Hi all,

I wonder if this is indicator for popularity of a game (see screenshot):

I'm sorry if there is another thread for this.

"The relevancy of a key term is determined by counting the number of times a given term occurs. You may notice that on occasion a term has a higher relevance than the term you entered. This is because it appears more often in Google searches related to your term than your input term does."

So yes, sort of indicator for popularity I guess....

Calin Leafshade

Well not really no,

How many other search phrases start with "cosmo q"?

Most of my old bands show up in google and we were never particularly popular.

Presumably a phrase gets added to google even after only being searched once or twice.

I can't agree with that. Here is what I found for Google suggestions:
http://www.searchenginepromotionhelp.com/m/articles/search-engine-optimization/google-suggest.php
"Our algorithms use a wide range of information to predict the queries users are most likely to want to see. For example, Google Suggest uses data about the overall popularity of various searches to help rank the refinements it offers."

The Google Suggestions are based on the popularity of search queries. The reason they appear is because ACTUAL users are typing that into Google, and the query has become quite popular.

So I checked most of the AGS games. And the most popular AGS games have auto suggestions.

I love how you've masked this spam as some kind of general discussion on how google works

If Cosmo Quest came up in the list after just typing 'Cos'... now that would be fairly impressive.  But 'Cosmos Q' kind of narrows it down too much.  The only reason it comes up at this point is because there's little else for the engine to choose from.

It also depends on what's "trending".  At the moment 'Michael Buble' comes up ahead of Michael Jackson... but I guarantee in the months following Jacko's death The King of Pop would have been King of Google Michaels.

your game is definitely the most popular query starting with "cosmo q" but can you think of ANY other queries which begin with "cosmo q"?

it merely means you are listed on google and have been searched for before.

What do you want us to say?

"Congratulations, yes you're super popular and the quarterback WILL take you to the prom."

It's just an idea how AGS game authors can check their games popularity.

Not here he doesn't.

Calin Leafshade

it also depends if you are logged in.

Google takes your previous searches into account..

Bulbapuck

on my schools computer (where I have no account) "cosmos quotes" comes first :P

I didn't point to to the position. I point to the fact that the query is in the suggestion box. And before you get into the suggestion box the users typed this MANY times, which is the indication for popularity.

For an example: "Living Nightmare Deluxe" which is the 5th popular game this week in AGS don't have any suggestion. I'm sure that there are people who searched it before, but the game is not in suggestions box. That means that you have to make many queries before get in to google suggestion box.

Note: It's CosmoS Quest, not Cosmo Quest.

Calin Leafshade

I really dont think you have to search for stuff that many times for it to show up in the suggestion box.

Another example not in google suggestions box: IWWHIIWWHITOMIROTPG: The Game!

But seriously though, as far as I know the suggestions (as well as the order of the search results) are based heavily on from where you're surfing the web, at least the suggestion 'cosmos quest' was never brought up here even after I have typed 'cosmos ques'. So yeah, the suggestions may be considered some indication on the popularity of particular search words but you should never consider them so seriously.

Man, I love that Google have added image results to the main search page!

Yeah, it takes maybe a hundred or two searches for Google to start to register it, amongst other factors.

Also you might just have a high ranking web-page, which increases your chances of Google relating to queries quicker.

And Harg - I think you're wrong about this:

QuoteFor an example: "Living Nightmare Deluxe" which is the 5th popular game this week in AGS don't have any suggestion. I'm sure that there are people who searched it before, but the game is not in suggestions box. That means that you have to make many queries before get in to google suggestion box.

This is due to nothing more than its timestamp. The deluxe edition has been available for a mere 8 days. Google can take 2 to 10 or more weeks to pick up on things properly. Also "living" and "nightmare" are massive words and suggestions, where as "cosmos" and "quest" are quite niche.

If you want to get a real idea of your games popularity, you should incorporate Google Analytics on your website. Also StatCounter.com stuff which can track keywords pertaining your site and game. That is the only real way, not by typing it in Google search.
