And very appropriately named this thread is, as it was Deep Thought who answered the question to Life, The Universe and Everything...
Which is why I brought it up in the fist place, you silly person.

LordHart

I thought you brought it up because people were talking about the meaning of life and philosophical shit... ::)

Some recent theories have said that after a while black holes, very slowly mind you, get smaller and smaller until they are no longer a black hole. I can't quite remember the science behind it, though. However, as I'll be dead a long time before the termed "End of the Universe" I'm not too concerned with it.

Deep thoughts? I'm very open to saying I can never prove to myself I know anything. But what I think, or think I think, or think that I am thinking I think...You get the point...is that if there is a god that the universe was created as a mirror, so god could see itself. Try to picture nothing in existence...just a big black void (I'd say don't imagine any of the dimensions of lenght, but I don't think anyone can truly process that image, as it doesn't really exist). Now let's assume that you're the only person in this void. You have no body, nothing. You can't hear anything, you can't see anything, you can't touch anything. How do you prove to yourself you exist? You make yourself a body, with all these nice fancy doo-dads like legs and such (mind you this is you I'm talking about not god). You're still in this black void, and you can see (now), that you do indeed exist. Your arm moves and everything. But yet, if you have nothing to interact with, you are still can't be too sure that you exist. So you make the ground to walk on, the air to breath, vibrations to listen with and see with. What I'm getting at here, is that if there is indeed a entity, I like to believe that existence is just a mirror image of him. Anything/person "evil" is part of the god. At some point this being thought ideas of right and wrong. The god tries to suppress this. It's like when you look in a mirror and see a zit and have the need to rid yourself of it. So god thinks is good, but it's like any of us, we have emotions that if said allowed or acted on, would be considered bad by society. We try to rid ourselves of these thoughts (most of us).

In the end, though, this is all just me having some free time on my hands and thinking of stuff. I'm agnostic, and I just think to myself, this may or may not be true. I can't prove it.

That may well have been my justification for bringing it up, but it was the thread title that made me think of it, thus becoming my actual reason for bringing it up.

And don't roll your eyes at me, you cheeky bugger.

Sadly, I have no eyes... ::)

Ah, finally the return of the philosophical thread. I remember when it appeared three times during one summer (2001 or something), and eventually drove all people mad.

Here's a summary of what happened:

1. Approximately three people, one of which was MonkeySpank, claimed to be solipsists.
2. Helm yelled at them.
3. Somebody quoted Dylan.
4. Altogether, the debates comprised 12982 jokes that referred to the Hitch-hiker's guide to the galaxy.
5. Bspeers made his bi-annual guest appearence.
6. It was concluded that the biggest philosophical question of all had to do with whether Davy Jones was alive or not.
7. Some people from i-mockery came over and mocked us.

That's pretty much it.

Babar

Wooooo! I can see into the past! I had no idea of a previous Philosophical thread (or who Davy Jones is, although I know about his locker), but I sensed a looming question about.....solipsism!. And I did not even know about the word before this thread! I had to look it up on the net, bacuase my philosophy professor is mad at me since I dropped his subject :(. Also, there should be a ton more of jokes referring to The Hitch-hikers Guide to the galaxy. That book is the cradle of Philosophical thought! Sorry for the inconvinience! oohhhh.. Oh yeah. I hearby declare myself a solipsist. None of you exist. I don't even know why I am telling you this, as you don't exist. Oh well....I guess it appeases my sense of emotion

A theory about the purpose of life....

As far as we know, this is the only planet around with life on it. And one day, when the sun blows up, it will be cooked, and everything will die. Because life is confined to this planet, there is no way out.
Untill now. What with our science and technology and rockets and genetic-fuckery, we can take life and spread it to other planets, other solar systems.
Mankinds purpose is to inpregnate other worlds. The earth has hit puberty, and we are it's jizum.

We are nothing less than the holy spunk of Gaia herself, friends, and have no-one tell you otherwise.

But was it Earth we started on, or did we terraform earth, or was it just right for us when we arrived. We lost our history from our previous location, and infected Earth with disease, and increased erosion, fucked it up & moved onto ....

Have we already infected Mars with some form of bacteria? we have at least dumped some alien rubish there, there's also pleanty of alien dust on earth from many meteorites & Asteroids, and water from comets, maybe also some bacteria that survived.

the theory of relativity comes in right here, but the end cause is the final answer, but then what lies beond that? I guess the time gets sucked into the black hole too causing time to start again, but there is also some fragments that weren't sucked into the black hole and time has escaped them, therefore leaving two seperate times existing within the same time, that eventually blend in with each other to create another phenomena that we canot yet comprehend, and the consequence of that is not able to be judged, but the answer will be more simple than we think.

But within that lies the true answer, but to get that answer we need to reach that point in time, so in the mean time it's irrelevant what actually happens, and the true center of the universe is you, and seeing as that is Babloyi, why the hell did you come up with this rubbish without even knowing it.

Hang on while I just refresh my deep understanding of philosophy that I obtained entirely by reading Sophie's World...

Deep things:

One can never know if you are in reality or in a simulation of reality (Matrix, Existenz, 13th floor) or in someone's imagination (Sophie's World) unless the controllers of that reality LET you know. But then, are they really real?

My Sims don't believe I exist so I flooded the whole place and just let one guy live (and all the animals, of course). Didn't help. Then I took direct control of one sim and did all kinds of miracles that could only mean I was controlling a simulation, but they still didn't believe.  Cheeky little AIs!

If either time or space is infinite, then all possibilities of our imaginations will exist somewhere in time-space, including the planet where all the lost pens go...

Time-travel will never be realised becuase otherwise there would already be time-travellers all over the place. You can argue that they are just subtle, but since when has an invention once invented been controllable: guns, nuclear weapons, etc. all end up in the "wrong hands" eventually. Ooops, I forgot Eric... need to modify theory

Science dismisses the meta-physical as nonsense, but it is kind of by definition "un-scienceable".  So we can't prove or disprove that there is  a God (or which one he/she is...)

Faith can achieve both great and terrible things

Other people's point of view will always be at least slightly different from yours. If everybody respected that, the world would be a lot more peaceful. It's hard to do, and the best of us get it wrong sometimes (and I'm far from the best at this).

No-one is perfect.
