you don't need to write a script.

you need to write an outline, then a treatment.

[A treatment is a description of the action and aesthetics, without specific dialogue.]

after all this, you should write a script.

But any old word processor is fine - final draft just makes it easier. Guidelines for formatting a screenplay can be found here:

As well as a plug-in (I think) that makes aids writing screenplays in Microsoft Word.

I know a decent program. It's called 'Microsoft Word'. What you do is  make macros for the different dialogue and action sections.

Gah...I've been trying to figure out how to write screenplays for ages now. Every time I think I have the format sussed there's something that comes up that I can't express properly or I find I've been missing out an important element.

Maybe I should try these special screenwriter word processing thingies...

evenwolf

why would a word processor help you express yourself?

These programs are simply for placing capital letters where they need be, and spacing your pages correctly.  There is nothing magical in the format of a script that will miraculously give you ideas.

You're better off with a notepad.

I'm talking about the format. I have no shortage of ideas, I just need to figure out how to get them on paper properly.

I once met Bob Ellis, who is one of Australia's most famous filmmakers (and political writers). He's made a lot of films and won many awards for them. He said everything you need to know about screenwriting can be taught in nearly two hours.

Kinda like AGS, really. In 2 hours, you can learn just about everything about it. Whether or not you put it to good, quality use, though...

I think Kubrick described the screenplay as "the least expressive form of writing in existence" (paraphrased). Writing's not easy, and there's no computer program that will make it so.

There are however many resources that will tell you the format for screenplays, including the link in my previous post. Here it is again, more specifically:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scriptsmart/screenplay.pdf

It even tells you how to have two characters talking over one another, plus speaking in foreign languages.

ali, the link isn't working

it works now..

Just to say, I downloaded the Script Smart template and it's ALOT easier than typing it all out on a blank document.,
