QuoteI think people on this forum are a bit too blasé to become touched by that...we've seen it a million times in cheap american heroic movies...it just doesn't do it...

In my eyes, nothing is worth dying for except possibly some family member or g/f or something...no bloody nation...

'Cheap American heroic movies' aren't real.  The emotion in that bar that night was real and no movie comes close to touching on it.  Not even close.

I think it's really sad that so many people on these forums are 'blasé' and don't believe in anything but themselves.

I dont think i love my country itself enough to die for it. There are certain ideals that my nation, along with all demoractic nations, hold that I think are so important that if for some reason my fighting and death would somehow perpetuate those ideals then I would do it. America is nice and all, but some of it sucks. If lets say, we had a new leader that wanted to abolish voting and religous and press freedom, and there was a movement to go and kick his butt, I'd go sign up for that. I think the Bill of rights is way more important then that flag.

I admit, that if there was a draft now, I'd prob. leave the country and live somewhere else, and experiance the same democractic freeedoms that I have here. You can vote and write whatever you want in England. or in lots of other countries. Democracy isnt limited to America, and in the long run, I care more about that then this place.

That not true.

I can believe in many things other than myself.

I believe in family.

I believe in my friends.

I especially believe in my girlfriend and everything she's achieved.

But I don't feel a need to get misty-eyed when the fireworks shoot off on Australia Day.

And, though I feel regret, I don't feel an overwhelming sensation to kick some terrorist ass when other Australians get hurt in a bombing, such as the one in Bali.

It would only matter personally if someone I knew was involved.

And even then, I wouldn't go out for revenge.

I'd face my sadness and carry on.

My life is too short to be worried about 'enemies'.

You may think that's nuts -- but then again, to each their own.

But I believe in other things besides myself.

And I think a lot of other people here do to.

"Don't believe in anything but themselves?" Shut up!
Do you think you know jack shit about what I care about or not?

If you have nothing else to contribute to this community with except for cheap platitudes and ungrounded insults, I suggest you take a break or something

Andail - If you got that irritated over something I said, perhaps you need the break?  Calm down fella!!  But I like the 'cheap platitudes and undergrounded insults' ... good word usage.  What I said/typed was neither, but good word usage none-the-less.

ALL
My statement was '...don't believe in anything but themselves.'  I didn't say anything about 'caring' ... so if anybody else was confused by my simple statement I apologize.  I hope this helped to clarify.

EDIT - DGM - I don't think you're nuts for feeling the way you do.  I guess I just don't understand it the way you don't understand my feelings on the matter.  So it balances out. /EDIT

All right, if that made you so impressed, here are some more examples of good word-usage:

This whole "sacrificing my life to my nation" has this fanatic tone to it.
The terrorists of al-quaida also are prepared to sacrifice their lives for a couple of wholy books and some sort of nation-concept.
Do you find it reasonable to think that you can be of more use to your nation while dead rather than alive? You're pulling the same bitter-sweet sentimental speeches as Bush.

Skip the propaganda part. This community isn't impressed by it.
And yes, most of us believe in hundreds of good things, but american hyper-patriotism isn't one of them.

Edit: Just saw your pixel-art collection of american GI-Joes or whatnot. You're the one needing a break, trust me.
Geez, you're 27 for crying out loud.

Trapezoid

Terrorists sacrifice their lives for offense, patriots tend to sacrifice their lives in defense. That's the difference I see, anyway. If one person is willing to die "for his country", it's useless. But if many are, then I suppose it's heroic. I certainly don't think it's selfish, just a little vague. It probably means that "if I were in a war, and had to put my life at risk just so, as part of a larger effort, future deaths could be prevented, then I would." I'm not sure what it has to do with America, but that's how patriots express it. It's an admirable sentiment that just sounds suspiciously jingoish.

Darth Mandarb

Pride in my country + Nostalgia for GIJoe + My being 27 = Me needing to take a break.

Well, that doesn't make sense.

Well everybody ... I guess you won't be hearing from me on these boards for awhile 'cause I obviously need a break.

I thought the 'Critics Lounge' was for creativity and artisitic development and this board is for 'General Discussion' and expressing opinions.

I guess I don't get why pixel art for G I Joe is wrong?  Nor expressing my views/feelings.

By the way, I still love Google searching.

Even I know that the GI Joe thing is probably more of a result of being an 80s child than anything else. And I've never watched it.

trap, I think we were 3 or 4 when that show was in its hey-day

Yeah, but I hang around an internet dominated by 20-somethings. If it was popular in the 80s, it's online nostalgia in the 00s.

I just laugh at the fact that the leader of the bad guys in SPC was a transvestite and the American producers did nothing to hide it.
