For those who miss Roger on IRC during his long and frequent absences, or his random and frequent bouts of stupidity, and could use his neat non-IRC features once in awhile, like Googling and IMDBing and Spelling, as well as BlueCup and her 8-ball and...stuff... here is...

Desktop Roger v0.6!!!

It seems as though transparency might not work on some computers. So the page above features versions A (transparency) and B (opaque-ity). :P

Desktop Roger supports messaging! Use "Tell Username Message" and "Check Messages" (or he'll do it upon starting up) to access this feature. And, to access BlueCup, or to just switch bots, type in the bot's name or "switch".

Also, you can search for images using Google, by typing "Image search words". See teh main site for a full updates listing for this version. :)

Download it...NOW! OR ELSE!!!11!!1

A macro system, where you can teach desktop roger to do a bunch of things for you. Like, if I tell Roger to start IRC, he opens my mIRC. It would probably only work with a type-based interface, like those old AGI games. But it sure would be sweet.
Those who can, do, and those who can't brag about how they do it at least fifty times a day somewhere on the internet.

Scid: That's actually a pretty good idea. Like having "run IRC" automatically call up a list of user-defined actions to take. What else would this macro system do besides run files from your computer, so I can further develop this feature?

I also had this idea: Have Desktop Roger leave/receive messages to other users. When someone runs DeskRog for the first time, they could enter in a nickname. DeskRog would check a file on my web site to see if that nickname has already been chosen. If not, then it stores that nickname onto that online file, as well as the user's computer so that the username can be recognized everytime. Then, DeskRog could cheeck another file online to see if there are any messages for him/her. (S)he could also leave messages for other users to receive by writing to this file. After one week, if this message has not been received, then it is erased.

What do you guys think?

That sounds great, but I don't think that the messages should be erased.  Like what if I were to write a message to Pessi, and hes off in the service and wouldnt get it.  It is kinda on the verge of just private messaging that our forums already do though.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

The messages thing sounds good. Maybe you could have a random file stored online somewhere too, which holds all sorts of funny things roger could say. And everybody could add to that file by teaching their own roger new funny stuff to say. Kind of like what the IRC roger now has.

The macro system could be made kind of like DOS batch files with all sorts of useful commands such as running a program, saying something, starting internet explorer and loading google with a search string... useful stuff.

some more ideas
1. dance dance roger
2. other desktop buddy battles (ie: roger battles clipit)
3. upload list (file on desktop where if you put/save a file there he will upload it to a server)
4. reminder (ie: you have been on for 6 hrs, lunch meeting in 20mins, your still at work?)

rodekill

I'm just curious about how long it'll be before he becomes self-aware and builds an army of terminators to take over the world.
SHAWNO NEWS FLASH: Rodekill.com, not updated because I suck at animation. Long story.

hehe. Well, I'm working on DeskRog v0.2. He'll have a transparent background and an intuitive balloon-speech/query interface. He will also recognize a whole crapload of new commands.

File Upload System: Since it will be uploading to my own personal web space, I'd rather keep it to crucial things that only Rog can read/write, like messages, AGSers list, etc.

Teachable Roger: This is possible, but I'll save it for a later version. It's on my ToDo list now. :)

Dance: Animation isn't yet supported. That will take some time. For now, I'm getting all the functionality out of the way so I can later focus on eye candy.

Reminder: This is possible, but nto just yet. It'll take some time and plannign and figuring,  so it's now at the ass end of my ToDo list. :P

Macro System: This is next after messages.

So, the list is, in order of impotence...er, importance...
1. Messaging system (okay, messages WON'T be deleted). Users will have to choose a username. If that username is already on the list stored online, then (s)he has to choose another one. Otherwise, that name is added. From thereon after, whenever a user opens DeskRog (or types "get messages" or "messages") he will search the messages file online and retrieve all messages for that user, then delete them from the list. To leave a message, it adds to the end of the messages file.

2. Macro system. Users will be able to select from a list of commands (google, open URL, display message, run local file, wait x seconds, etc.) and compile them into a list or "batch file" like in the old DOS days. These batch files will then be stores as macros on the user's computer.

3. Ability to learn and store new abilities/responses online. You will be able to "train" Roger to respond to a statement in a certain way. This will be a simplified version of macros (hence its position after Macros on the list), where users can choose from saying something, running a file, and opening up a URL.

4. Animations! Ooh, Roger can dance, shrug, and pick his nose with the best of 'em! Well, he will soon anyway. :P

And there ya have it. DOWNLOAD Desktop Roger v0.2a/b NOW!!! BITCH!!!

Trapezoid

MillsJROSS

Perhaps, as an even more useful roger, you could make it so we could start porgrams using him. We'd type in something like "Roger open/start (File Name)." A person could then could tell Roger where the program is located. Making him mega useful!

Pet Terry

When I'm trying to run Roger with transparent background I got this error message:

Run-time error '453':

Can't find DLL entry point SetLayeredWindowAttributes in user32

Edit: And the other one gives the same error message as Trapezoid got.
<SSH> heavy pettering

I got an error message:
"I ares need teh ChilkatFtp DLL file! Give it to me: 0r g3t t3h sl1pp3ry treat!"

Which was upsetting... :'(
