to fit (though most often they don't look good that way), but I never liked that avatars smaller than the allowed size got upscaled. Wouldn't it be better to not resize the avatars unless they're too big, or to never resize them and just not allow any avatars bigger than 120x120?

Looks really good! I'm glad the overall flavour of the old forums has been retained.

However I'm not too sure about the gradient behind the board titles, and at the bottom. I find it looks better if it's just a uniform colour. Or maybe make them a bit lighter? The colour seems quite harsh compared to the rest of the forum colours which are softer. The text in the posts/topics column seems a bit crowded.

Some minor bug things:

• Collapsing forum sections causes the title text to align at the top of the cell
• The "Warning - while you were typing" box, and the 'mark all messages as read' button, has no padding at the top

This is, sadly, something the forum software does automatically (seems an oversight to me).  I have been toying around with...

Quote from: Peder Johnsen+ on Thu 26/04/2012 17:59:05This can be achieved by using CSS using the max-height and max-width options.
... for awhile but there are so many places where the avatars are displayed and, to be honest, the CSS that comes with the software is a mess!  One big problem with the max- attributes is that there are some older versions of browsers that don't support these attributes and anybody viewing the forums [with those older browsers) might end up seeing some HUGE avatars!

Quote from: Atelier on Thu 26/04/2012 17:22:34However I'm not too sure about the gradient behind the board titles, and at the bottom. I find it looks better if it's just a uniform colour. Or maybe make them a bit lighter? The colour seems quite harsh compared to the rest of the forum colours which are softer. The text in the posts/topics column seems a bit crowded.
We really went 'round and 'round with this (well I did) ... in the end we decided this "fit" better.  I really like the contrast personally (and think it looks great) but if the forum consensus is that it should change it can be updated.

Quote from: Atelier on Thu 26/04/2012 17:22:34• Collapsing forum sections causes the title text to align at the top of the cell
• The "Warning - while you were typing" box, and the 'mark all messages as read' button, has no padding at the top
The collapsing issue I noticed during testing and no matter what I've tried it just doesn't seem to want to align itself properly... I'm thinking it might be some kind of internal bug in the software.  I just couldn't track that sucker down!  It only does it on initial collapse; once you navigate/refresh it aligns properly (and stays aligned properly) so I considered it low priority :)

The padding issue on the "mark all as read" button is fixed/updated.  The other one will take a little more doing... but I'm on it :)

You had asked what people meant by it being "bloated". Here's some of the things I'd like to point out on the index alone (home).

Here's where a lot of padding is located. It's quite useless and I'd rather see more of the forum vertically than have all of this padding everywhere.
(http://www.bryvis.com/entertainment/other/agsf/website/forum_adjustments_highlights.png)Click to enlarge (http://www.bryvis.com/entertainment/other/agsf/website/forum_adjustments_highlights.png)

Here's a quick adjustment of the AGS Games section only. How it could be improved to better fit on everyone's screens without scrolling a ton.
(http://www.bryvis.com/entertainment/other/agsf/website/forum_adjustments.png)Click to enlarge (http://www.bryvis.com/entertainment/other/agsf/website/forum_adjustments.png)

That's one thing I've always noticed about your websites is that you add a lot of padding around everything. I'm not saying I don't like your websites, I definitely do. I just know you could tone down on the padding quite a bit. I might have gone to the extreme, but I wouldn't add much more than 2 pixels on each of these boards.

If you want, I could also show an edit from within a thread as well. I also don't like the new large avatars, mainly because there is a TON of useless space whenever you have someone like AGA with all his:
Adventure Game Aficionado
Mittician
Administrator
Member

Then his Post count. Then his quote. Then where he's willing to help people. Then his social connections. All of which take up their own row.
Like this post: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=45853.msg615529#msg615529

With the current Voting system and such, and all that padding, I can only see the top line in Domino's next post. I don't believe my resolution is overly small for a laptop either, being 1600x900.

Edit: I've noticed that once you click on these images above, it then makes the image full size in the post? Odd.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Hudders on Thu 26/04/2012 19:49:50
All of the empty space you circled is because of the width of your browser window. It wouldn't work to put the Moderator information where you suggest because it would get messed up for people with smaller resolutions.

EDIT: The tweet button at the top of the page, (does everyone see that? Or just people who have entered their twitter username?) looks really out of place, and the "share" link next to it doesn't do anything.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Ryan Timothy B on Thu 26/04/2012 19:58:29
Obviously. But even with my edits, it's still roughly 350 pixels to spare in width, not including the 30 pixels on each side of the forum (which would be even smaller for someone with a smaller resolution, since the forum width is 95%). Then once you start going into that, things like the board description ends up taking multiple rows.

I don't quite know why the moderator 'needs' to be part of the main page, but it is nice to see it there so it can direct PM's and such in the right direction if someone didn't see it at the top of the board itself.

Edit: But if you really wanted, you could also change the right column to this instead of splitting up the column into two:
Last post: Today at 09:34:11 am  by moonkid
in Re: Purgatorio, built fo...

Then you could actually increase the thread title more.

Oh no, Tweet and Facebook Share buttons, is there no escape?

Did we use to show post counts before? I thought we only showed post counts up to 10 posts or so, then hide them.

Edit: My avatar is now a spiffy 120x120, and I'm glad my Larry Vales smiley survived the move. It is my greatest accomplishment :=

To get the coloured post indicators again use this CSS, works for both the New post link for threads and direct links to a specific post:

a#new + div.windowbg,
a#new + div.windowbg span.topslice,
a#new + div.windowbg span.topslice span,
a#new + div.windowbg span.botslice,
a#new + div.windowbg span.botslice span {
background: lime !important;
}

a#new + div.windowbg2,
a#new + div.windowbg2 span.topslice,
a#new + div.windowbg2 span.topslice span,
a#new + div.windowbg2 span.botslice,
a#new + div.windowbg2 span.botslice span {
background: pink !important;
}

I'll leave the choice of colours to someone else.

Edit: Minor fix required due to insane markup. <span class="topslice"><span></span></span>? Good heavens.

Ryan - valid points (and thanks for the screenshots).  Yes, I'm a "padding" guy (nod)!!  We are discussing it in the "moderators" forum but I'd also love to hear other people's opinions on the padding.

I, too, suggested just removing the moderators line from the board index page.  That was one of the things that was on there when we upgraded to the new version and I just didn't pull it off.  (Also discussing in the mod forum!).

'fraid I'm with Ryan on this, it just feels empty for the sake of style rather than being functional. It's particularly noticeable on threads with short answers, which can leave you with 3.X 1 line posts to page once the giant avatars and member info are packed in. I've never understood the need for giant avatars, it's like the sig;- Once it gets larger than your average post, it's just a hassle.

Although, I suspect the new style looks awesome on tablet or phone, so it could be just the grumpy desktop\laptop monkeys.

I also vote for removing some of the vertical padding and clutter to give the site more content in the same browser size.
Two other suggestions concerning what could be (re)moved apart from padding:
- On the board index site, the column "post/topic count" is rather useless, as I understand it's to show off the activity of the forums to people who see the forums for the first time and wonder if it's a real forum or just one of these dead forums floating around in the web since creating forums has become so easy. The column could be used instead to show the moderators, this would free vertical space as suggested without taking horizontal space. Probably again like the avatar scaling not so easy to do without diving deep into the SMF code :/
- The moderator/administrator rank "stars" ((http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/Themes/AGS/images/staradmin.gif)(http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/Themes/AGS/images/staradmin.gif)(http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/Themes/AGS/images/staradmin.gif)(http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/Themes/AGS/images/staradmin.gif)(http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/Themes/AGS/images/staradmin.gif)) are pretty big with their 17x17 pixels per block, I think an unobstrusive 4x4 or 6x6 pixel block/dot/star would work better (and less than five of them would do, too). I'd also move them directly below (or better yet, behind) the user name, above the usergroup membership labels.

The Twitter and Facebook links have been much debated.  We'll see how many people actually use them before we decide.

I removed the 'Member' title from my test version, and I'll do that again here as some point.  Post counts are also a bit pointless - aside from moderator / admin status (and Mittens and the occasional custom title of course), I don't think anything else is really relevant.  If someone really cares what a user's post count is, they can check the user's profile.

Not sure whether this is mentioned yet, but it seems that upon browsing a member's profile page we can no longer see the member's login name but only the in-game nick (unless I missed something and had been looking at wrong places). If this is done on purpose and is privacy-related I'm fine with it, but the reason I want to know one's login name is because we can then identify members easier, as nicks could be changed any time. One use is in the Hall of Fame (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22522.0) thread, in which I used to reference members by their login names, for obvious reasons.

I am working on a new theme and when I created the theme it changed the "default" back to the original SMF theme (not sure why it did that).

I have switched it back to the AGS theme now so that issue should be sorted.

UPDATE!!

Okay... I have created the "compact" version of this layout:
This is a much more compacted version (hence the name).  I don't like it nearly as much but I think it will appease those that felt the default AGS theme had too much "dead" space.  For the most part it's identical to the default AGS theme, I just tucked in most of the padding.

Some of the changes/updates made include:

There's also another way to fit the forum layout to your own taste, as least if you're using Firefox:

-Find the file called userContent.css. For XP, it's in [Username]/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.xxxxxxx/chrome/
(If it's not there, create it in Notepad, don't save it as .txt though, switch to "all files" before saving)

Now paste this into the file:
tr.windowbg2 td {
padding: 0.2em 0.6em !important;
line-height: 95% !important;
}

Restart firefox and BAM! :-D

I see the colour highlighting css for directly linked posts were added. Unfortunately the markup for when a linked post is the first post of a page is different (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=45853.msg615898#msg615898), so those posts won't get highlighted. Fixed CSS below, using the sibling combinator selector:

a#new + div.windowbg span.topslice span,
a#new + div.windowbg span.botslice,

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile is your own profile.  You don't need the summary or u variables...  This should be what the profile link at the top of each page links to?

You cannot see your own profile without the account settings options.  It will look basically identical to how other people see it though, just with more options.

OK, sorry. What I mean is that if I click on "Profile", "Summary" or "Account Settings" I get exactly the same page.

Summary actually goes to http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile I don't know where "action=summary" came from in my previous post. In my defence I am quite tired...

Great work so far! The dusty old forums now look very tidy.

I noticed that there is very little (maybe zero?) spacing between characters on the board information box. It becomes fairly hard to read on higher resolutions:

Might just be me, Chrome on Mac.

Everything else is ace (nod) My avatar is now a little slower with twice the pixels!

Tabata means that the "Profile Info" and the "Actions" menus are missing from the normal user's profile, (on the left-hand side).

It's less obvious in the compact theme.

EDIT: I'm also getting a frame with "Database Error" at the bottom of other peoples profiles.

In your example and in Hudders version is something missing
but I tried it again make it more obvious: http://s14.directupload.net/images/user/120428/qnlzbh6l.png

What we mean is that there is no way for us to see our OWN profile as others would see it.  No matter where we click, we can only see the page that lets us edit our profile information, but not our actual profile page.    Both of your links quoted above go to my 'account settings' page even though one of them contains my user number.

There's a real issue with using the drop down menus on a mobile phone. Since half of them have a direct link when you click on the drop down title. The only way around it is by holding down on it for a bit until it drops down. But in the process I get the "Open link in a new window" etc etc pop up on my mobile browser. So yes, I can technically get to anything within a drop down, but only if I knew that these were more than just menu links - and if I was a person smart enough to hold down on it, then press away to have the browser actions disappear.

If you're wondering what phone I'm using, I'm embarrassed to admit it's a Windows Phone 7. But not for long, I have plans to buy an Android phone within the next couple weeks. ;)

As for this profile viewing issue, I have full access to everything in my profile and viewing it. I'm not limited like the screenshots I'm seeing.

Well I can see my own profile, but I have the Profile Info, that I was talking about/showing and that is needed for all normal users. It is missing in AGA's example version and Hudders don't have it, too.

You should check, if you are also missing it, then we know the reason.

Yes, mine is just like that. I do not have the sidebar like AGA's, it's all on the top like Tabata's with 3 drop down options for your profile.
    Profile Info
        -Summary
        -Show Stats
        -Show Posts..
    Modify Profile
        -Account Settings
        -Forum Profile
        -Look and Layout
        -Notifications
        -Personal Messaging
        -Buddies/Ignore List
    Actions
        -Delete this Account

This is probably a long shot, but those of you who are having problems, try pressing Ctrl+F5 to do a complete refresh of the page including the CSS stuff. I doubt this is the case, but who knows.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Darth Mandarb on Sat 28/04/2012 18:34:51
Something new (with SMF 2.0) is the option between the drop-down stuff or the side-panel stuff.  If you have the drop-downs (like Tabata) and want the side-panel stuff look all the way over to the right you should see two little arrows << ... click those and it will swap to the side-panel layout.  Not sure if this was unclear to anybody.  It's horribly designed and not very obvious what it is for.

This is a much more compacted version (hence the name).  I don't like it nearly as much but I think it will appease those that felt the default AGS theme had too much "dead" space.  For the most part it's identical to the default AGS theme, I just tucked in most of the padding.
Your efforts are appreciated Darth. Is there any way the compact theme could also effect the way the posts are displayed as well - i.e. min post size, since switching off avatars doesn't do a lot?

Just to confirm, I also only have the Modify button and options. I do not have the Profile Info and Actions sections that Tabata has.

All I have is:

Profile (in the Nav Bar)
Summary (Profile menu subitem)
Account Settings (Profile menu subitem)

All three of which take me to Account Settings

The last subitem I have is Forum Profile which takes me to the page to edit my profile. I cannot see my public profile. The options are the same regardless of which way I have the options toggled (sidebar or above)

I can confirm this too, no 3 sections on the nav bar, just one, and no way to see my own profile like others do or have a way to see my last posts and my stats.

Also, just to be sure, I tested it in Firefox, Chrome and IE, and with AGS, AGS compact and board default theme, it makes no difference.
Really strange how only Tabata seems to have more buttons.

@Tabata - these posts and PM that won't send.  Do they contain unusual characters, like the kind you might see in asian emoticons?
The reason I ask is I tried putting this [DELETED] as my bit of text underneath my avatar, but kept getting exactly the same Database Error you're talking of, but when I tried using normal alphanumeric text, it worked fine.  So I think one or some of those characters were causing the problem... In fact, I wonder if this message sends... I'll find out in a second.

[EDIT]  YES that's the problem.  This very post brought up the same error, so I've deleted the emoticon I was trying to use as an example (it was this one (https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FX18JVlEX8o/T53eihYVoPI/AAAAAAAAAPk/LZfA7azE3R0/s131/tableflipguy.png)).

The ignore list is the second register of your buddy list in “modify profile”.

Is the search function broken right now? Looks that way.
Also, the link to this thread in the forum header ("so please report any problems here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=45853.msg615530#new).") still leads to the first page, not the latest post. I know it's temporary and stuff, but I end up in the middle of the page and have to scroll to get to the link to the last page.

But not for long, I have plans to buy an Android phone within the next couple weeks. ;)

To come back to this a while later, unfortunately the first link currently always has to be clickable, and I can't work out how to make that not be true.

Does anyone else have any bug reports / feature requests to make now?  I've read back through this thread, and I think everything has been addressed now.

Sadly AGA didn't answer my question whether he understood what I was trying to explain about that earlier.
But those missing links are the reason for some of us normal users can't see their own summary Profile
(and it has nothing to do with the themes/design chosen).

Okay, okay â€" I know, that I am a very “special kind of” user  ;) , but I think my account settings are those of a normal user (mainly)
I showed pics “like hell” and you now know about some others who are missing the same sections
(Stupot and straydogstrut) and also about Ryan, who seems to have the sections/links like I do.

I really don't know how to tell it in other words/pics and it makes me mad not to be able to help â€" sorry guys.  :~(

The only positive about it:
The community won't loose members because you are not able to delete your account as long as you are missing the link/section for that

WYSIWYG is actually enabled by default, but it never seems to have worked for us.  I'll keep tinkering, but I can't guarantee it'll ever work.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Snarky on Tue 01/05/2012 12:25:08
I don't really care about a true wysiwyg editor, just buttons/drop-downs to insert the bb-code tags into the message. The ones I don't use a lot (font, size, color, alignment, for example) I always have to look up (the link to the reference page is also gone, BTW), and even lists would be a lot easier with buttons. Just have a look at the Adventure Gamers forums to see what I'm talking about.

Oh, that reminds me: they also support keyboard shortcuts, so that you can select a piece of your text and just press Ctrl-B or Ctrl-I to bold or italicize it. That would be also be very nice to have.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: AGA on Tue 01/05/2012 13:21:00
Yeah, that all comes under the WYSIWYG heading on SMF.  You can add or remove certain options, but if WYSIWYG ain't workin', none of it will.  I'm trying to get to the bottom of why it's broken though.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Snarky on Tue 01/05/2012 14:33:50
That's annoying, 'cause buttons to insert tags are trivial to whip up in javascript. If you can't get it to work, at least it wouldn't be a ton of work to reimplement ourselves.

So, is there anything you (admins) can do about some of us not being able to see their own profile ?
Whichever header I click on under the "profile" drop-down menu, I land on the "modify profile" tab, and that's the only one available. One of them is different, though, but that's not much of a consolation.

Syntax highlighting will definitely be different from 1.16, as I've installed this mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2925).  It obviously doesn't support AGS, but someone could probably make it do so if they were willing to take the time.

Code used to have a light grey background IIRC, and lines at the top and bottom. And the syntax highlighting was already fine; not exactly the same as in AGS though.
The German Maniac-Mansion-Mania forum has AGS highlighting, and they use SMF too (example post (http://www.maniac-mansion-mania.de/forum/index.php?topic=2085.msg43773#msg43773)).
Maybe we could borrow that part of their custom config? I pretty sure Endres (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=11048) built it, I'll ask him.

Okay... the code CSS should be fixed (very strange issue; I have no idea how it was removed).

As for the syntax formatting; somebody with more AGS coding experience than I will have to take a look at that (and which module to install/modify).

I'm happy to work with somebody on it though 8-)

Nitpicking.

I usually browse with javascript turned off.
This way, I can't check what's written inside "hide" tags.

Spoiler
This, for example, is unreadable without turning javascript on, as you can't select the hidden text.

Yes using iceweasel (with the help of noscript); no using w3m.
In general, I am a little bit wary of javascript only functionalities which can break the content for a "js not enabled" browser.

I want to stress that I am probably one of only two forumers having this problem (the other being dasjoe). No simple fix means I will live with it.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: AGA on Fri 04/05/2012 20:57:33
I have JS disabled by default in Firefox, using NoScript.  The only reason I used this one rather than doing it the way it used to be is that this way it's one click and the spoiler stays visible, whereas with the "highlight to see" method it used to use, that's not true.

The built-in script header is included in the source code at AGS.Editor\Resources\agsdefns.sh, so  you'll need that, along with the info from the Script Language Keywords page in the manual. This should be it:

Yeah, as I mentioned before, this is very annoying as I used to use people's log-in handles instead of their (changeable) nicks in the Hall of Fame entries. This is essential for tracking whether several competitions are won by the same person. :tongue:

Also, don't know whether this is mentioned already, the highlighting of the first unread post of a thread still does not work as what it used to be. When the first unread post is the first post of a page (happens when well, that post is indeed the first one on a new page, or the whole thread is new) it won't be highlighted atm. This is very confusing.

Next time you're playing around with the forum, could you change the area where you assign your avatar. Adding the size to the text that's currently there:

Specify your own avatar by URL (size: 120 x 120)

Somewhat related to the forum upgrade, albeit not a suggestion for the forum itself:
For those who want to see avatars in their original size if they're smaller than 120x120px (and have a browser capable of interpreting the max-width/max-height attribute), this seems to work fine in current versions of Firefox at least:
Search for the file userContent.css, and add the lines:

@-moz-document domain(adventuregamestudio.co.uk) {
li.avatar a img.avatar {width:auto !important; height:auto !important; max-height:120px; max-width:120px;}
div#basicinfo div div img.avatar {width:auto !important; height:auto !important;}
}

The second line overrides the mandatory scaling and replaces it with a maximum size (aspect ratio is kept automatically), the third line lets you display avatars in their original size on the profile pages if you wish that (e.g., Dualnames' Bladerunner scene shows up there in all its 500px wide glory). The first line ensures that these options only affect the AGS site.
While you're at it, if you haven't done it yet, you might also want to add the line
img.bbc_img[src$=".png"], img.bbc_img[src$=".gif"], img.bbc_img[src$=".PNG"], img.bbc_img[src$=".GIF"] {image-rendering: -moz-crisp-edges;}
to remove the blurriness from upscaled screenshots or pixel-art in the Critics Lounge.

Edit: Oh, this second bit might as well work as a suggestion for the forums. Here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=41150.0) it was suggested a while ago to make a new [pixelart][/pixelart] bbcode to post images that don't get blurry, since the above CSS is only a heuristic substitution that may affect also some photos where smooth interpolation is desired. Now is a good time to bring that up again. Is it doable? :)
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Hudders on Thu 10/05/2012 22:31:17
If it is do-able, making it so that a [pixelart] object is presented twice: once at original size and again at 4x, would be perfect.  :-D
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Snarky on Fri 11/05/2012 17:30:10
Eh, 4x isn't always the right size for the upscaled version.  :-\

I think a better idea would be to make the pixelart images dynamically rescalable, with little buttons for 1X, 2X, 3X, 4X..  (nod)

Hey, I see we have wysiwyg formatting buttons now! Excellent! Cheers, AGA!  :-*

Currently, there seems to be a glitch in resizing images through the IMG tag. It's returning an error message:  "IMAGE BLOCKED - http://www.bloodlustsoftware.com/kc1.png"

The board code has the following in it:  img width=640 height=480

I'm pretty sure the issue is new this weekend, because I recall seeing the screens working a day or two ago. I verified that other GIP threads using resizing were having the same problem. If it's intentional, I'm happy to take the resize off.

If I were to bet, I'd say they are working on blocking BMP images from loading and somehow it's affecting yours.

It's probably them working on the pixel image enlarging.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Khris on Sun 13/05/2012 10:43:52
I guess that images are blocked based on the size of the original image.
The two images in my signature are 50px high but apparently, that's too big for signatures.

Okay, so this is now installed.  The tag is [ code=ags ] (or choose ags from the BBCode 'Code' selector at the top of the post area).  Seems to be working fine.

However, this unfortunately removes the plain old [ code ] tag, which means that I'll have to at some point go through the database converting all the plain code tags to [ code=ags ]es.

Why does it remove the [code] tag? Wouldn't it be better to make the new style use that extension instead of making a new one that has more characters to type in? Confused.

Cool, would it be possible to customize the factors? I was thinking x3 instead of x8.

The ags highlighting is almost perfect, it looks like "void" was omitted from the keywords list though.

Also, all Firefox/Chrome users, here's the fixed userContent.css (thanks to TomatoesInTheHead):
Code (css) Select
@-moz-document domain(adventuregamestudio.co.uk) {
li.avatar a img.avatar {
width:auto !important;
height:auto !important;
max-height:120px;
max-width:120px;
}
div.post img[src$=".png"], div.post img[src$=".gif"], div.post img[src$=".PNG"], div.post img[src$=".GIF"] {
image-rendering: -moz-crisp-edges;
}
}

(No squashed/stretched avatars, nearest-neighbor scaling of images in posts.)

Is it possible to add this to the forum stylesheet (or even only to [imgzoom] images) so that people don't have to go in and hack their FF settings to view the forum properly? As long as most readers won't see the upscaled versions sharp, I feel like I'll still have to provide manually upscaled versions.

Bear in mind that this will only affect the browsers that support this Mozilla standard, rather than all.

I've done it now, but I'm not sure I agree with only showing avatars at their 'natural' size, as this makes it look a little weird as the avatar sizes change as you go through a thread.  I've left the auto sizing bit out for now.

I really like all the other forum enhancements (embedded videos, woohoo!), but I love this one! It's perfect! (The only thing that might make it better would be a way to set the default zoom level on [imgzoom] tags.) In Safari it still looks slightly blurry (but not as much as it used to in Firefox), and on my Android phone it looks blurry both in the default browser and Opera Mini. (You can't actually hover to resize in these, but when you pinch-zoom the page itself it still does some sort of bilinear or bicubic interpolation.) Nevertheless, it's great!

Oh, and would it be possible to enable keyboard shortcuts for at least the basic formatting tags (bold, italics, ...)?
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: AGA on Mon 14/05/2012 17:02:22
I've taken a look at the zoom code, and I can't find an obvious way you making it zoom by default.  However, JavaScript is really not a strength of mine, so if someone else wants to take a look (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=930), go ahead.

I'll take a look at the keyboard shortcuts later.

I have no idea what you mean. 'All' didn't used to show, and it only shows now when there are fewer than 250 posts in a thread (five pages).  What do you mean by "the number before all is one page behind the last"?  The posts per page has changed to 50 now, while it used to be 20 by default, maybe that's confusing you.

Regarding the AGS code color for number values, I haven't checked the exact RGB values, but CSS "maroon" is closer to what's actually in AGS than the current value.

Also, I've noticed a couple of other issues with the syntax highlighting:

- If something is immediately preceded by a period, it should not be highlighted (numbers are an exception of course). Specifically this wrong for the Character.Room property, where 'Room' shouldn't be colored.
- The syntax highlighting isn't case sensitive. Seeing as AGS is, it would be useful if the highlighting were too.
- It's already been noted, but if a macro or preprocessor directive is followed by a comment "//" or "/*" then the rest of that line should be green.

If any/all of these aren't very easy to fix, it's a minor quirk. ;)

I've noticed there seems to be a glitch with the code coloring. This post (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=46070.msg618499#msg618499) has the code commenting after the apostrophe. I tried to do it in here but it doesn't seem to show the issue.

I believe it's using the C# style commenting. Unless this is some kind of one time glitch. Not sure.

Edit: I'm an idiot and didn't notice it was registering all the lines below that accidental quote issue as strings. So it is doing what it's supposed to. Just gets all weirded out once it hits the apostrophe.

Yeah it's there, you have to be in the Messages section.

Speaking of the PM outbox, not that I'm saying you should work needlessly at this, I've never understood why your sent messages aren't always auto stored unless you specifically delete them. Just like any email service. Instead of manually needing to check the store message in Sent messages check box.

I've also hated how the search was, with the check box, is defaulted to everything, and the sub-forum list is always hidden. Then after you expand the section, if you hadn't clicked the search all check box, it's now located at the bottom. It's only 2 extra clicks, but still annoying.

As for the arrow pointing in which direction is expanded or not, I agree it does look confusing and backwards. Overall I'd prefer to see a plus and minus.

AGS Forums » Profile of $user » Personal Messaging (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;area=pmprefs).  "Save a copy of each personal message in my Sent Items by default."

I've also just reset everyone to have it enabled.

There, enhanced post box, with shortcuts and all.

It's great, but the shortcuts aren't working for me (in Firefox on two separate computers). I'm not sure if they did before, I seem to remember that they did, but they're broken now.

Also the forums have been slow the last couple of days, and I did get a timeout one of the last posts I made.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade

They work fine for me in Firefox 12, on both the AGS theme and AGS compact.  I've also just tested in Opera, Safari, IE 9 (x86 and x64) and SeaMonkey.  So I dunno why it's not working for you...

As for the slow forums, I'll look into it.

What are the shortcuts? Ctrl+B for bold, etc? When I try any of the obvious shortcuts like that I get the bookmarks window opening and such. Firefox 12.

Edit: There's a post by someone claiming the forums don't work in Chrome but didn't explain the issues.

Yeah, same basic stuff as any WYSIWYG text editor.

Sorry guys, don't know what to tell you; since it works for some people it's presumably a user side problem, not server side.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Eric on Sat 26/05/2012 01:50:55
I only get WYSIWYG options if I set my theme to AGS Compact, and not AGS. Maybe this is the issue some are having?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see above where you say it should work for both. Still, curious.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade
Post by: Snarky on Sat 26/05/2012 13:20:38
I mean, I've tested it on two different computers (Mac and Win7), seven different browsers (Safari, FF 12.0 Mac, FF 12.0 Win, IE 9 64-bit, Tor Browser/FF 3.6.13, Opera 11.64, Chrome 19.0), and it does not work on any of them. My Firefoxes have a bunch of add-ons that could potentially interfere, but all the other browsers should be clean.

For vBulletin forums I tested, e.g. The Digital Fix (http://forums.thedigitalfix.co.uk/forums/) (the old adventuregamers forums (http://archive.adventuregamers.com/forums/) having been locked), the shortcuts work in most of the browsers listed above (though not Chrome). It's not working on any SMF or phpBB forums I tested, though I'm unclear on whether any of them in fact support it.

Post by: Stupot on Sat 26/05/2012 17:32:32
The WYSIWYG options only appear if you turn on 'Quick Reply' first.

Under Look and Layout you have to have Show 'Quick Reply' on topic display set as 'Show' (on or off by default doesn't matter).
You don't have to actually be using the 'Quick Reply' to use the WYSIWIG functions, they appear on the normal 'Reply' page, but you have to have turned on the 'Quick Reply' option for this to happen.

That's at least how things are working for me (Chrome w/ Windows Vista).

EDIT:
Probably unrelated, but despite my having posted this at 17:32, the main forum page still thinks that Snarky's post at 13:20 was the last post in tis thread...  I wonder if anyone else can even see this post...

Only a small thing: The icons "Insert Table Row" and "Insert Table Column" look switched to me. Also, the [glow] and [shadow] buttons should probably give codes that work, using gray or something, like [glow=gray,2][/glow] and [shadow=gray,bottom][/shadow]

And a bigger thing: Thanks AGA for doing all this work on the forums!

My only gripe at the moment is that the quote symbol overlaps the change color selector. if you try to select the color RED, it overlaps.

There we go.  You have to specify a video size (which it now does by default - didn't used to).  Bear in mind you also need to put the embed info provided by YouTube / other site (<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZLr2DN2KHdc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> type link) rather than just the page URL.

Anything with a single digit number.

Test 1

Shiny 2

Stuff like that.

Unfortunately there is a minimum of two characters per word for searches; searching for 'a' for instance would return billions of results.  If you want to search for test 1, you need to type "test 1", and it will search for the exact phrase (rather than any post that happens to contain the two words in any position) and work fine.

Surely the FAQ (http://www.tapatalk.com/faq.php) would have been a better link to provide, though that is just one additional click away.

QuoteQ: What's the point of this app if my members can access my site with mobile skin at no cost?

A: Most users are content with the mobile skin or a standard web browser but some of them would appreciate a full-on native app forum experience on their phone. For example Tapatalk app allows user to upload photo directly from their phone to your forum as an image attachment. All these will drive more engagement to your forum at no cost to you.

I've never used Tapatalk, but from what I've read and what I understand, it's just an integrated forum browser that users can access their favorite forums with instead of having to use the mobile (or full web) version. I honestly don't see what the real benefit would be, beyond just a matter of user preference.

Edit: Also, what was the point in breaking the forum rules just to quote the entire post immediately before yours?

Not sure where to put this. I think it would make more sense to have the "I've worked on the following games" above the google map, seeing as people are more likely to look at a profile for their games. Plus it is sort of annoying scrolling down. Would a switcheroo be possible and am I the only one who thinks this?

Ryan, I don't understand what you're even saying.

I think what you're saying is that if you highlight some text that you've already typed and then click the WYSIWYG button that the tags are being applied to the entire post instead of only the highlighted bit? Coz if that's what you're saying then 1) it wasn't clear at all from your "example" you just posted and 2) it's not working that way for me on Google Chrome.

(Formatting tags were added by the WYSIWYG buttons after the post was typed out...)

Edit: I think I was actually able to replicate what you're saying. IFF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_and_only_if) the selected text spans multiple lines then the WYSIWYG buttons are wrapping each line in separate tags instead of wrapping the entire block in one set of tags. Is this what you meant?

I guess I could've said "applies it to all the selected lines". Also my last post made it more confusing by not explaining that I actually pressed the code and bold buttons while those two lines were highlighted altogether.

Yes. That's what I meant.

Edit: The main reason I find it a terrible feature of the SMF WYSIWYG because I often select multiple lines after I've typed something and press the button. Mostly with quote or code tags. I could've sworn when these were first added they didn't have this issue. Let me check if the quick reply is the reason for this.

Edit: Yup. That's what I thought. I knew it used to work the way it should before AGA swapped the default to quick reply.
(http://www.bryvis.com/entertainment/other/agsf/wysiwyg.png)
Funny thing is the quick reply has some better features, but the non quick reply still has the old Code tags. Both the drop down and the code button output the code tags.

I still want to see how the code highlighting was implemented and why it was easy to get the  [code=ags]  to work but not the single  [code]. (not that I'm insulting you or anything)

It was implemented the way cb|GeSHi-mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3070) works by default.  The reason it was easy to add the AGS tag is that it's designed to let you drop in additional languages (plus some friend of... Khris? did the GeSHi script for AGS, not me!) easily, but in order to make [code] tags work I'd have to completely rewrite the parsing code.  SMF coding is surprisingly complex, since every script seems to include a billion other scripts.  It you want to take a look yourself, it's the code tag stuff in Subs.php that needs to change.

As for the Googling it for you mod, I'll take a look later.

Now [code=] works, but not [code].  The parser expects the code tag to have a parameter, rather than being empty.

Oh, I did have another look and there are two code tags defined in Subs.php. One is for code (type=unparsed_content) and one for code= (type=unparsed_equals_content).

So the "code=" version has to be copied over to "code". I don't know if it will work though if it expects parameters.

Hey guys, the past week or so it seems like email alerts have stopped coming for threads I was previously receiving them. Any tips? It is an AOL address but I checked SPAM and nothing....

I have an AOL address, too and my notifications work, so it seems to be something else.

Oh just got that one! I went in and changed my email address and then BACK to AOL...maybe that fixed it....

It's not a big prob for me, but I thought I'll mention it here, because for all serious developer it's not that nice
and for normal users/guests who watch the profiles (coming from the database) it is very irritating.

The lines about what work you did on the named games are not correct.
What you (really) did is to be seen one line upwards (and for the last one you did nothing)

example to make it more clear:
(http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/3268/linesy.png)

EDIT
Watching the same profiles by using an other laptop (in same settings) â€" everything is okay.  :shocked:
I don't know, what it is, but my laptop is going to die shortly anyway.  :cry:

I am confused now, but that's my “normal status” most of the time.  :undecided:
So if noone else has this â€" please forget about my post.
SORRY!  :kiss:

Two very small issues:
If you hover over the email icons beneath the avatar, the tooltip still says "Array[email address]".

The signature in the profile has the same max height as the one beneath each post, but it also says "Signature:" at the top and thus more is cut off (which is inconvenient for preview purposes while editing it).

Somehow there Mittens titles are mixed up, as in this thread for example http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=46238.0 (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=46238.0) but only in later posts, not at the beginning.

Could you make the board search options expand when you uncheck the Check all box? It doesn't make any sense to have it uncheck and have it stay collapsed (searching through zero boards).

Hi

I don't know if its been mentioned but the Top Forum link goes to home page, should it not go to forums?

Sorry, what does "Top Forum link" mean?  I can't see any incorrect links on the forums...

Something is going wrong with user titles, but it doesn't happen in all threads. Look here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=46040.msg628828#msg628828 for an example. There are additional titles compared to this post that don't belong there.

Yeah, I've known about it for months.  Started happening when the new "AGS Project Admins" title was added.  I've tried to fix it, but can't find the time / inclination to properly track down what's causing it.

Email alerts have stopped coming for PMs now, as well.  I noticed this yesterday.   :sad:

That has been the case since we moved to the new server a few weeks.  Waiting for CJ to come and sort out the SMTP server.

I just noticed, is this ok that locked threads are positioned not in the order of the last post's date, but beyond all the non-locked threads?

Only in Competitions & Activities, and it's been like that for a long time, deliberately.  It's to make it clear which competitions are still ongoing, and which are closed.

BTW, before the upgrade, there are texts mentioning something like "This activity has ended, bla bla bla..." (I forget the exact wordings) when you locked a thread in the Activities & Competitions forum, but they are gone now. Is it possible to restore that?

Hope you don't mind me asking for this, but can you give some news about the current state of affairs?
... in other words:
Do you think we have a little chance getting the notifications to run again these days?

I know you all are very busy and I don't want to jostle - but waiting would be much easier
if we knew a bit about when CJ might have the time to look into this ...

After voting for a game on the games page, I get redirected a page with the old layout (the one that lists the games). Actually, the voting page itself is in the old layout.

Most of the addition or update pages on the games page use the old layout, because CJ couldn't be bothered to update them.  The games page is several thousand lines of code long, so I don't blame him.  It'll be changed eventually!
