I've seen many "I like [game], recommend something similar" threads, and thought, "Why not take it a bit further?"

I believe that to be untrue. I believe adventure games are a work of art, and therefore can be related to other forms of art.
So, if you liked Beneath a Steel Sky, then you may like one of the following books by Larry Niven:
-Protector
-The Long ARM of Gil Hamilton

Zapper, what do you believe to be untrue? I dini't find any menyion of anyone thinking games could not be art.

BTW, "I believe adventure games are a work of art" is very broad. Do you believe "Guernica" is art, or that Picasso is art, or anything painted or drawn is art? Adventure games, and more, certainly have the potential to be art, but don't be so defensive that you put them all under "art".

I think anyone who likes Robert Rankin novels would enjoy anything by Terry Pratchett, and vice versa.

Anyone who likes anime will like Fullmetal Alchemist and Eyeshield 21.

If you liked Space Quest, you'd enjoy Futurama. If you like Futurama, you may also enjoy Red Dwarf (a TV series...and novels).

People who like Red Dwarf would probably enjoy The Young Ones, The Brittas Empire, and any books by Terry Pratchett (refer to start of the post)

Actually this system works quite well on HOTU and I think it'd be a nice addition to the AGS games database (e.g. people can submit "if you like <this game> play <that game>" and the database lists only the top-three with 5+ people submitting it, to prevent nonsense links)

Pan's Labyrinth was a movie torn between two worlds, underutilizing the premises of both, sadly. Not a bad film, but not very good either.

If you like any of Yahtzee's horror games (specifically 5DAS, 6DAS, and 7DAS), you might enjoy The Shining. Even though I'm pretty sure most people have seen it by now, it's great. Also, look for the TV miniseries, which is actually pretty good!

If you liked Day of The Tentacle, you may like Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and the sequel, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul. I seriously believe them to be the two funniest and awesome books I've ever read, other than The Hitch-hiker's Guide to The Galaxy.
