Hi,

I thought I may be able to get a critique of this image - my first attempt at aiming for the Lucasarts MI / DOTT / Sam & Max kind of style.

Ultimately some of the items would be objects (rather than part of the background image), but I thought it would look better for now to put them into the scene.

Here's the pic:

and if you want to see a bigger one, it's here:

BTW - it's supposed to be a scrolling screen.

What do you guys think?

Cheers,
t

I love the art style, it looks really fresh and original, yet a great 50's-like diner welcome feel to it.

The bubblegum machine's shadow is odd.. (or is it the very back stool on the bar that has odd lighting?) Should it be there like that? The door has an interesting shadow to it.. Also the shadow behind the balloon and teddy bear.. Is there a light coming from the user's view? if so, wouldn't you see a shadow behind the big chairs you sit on.. Just the lightning is really wishy washy, probably pretty minor but it kinda distracts me when looking at the scene.
Hope my criticism help :)

Man, I have been trying to draw like that ever since I joined here. You have got a lot of talent, use it wisely.

Haddas

'Tis a holy gift you have there, me lad. Don't waste it on booze like I did. Now I'm just an old pirate waiting for that kid to bring me back some polish for me peg-leg. Wannabe pirates, bah!

Morgan

Is the door in the back a unisex bathroom? It looks like one with the people above it. Anyway, I think its great. The only thing I notice is that the chairs are really close to the counter. How are you going to sit down?

Scummbuddy

Sometimes diners will use unisex bathrooms, but I think in this case, its just the door to the other doors for the individual bathrooms. Either way, it gets the point across that its a bathroom.

This is fantastic work.
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

I love it - when's the game coming out?
The only things I'd change would be the font on the EXIT sign, and maybe make the floor tiles smaller and less wonky.

Thanks for all the comments  - I've made some revisions based on some of the suggestions.

New image here:

and bigger image at http://www.bigtrak.com/images/diner8.jpg

Basically I straighted the floor a bit, tidied up the shadow on the gumball machine, replaced the poster (much better this time), and extended the tiled area where the stools are. You were right Morgan - it would be hard to sit at the counter!

SteveMcCrea - no game for a while I'm afraid, this is more of a proof-of-concept for the art style...

Wow, I really dig that style! DOTT has been an inspiration for my own artwork too.

The detail in your picture is great, it makes the image very interesting to look at.

Incidentally I have also drawn a diner once, which has been on these forums too. Maybe nice to compare our styles:

I love the art style, it looks really fresh and original,

I'm just wondering, taking into account he stated he's trying to emulate an existing style, whether this is a compliment or not ;)

Hehe.. Since I don't know a game offhand with the style he's trying to emulate, I'm taking his picture as is.. and to me it's original... Even if it is based off something else. :)

Great image Erwin_Br!

I hadn't seen your stuff previously, but it's interesting how many elements we have in common -  the stools, the jukebox, the floor etc. - but I guess most peoples visions of a diner are similar.

Looking forward to seeing your game.

Nice...very DOTT like and it reminds me of Proskrito's background:

The only weird thing is the shadow on the bar, it makes the bar seem like it's floating a little...

You have talent so hang on to it, well done Tamper, here is your white thing for your efforts:
Infact, you can have a crazy one too:

Nice! you guys ever think about doing a tutorial for drawing in lucasarts style? I know there are a lot of people that would like to emulate it, and you seem to know what you're doing. Think about it, ok? awesome backgrounds you guys, keep up the good work. Also, what game is that for? i'd be interested in playing it when its completed.
Are clones people two?

Why did you bring up an old thread? I understand that you really like his art, as do I. But did you really need to bring up a two month old thread to say so? He probably wont even read it. Please use pms next time.

MrColossal

why are you such a jerk, evil? is there a rule that he can't do this?

and he asked a question, he didn't just reply with an eye bugging emoticon...
"This must be a good time to live in, since Eric bothers to stay here at all"-CJ also: ACHTUNG FRANZ!

Evil

I'm sorry if I was a 'jerk'. I just thought it would be in our best intrest to use some pms. Its been forty days since anyone had postedin this thread and I doubted he would get his question. The question was sort of directed tward him, wasn't it?

Squinky

Damn. I never saw this thread before, and I gotta say that theres some inspiring stuff going on....
