Ponch is in trouble now

I seem to be neglecting everyone's favorite cow, but started working on this, another AGS notable:

Supposed to be yawning. If I could pixel 1/100th as well as Miez, I wouldn't be messing around with 3D.

I'm going to risk bumping this thread, although I'm honestly running out of things to do to with Ponch's avatar. I'd watch a couple of Pink Panther movies this afternoon, and since working on Tabata's avatar had already made me think about turning her into a panther... Well...

I believe the glass texture in Anim8or is a fairly recent addition. It does seem to work, but I need to play with it some more. I used it for Cowseau's magnifying glass. Now, off to find the minkey...

T Think those 3d pictures will be good to use in games.

Someday, hopefully. I'm not always able to get them to do what I want them to do. They're a finicky group.

Aaaaeeeyyy! Something new for The Fonz, er, The Ponch:

I'm troubled by the question and risk Snarky's wrath for another post to make additional comments. That, and a chance to poke more fun at Ponch's avatar.

There are a number of 3D plugins for AGS, some of which I've played around with. Regarding 3D elements, once converted to images, they will insert in games. For example:

I took my model -- well, it's actually a knock off of Problem's model -- and rendered a small image, which I then put, unretouched, into a default AGS game. Allowing for the gray cow in front of a gray wall, you be the judge of whether or not the cow would work in the scene. The background and bum character are RON 2D assets.

This response should also enlighten Ponch as to what happens when one refuses to take off ones tuxedo.

Ponch

ayyyyy.

yep, still my favorite thread on the internet

Ponch's response gives me a green light for more stuff. Thepeacefulman's post got me thinking about shadows as something that gets lost using 3D models in 2D games. Thought about it and came up with this:

I put down a magenta cube, dinked with some of the settings, played with the light quite a bit. It looks "okay" in a default AGS game:

[imgzoom]http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/o756/jwalt10705/shadowPonch1_zps162fc0d8.png[/imgzoom]

Obviously, the shadows won't bend around objects, and similar shadows are possible in 2D. It may not be worth the effort, and Anim8or's ray tracr, with shadows enabled, tends to darken everything down. Nor is magenta the best transparent color, but that's what I used here.

Cassiebsg

Maybe you could just use a light shadow (instead of a all black one) under Ponch, instead of casting it behind?
There are those who believe that life here began out there...

Problem

Well, if you use a 2d engine like AGS it usually doesn't make sense to render realistic shadows for the characters. They'd have to be calculated in realtime to match the lightsources and the geometry of each room, otherwise they'll look wrong.
So if you want 3d characters with realistic shadows, you have to use a 3D or 2.5D engine. In 2D you can only have fake shadows, such as a simple circular shadow beneath the character, or maybe a rendered shadow with the light coming directly from above, so the shadow doesn't spread across the background.

@ Cassiebsg and Problem - I was just playing with the shadows. I've only recently began experimenting with the lighting in Anim8or's Scene editor, and this fit in nicely with that. I had nothing major in mind, just a passing thought.

@ Problem - Your model continues to stand me in good stead.  ;)  The Anim8or Forum is very active, lately. The creator of the program retired from his full time job and is pushing out updates on a regular basis. There also seems to be around three forum regulars who are cranking out Anim8or scripts to add features. They keep talking about keyboard shortcuts to implement this or that new feature. It has me worried. It's sounding an awful lot like Blender.  (roll)

Honestly it's hard for me to tell what genre the game is.  judging by the sprite of that cow.

I'm following this thread all the time, why do I see this just now? Funny image  ;-D

I had more in mind with this one, but I got frustrated: don't like the car, don't like the way the sofa "unfolds," and the clothing is doing weird things to me for unknown reasons. Still thought I'd share it.

It is Biblical in its proportions:

Anim8or models/render.

Can you also do a Tabata mouse saying, "Got any cheese?" to complete the pair?

Ponch

Good to see my favorite thread continues to live on!

Tabata

(laugh) … but as we can see there's no cheese for cows that make us go blind by using an extremely blinking signature

  Nice one jwalt!

jwalt

Disney wouldn't like it, but what the heck...

CaptainD

So is that the title of the game you're going to make with all these?  Steamboat Ponchy?
