Well, I got an iPod a week ago for my birthday but I can't really use it yet because I need to get ALL my songs tagged.

I have tried 3 or 4 different freeware programs (including itunes) for doing en-mass filename->id3v1 tag, but so far none of them are reliable enough to actually be helpful

Anyone know one of these programs that is reliable enough that you can actually select a whole folder and have it covnert without crashing?

MusicBrainz Tagger.
Probably the best MP3 tagger/renamer I've tried.

http://www.mediamonkey.com is also great, for going in and doing it yourself. MusicBrainz is an automatic type thing, but sometimes it can be innacurate. I suggest using both to really do your library justice.

Ah, then you're not using it correctly. :P The automatic-type tagging is... not very good. I just load up an album, go to the album's page, and tag the songs one by one.
Just look at this tidy playlist! All thanks to MusicBrainz.

This person likes Aesop Rock AND Stabbing Westward? AND Mew? AND....

We'd both have a field day playing each other's record collections!

I use "MP3 Book Helper".  It's name is a bit uncool but it is a very productive tool.

LGM

Oh yea, Al_Ninio? Look at mine made with Mediamonkey!!

lgm, you don't get the point.

musicbrainz tagger  is a frontend for the musicbrainz database. it hashes your files, looks the hash up and tags the file.
you probably spent ages tagging that manually. i tagged 40 gigs in about 2 hours. its drag & drop.
... it's quite easy being the best.

n3tgraph

Winamp can tag too right? - file info?
* N3TGraph airguitars!

LGM

No no no, I perfectly understand what MusicBrainz does. Just because it has a database and does it automatically doesn't mean it's RIGHT... I feel much more comfortable doing it manually.

no no no, you got it all wrong. but i won't go into detail now, cba to write a how-to :)

Oh, the database definitely makes it right in my case.
MediaMonkey (from what I gathered when I tried it, ages ago...) uses Amazon as the source for tags and whatnot.
I (as I'm sure you know, LGM. :P), listen to some obscure music.
Most of it didn't even show up on MediaMonkey, while in MusicBrainz it either: a) showed up because someone's added it to the database, or b) allowed me to import the album from CDDB or add it manually.
Then again I didn't tinker with MediaMonkey a whole lot, might've missed a thing or two.

LGM

Yea, that's one thing wrong about Monkey.. It won't check FreeDB when you're tagging, but it will when you rip... STRANGE!

Yea, I meant right as in... What it changes the tag data to may not be right.

dasjoe

well, it is right. always. you've been using it wrongly.

drag one album at a time in it, then mark them as wrong identified, locate the CORRECT VERSION of the album on musicbrainz.org withthe tagger. tag songs.

no mistakes.

I used many tag editors and many of them didn't suit me because of their lack of functionality. mp3Tag Pro is the best program for me. But it's only my opinion.

Bulbapuck

hahaha ;D
Another one? Only 4 years old this time eh?
