Igor - You are most welcome!

Quote from: rodekill on Tue 27/01/2004 17:43:34Well, not Halle Berry or any of those useless fools who don't deserve the praise they get.
I was very disappointed with the 2001 Oscars.  I personally, can't stand Halle Berry.   I don't know that her performance in Monster's Ball warranted the Oscar but it was just as good a performance as any others in that category with her that year (maybe Judi Dench should have won?)

Denzel should have won ... but not for Training Day.  He should have been nominated for his performance in John Q the next year.  This was, in my view, a much more moving and powerful performance.  Russel Crowe should have snagged his second Oscar for his portrayal of John Nash.

I was disappointed with last year's (2002) Oscars as well.  It was too political and didn't feel like the Oscars to me.  Hopefully this year certain idiots won't get on stage and abuse their constitutional rights!  (NOT intended to start a war ... just expressing my disappointment!!)

Ah well ... this years Oscars are shaping up to be interesting!  Here's hoping ;)

Too true.

It's a hard situation for me 'cause I tend to agree with his message ... the guy just rubs me the wrong way.

Anyhoo ... he's not up for an award this year and there's no 'new' war going on (at least not yet).  So hopefully this year the show will actually be about the awards!

Don't be silly -- it's never about the awards.

It's about what Nicole Kidman is wearing.

Even if she isn't nominated, it's always about what she's wearing.

Always.

So, it wouldn't really matter who won then?

Well ... not to me.  I'm sure others still cared and maybe even thought she deserved it.  I just really don't like Halle Berry, so my opinion may have been skewed a wee bit.  Even though I don't like her, I still tried to give her a fair chance.

Felipe

HA! I TOLD YA! ;D
Man, I couldn't believe when I saw on TV that Cidade de Deus (City of God) had been nominated... we got disappointed when it didn't get nominated last year, cos, AFAICR, it was made in 2002.
I even mentioned this movie as oscar-deseving (look through my last 100 posts and you'll see), you know, it's really good when we get nominated in an america-centred ceremony; I mean, we were nominated for 4 categories (Barcik forgot to mention Best Foreign Film - or whatever you call it - ).
Wish us good luck!
Don't blame me - I didn't know it!   (I have the feeling this will come handy...)

Aye, City of God's noms was a big surprise, but (ironically) these kind of surprises have been happening lately.

Look at last year.

Both Hable con ella (Talk to Her) and  Y tu mamá también (And Your Mother Too) were slighted for Best Foreign film by Spain (I forgot which film the ychose), yet both films scored Best Original Screenplay nominations.

Also, Talk to Her not only won Best Original Screenplay, but was also nominated for Best Director.

Indeed, many surprises lately.
But, IMHO, this is really good. Shows us how "the Academy" is 'grown up', opening space for other countries show what they can do. Not only that, but "foreign cinema" is growing too, producing quality films and making its way into the medium.
Let's hope it'll continue like that. ;)

Well, I've looked through it all, and I have discovered the biggest award-related travesty since my two-sentence essay didn't win the She Inspires Me writing contest.

Kill Bill didn't win all of the music awards.

It didn't even win any of them.

Hell, it wasn't even nominated.

HOW?!? HOW, I ASK YOU, IN A SOCIETY LIKE OURS, WITH A RACE THAT CLAIMS TO BE THE HIGHEST FORM OF LIFE ON THE PLANET, COULD FINDING NEMO'S MUSIC BE NOMINATED OVER ONE OF THE BEST GODDAMN SONGS I'VE EVER HEARD?!? I MEAN, HAS ANYBODY HEARD THE KILL BILL THEME SONG? ANYBODY? HOW COULD ANYBODY POSSIBLY NOT LIKE THAT SONG? YOU SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES

Barcik

Duck, if I am not mistaking, the award is given for original score, and Kill Bill's, despite being bloody superb, wasn't. However, it is very puzzling that the Academy chose to ignore Kill Bill in all techical categories. I mean, it sure deserves Film and Sound editing nominations, at the very least.

Duck: Barcik's right about Kill Bill and the music nominations.  To be nominated, a film must have an original score (which Kill Bill doesn't; it was kind of a semi-original soundtrack I guess) or it must have an original song written for it (which Kill Bill doesn't; the so-called "theme song" is by Hotei Tomoyasu and was not written for the film).

EDIT: also, you're comparing Kill Bill's theme song to Finding Nemo's original score.  Even if Kill Bill's theme was an original composition for the film, it wouldn't even belong in the same Oscar category as Finding Nemo's score, it would go in Best Song.

Like remixor pointed out, it wasn't written for Kill Bill. In fact, it's not even original. It's an update of a song from Kinji Fukasaku's (the Battle Royale directory) Battles Without Honour and Humanity movies. A song most Japanese know by heart to paraphrase this movie review: http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/anothbat.shtml

Tonight is Oscar night, whee! It's really nice to see the Oscars with relatively few "locked" categories!

OSCARS TONIGHT!!!  WOO-HOO!!!

This is the one night of the year I actually anticipate more than any others!  I love Oscar's night.

I just hope this year isn't too political but hey, not knowing what to expect is part of the fun!

Predictions?  Hopes?

I wanna see Depp win.  He is the one actor I've always loved that the Oscars always snub.  The uptight committee doesn't like hollywood's bad-boy I guess!

And, of course, I want to see LotR:RotK win best picture.

Those are the two I care most about.

Oh and MrColossal ... when is your berf-day?  I'll send you some mp3 uh'muh boy fiddy cent!

"We goan party like it's yuh berf-day"

Man fiddy cent is soooooo cool.  Did you know he's been shot 9 times!!!  How admirable!!  His poetry is so meaningful.

And Sean Combs performance in Monster's Ball was actually really good, for such a small role.  I re-watched Monster's Ball the other night and I must say that Halle Berry, though I still can't stand her, was really good in the movie.  FAR better than anything else she's done ... except for maybe The Last Boyscout.

We (Brazillians) never had so many chances to win an Oscar... of course I won't miss the Awards tonight!

And I made a mistake: City of God isn't a nominee for Foreign Language Film.
At first, Academy didn't take it seriously when it stared in the USA for the first time. The critics didn't understand the film, didn't like it and didn't select it as a Nominee for 2003's Foreign Language Film Award.
However, during 2003 Miramax (responsable for the film distribution in the US) made  a marketing campaingn distributing it in a larger scale so that it could be nominated for 2004's Awards.
Of course, we didn't expect THAT outcome, receiving 4 (four ;D ) nominations, all in important (at least for us) categories: Directing (for Fernando Meirelles), Cinematography, Film Editing and Writing (Adapted Screenplay).
Of course, our chances of winning are small (although I'd bet in Cinematography and Film Editing), but just the fact of it being nominated in these categories is a great step fou our National Cinema Industry.

Matt Mueller, editor of the "Film Review" magazine, thinks that "City of God" could win the Awards for Editing and Writing, but says it's not too probable.

"The recognition of the Academy shows that Brazillian Cinema can't be restricted to the Foreign Language Film Award. The nomination of Best Director is a proof of how Brazil and Latin America can have international success, as Walter Salles has proved before", says the editor of the "Film Review" magazine.

City of God even features in the imdb Top 250 - Where it started as #223 and is #43, already! ;D

And there's more!
We have one more nomination: for Best Short Film (Animated) with "Gone Nutty" made by a Brazillian animator.

This 76º Academy Awards is something I can't lose!
Wish us good luck! :)

CONGRATULATIONS LORD OF THE RINGS!  It has tied Titanic and Ben Hurr for most Oscars (11).

I'll just say, it was well deserved, and about time.

Peter Jackson finally got his best director Oscar!

All in all it was an enjoyable show.

Billy Crystal owns the hosting slot.  It was great to have him back.

Seeing Michael Moore crushed by an Olyphant (sp?) was awesome (and I actually applaud him for being willing to do that).

I wanted Johnny Depp to win, but Sean Penn deserved it just as much!

I've said my peace, dm out.

Yep, it wasn't this time.
But then, we lost most of our nominations for TlotR, and that's ok, right? ;D

But as I said, just being nominated for all these was a big step ahead for us. Let's see what we'll make during 2004. ;)
