Your game popularity & google

All that google optimization stuff is - in my opinion - not in any way an indicator of popularity. Using google analytics and its keyword search tool might give you some information about how popular search terms are at a certain point in time on a certain server - but I guess popularity should be measured in real feedback. If somebody with an unbiased opinion tells you he liked the game, that's the most important thing you can get. He took the time to comment and to tell you he liked it. Everybody can google up something, and it does not mean a thing.

If 300 people google "cosmos quest walkthrough", does that mean the game is too hard? If 5000 people google "cosmos quest" because there has been an article on some blog that this game was an example of bad adventure games in general, and they wanted to have a look at it just to see if it really that bad, does that mean your game is popular?

I think you should concentrate on creating something that is meaningful and important to you, and not get caught up in some irrelevant popularity search engine hocus pocus. Yup. And call your next game "free porn".
I, object.

My next game will be named "The" :P

Your attitude, perhaps? You probably didn't win too many friends with your CQ3 pulling situation, and trying to use Google to justify your game's worth seems awfully petty. It's not that big a deal, if you think your game is good, you shouldn't need to prove it to other people with anything other than the game itself.

Also, Google Trends doesn't seem to be 100% accurate...

I'm not getting pulled into any forum drama, but I've been watching this thread from the beginning and waiting to see where all the obvious hostility would go.
I do think the best thing you could do would be to make Cosmos Quest 4 and use it as your argument. I'd certainly play it.

EDIT: I said I wouldn't get pulled into any forum drama. If you need me, I'll be over there in that sort of direction.

ddq, just answer to this:
Why when I posted a question about google suggestions box and popularity of a game then all of you started to insult me? How a question like this can lead to insult?

Ryan Timothy B

Relax man.  Nobody was insulting you, they were just saying that the Google suggestions weren't all that relevant in popularity.

Also who hasn't Googled themselves or something they've done?  I've done it.  It feels good seeing a blog or something with a comment of your game, whether they're saying the game is good or bad, it at least means they played it.  And that's why we make the games in the first place.  To make a game we can call our own, and for that chance that someone will play it and enjoy it as much as we do.

No need to get angry.

I think we all know that this sort of thing is a sign of popularity. Otherwise I wouldn't have been so depressed by this phrase:

QuoteYour terms - nelly cootalot - do not have enough search volume to show graphs.

Dualnames

It's totally relative, for example HHGTG Remake is like more popular than everything AGS built EVAAAAAAHHHHH~!!!!!!!!.

Seriously, it's not a way to judge popularity.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Try it now. :-)

[edit]
sorry to go off topic, but this graph is kind of cool.  you can really see how Facebook totally shat all over MySpace (which is a shame because MySpace is tons better).

Obviously, even my mum asks when that game is going to be finished - she doesn't even play games, it's that popular!

The only google auto suggestion for "Heartland Deluxe" is "Heartland Deluxe walkthrough". The first actual google result is the game's entry in the database.  The next...13 results are also related to my game.

The 14th is a link to buy a Heartland Deluxe spa cover. Which is not affiliated with me. But which has a 1.5 pound density and metal-reinforced foam lining. A quality spa cover, I'm sure you'll agree.

Googling for "Heartland Deluxe" results in 321,000 entries. Mostly spa cover related. And John Deere tractors.

What's really amazing is this thread's reads to posts ratio! :O

I was rather impressed by the sheer amount of Indians who search for boobs and penises on the internet, myself.

Harg, just name your next game Boobs n' Penis: Quest for the Handjob of Uranus.  I guarantee your game will show up in many many more searches and draw much more attention to itself.

In fact, I think we should have a contest to provide Harg with the most google-search grabbing name ever, both by popular vote and by google analytics!

Just think what Boobs N' Penis might look like in glorious SPECTRUM-VISION!

Crimson Wizard

Google for "neku new trip". For me first two links point to 2 AGS games by icey games... you probably could hear about him lately... does this mean these games are popular?
Dunno...

Sorry, don't have much to say anymore  :P
