The BBC has had Sumo Digital (The people who gave us Broken Sword: Sleeping Dragon) to create a Doctor Who adventure game.  It wasn't supposed to be available until Saturday, but it looks like its available now and its for FREE!!!!

Of course, I said, looks like.  Apparently those of us not living in the UK will need to wait a month and then pay for it?!

Anyhow, posting this here, because I assume that the NEW GAME ACCOUNCEMENTS is reserved for AGS games and not general free stuff.

I have been playing this a bit and am enjoying it a fair amount.  Although I am not a huge fan of the new Doctor Who, I suppose it is a nice new medium for the genre.  It is quite well produced and the puzzles are interesting enough.  Found a couple of bugs though :P  Now someone needs to make one in AGS....

I guess you could always try using this site http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/  and at the bottom where it says enter url http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/theadventuregames

it worked for me i live in the U.S.A

I'm au fait enough with making the computer think I'm in the UK (I'm a licence-fee payer, damn it) but the downside is that the only computer I've taken with me on my year-long job overseas is nowhere near capable of running this - I'm stuck without Doctor Who until April 2011!

Ah well. At least my parents posted in Saudi Arabia can play it.

That dude is seriously messed up looking without eyebrows.  He's easily the creepiest looking doctor ever, and vaguely cromagnonish.

I got bored on the THIRD stealth bit and gave up. The character models are sub Fifa 2004 as well...

That's what happens when you mix action gameplay with a pacifist protagonist:  very little.  Charles Cecil seriously should know better, for one thing.  They could have easily structured the game in a more traditional adventure style without the stealth garbage.  Even the kids they were apparently pandering to complained that it was too frustrating having to avoid daleks constantly if you watch their little bbc promo.  Instead of so much stealth avoidance they should have had environmental hazards you could use to your advantage with the help of various gadgets that would disable the daleks or open up paths around them entirely....Or they could've just made it an actual adventure game instead of some kind of bizarre stealth avoidance thing.

Was it duckbutcher who had that demo of Dr. Who done in traditional adventure game format?  They should've hired him, his game was way ahead of city of the daleks in terms of fun and actual dr. who feel.

Tried to watch the trailer and it really wasn't my thing.

Doctor Who? More like Doctor What the Fuck. When did this become a kids TV show? How hard is it to get a Dr Who game right? Why has the doctor developed into a gay icon?

Edit: definitely don't have a problem with gays, post is unnecessarily angry.

markbilly

Oh yeah and the voice acting is god-awful. Gave the impression Smith and Gillan couldn't be arsed with a 'silly video game' or something.

I'm not a great doctor who fan, but from the few episodes I've seen, this looks like Doctor WTF.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

When did Doctor Who become a kids' show? When it started. It always has been a kids' show. That's why they made Torchwood, which was similar but aimed at an adult audience.

I'm not sure how you see the Doctor as a gay icon, but Doctor Who has always had a large gay fanbase, and of course Russell T Davies, who wrote a lot of the episodes of the past few years, is gay, so who knows?

Anyway I want to like this game, but my beef with it is, aside from the fact that my PC goes into overdrive while the game's running (I haven't got the greatest graphics card), is that I'm stuck at the start :( How do you

I managed to get this game working, and I have to say... I kinda liked it.  It did everything wrong; the "puzzles" consisted of avoiding Daleks while looking for an object or solving a minigame.  But for some reason I still got a kick out of it.  Probably because the gameplay was simple enough that it didn't get in the way of the story, which was fun in that cheesy Who way.  I wouldn't have wanted to play a full 10 hour game with this mechanic, but for a little snack game it was fine.  Not great, certainly, but enjoyable enough if you're a big fan of Who (which I am).  And CGI Amy in a miniskirt didn't hurt either.  I'm looking forward to the next one.

What did you have to do to get it to work?
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

Let's give this terrifying looking thing a go then...

What the... I swear The Doctor in this thing's going to give kids more nightmares than the Daleks...

Frodo

Far too many 'avoid the daleks' bits.  It becomes tedious and boring.

And the controls are overly-sensitive.  Move the mouse a tiny bit to turn round just a little, and you end up turning round far too much.  So you have to make him turn back.

Why has the doctor developed into a gay icon?

Because he's a character who's male, and on TV. What have you got against gay icons, anyway?

Sslaxx

It's not bad for what it is. Not really sure I'd call it an adventure game though, really. But it's an amusing little diversion. Hopefully, if they make more of these, they'll take on board what works and what doesn't.

Not a lot of the "game" part worked, to be honest. Neither did the character models. I doubt they will change it all.
