I just got this email:

I noticed that you are an aspiring songwriter. My name is M. Ebert and I am the founder of Kid Antrim Music, a forum geared towards the discovery and recognition of emerging and developing songwriting talent. We are currently welcoming submissions from solo acts or bands of any age group or music genre that would be interested in appearing on one of our 2003 Compilation CDs, which will be distributed to various record labels and radio stations nationwide.
If any of your songs are invited to appear, each CD would contain your contact information for listeners interested in getting more info on your music. To submit a song from your MP3.com website, please email us (KidAntrim2001@aol.com) and specify the website where your music can be downloaded and your song title(s). Upon submission, we also ask that you provide us with your postal mailing address so that we may properly contact you in the coming months with additional information.
This is a great chance to share your music with other songwriters and various factions of the music industry. For more info, visit www.kidantrimmusic.com.  We look forward to hearing from you soon, and hope you can help us spread the word about this venture.

According to their FAQ, I'll need to pay them 50 dollars if they pick me to be on a compilation. Does it sound like a scam to anybody?

Evil

How much money do you get our of it? If they put their adress and stuff I dont think they are. If they where why would they look for writers. I do think that 50$ is a bit much. But is up to you...

Trapezoid

I wouldn't get any money out of it, just "exposure" that I can't really confirm. And they don't list their address, just a PO Box.

evenwolf

I seriously doubt this sort of agreement would result in anyone going out of their way too much to get your name out there.

I'm sure if this place was legit, some google searches and so forth would reveal some proof of that.

One time I entered a poetry contest and they did the same thing. "You've won second place! Your prize is to buy this $50 book and we'll publish your poem in it!"

The poem completely sucked, too.

I googled, and mainly found the sites of dozens of bands mentioning that they were contacted by or included on a compilation of Kid Antrim. I searched in the Newsgroups, and there was a thread were the general consensus was that it's a scam, but I'm still curious what you people think.

Evil

I say send out demo copys of some stuff to us and we can give them to people we know. I let one of my friends listen to "Don't be like the sun" and he loved it. He's trying to get some money to get the cd, though I beleive it isnt on cd yet... But I have found your user name on Kazaa and found them there :)

evil: I am working on a new CD and plan on buying a bunch of copies at discount on MP3.com and selling them to people I know.
"Don't Be Like the Sun" IS on a CD. http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/cds/264/264213.html
And thanks for pirating my music :P :)

That should tell you enough.

juncmodule

It's a scam. Completely worthless.

Just go to the website.

TRIPOD. Popups.

How can someone that doesn't have the simple ability to register and pay for a website possibly promote you any better than you yourself could? I just don't have faith in someone that feels the need to use free webhosts and claims that they can help you. Why does he have an AOL address? Why not KidAntrim2001@KidAntrim.com? This is just my opinion and I may be totally off...but, it's how I judge people that "like my music".

What track of yours does he/she like? Has he/she seen you perform live?

Dude, send me Fifty bucks, I will put you "on a CD". Eh, sorry I just get so sick of people sending me emails like that.

One more thing...did it come via MP3.com or your personal email from your website or something? If it's MP3.com they let bulk emailers spam you from it. I HATE MP3.com...

Seriously though, save the fifty bucks and spend it on Flyers, blank CD's, a CD burner, or custom stickers, whatever...self promotion is where it's at. Worry about your home town first, then expand.

Yeah, I've gotten this type of email before, but this time they at least seemed to know that I was a teenager. Thanks for your advice though, I guess I'll pass.

evenwolf

Thing is- even if they do send out these compilations, music execs and radio stations etc get SOO much free crap that hardly any of it is ever paid attention to.

So keep that in mind too.

Paying $50 to be on some crappy compilation that you've heard about on the internet is not a good way to try to get into the music buisiness...

My advice is to contact a publishing company and try to get a deal with them. It's usually a lot easier than getting a deal with a record company (if that's what you want...). Once you've got one of publishing company interested in you, you have a lot bigger chance to get exposed to people in the buisiness.

Or just try to publish your music by yourself through the internet. CD is a dying media anyway. Digitally distributed music is the future although the major record companies tries to halt it any way they can until they find a way to make the big bucks on it.

Trapezoid

Yeah. In that case, the best way would be what I'm doing now. CDs on MP3.com can be bought and shipped nicely, but for a cheaper price you can just download the CD. Of course hardly anyone buys my music online, but as I said before I can buy a bunch myself for a reduced cost, then sell them for 10 bucks each to people I know. I did this with my last CD, but only made about 20 dollars because I didn't buy many copies and ended up giving a few away (as well as keeping one for myself.)

MP3.com's CDs are awesome. You can put artwork and everything on them, and they come nicely shrinkwrapped. :)

Hah.

Anyway, I'm off to Nigeria. I appear to have come across quite a sum of money. I won't say how much. Twenty Five Million Dollars. A wealthy businessman found me through his contacts on the internet. I am the last surviving heir of the Duke of Nigowigo and as such they wish to give me his vast estate and a sizable sum of money. However, this will never be allowed out of the country. Corrupt government officials plan to retrieve the money if it is not claimed by Jan 1st 2004. I have submitted my bank account details and am flying over to Nigera tomorrow to finalize the deal.

See you in a vast estate while sipping fine wines and swagging the best of cheeses. Oh wait, you don't have a rich late uncle in Nigeria that's left you his vast estate. Ha!
