New stuff is added at the far end of the thread. Now and for ever.

Version 1
Version 2
Just for kicks
I need opinions on which style of lighting is better. I would like the image to have a somewhat creepy atmosphere. Any tips on how to make it creepier is also welcome. I am aware that the source of the light is nonexistent at the time. I will add it and post a new version if needed, but I think you are able to see where it's supposed to be? (on the pillar)
so please; tear it to shreds!

EDIT: New version!

The first version seems to have more of a cartoony feel, whereas the second seems more serious. I suppose it depends what type of game you're going for.

I think the building looks sort of welcoming. Perhaps if you made the bottom set of windows less white?

But the image looks wicked!!

kaaZ

The last two steps (according to the progress thingy) seem to kill all the nice details you've added...I think the opposite aproach is better...make the image so that colors, tone and darkness are correct, keeping in mind that it will be set at night. Now instead of darkening everything except the area where the lightsource is casting it's light...Lighten those areas up...
The colors just don't seem right for a nightscene...The buildings look as they would look during the day only with a nightly sky in the back...
Still, I think it's a pretty good b/g but it could be better...I liked it better before you darkened everything up...

Hopes this helps...

New version! Check top post

Jimi: I'm going for the more serious tone. A bit "Shadow of the Comet" inspired if you know what I mean? Thanks, man! (Jimi lives btw!  ;) )

kaaZ: Some damn good advice, and I get you completely. Thanks! This new version is based somewhat on your tips, but mostly on me f***ing around in photoshop before going to bed. Just thought this version looked cool, but I'm tired. Your advice is not forgotten and will be implemented!

Your newest version is much better, you really achieved the creepier look you were going for. It has a lot more atmosphere too, and the corona on the light works well.

Evil

Yes, the third version is the best. However, it would look better if you set the fog as a transparent object and had them walk behind it. More contrast would be nice, bring out those blacks.

Blackthorne

YOke,

That third version is sweet.

I can see already on the third it will look a bit funny having you're char in front of the mist....

YOke

about the fog... i'll test some things in ags and see what i can pull off... if it doesn't look good the fog has to go...  :'(

Evil: might have to push the contrast a bit, yes. it will look brighter fullscreen than here. the problem with dark images is that they look very different depending on peoples monitors. i currently have a scratched up, shitty (i can say shitty, can't i?) monitor, so i don't really know how it will turn out on a good, well calibrated screen. :)

Thanks for all the nice words. I'll try to get a new version out later tonight...

The third version is indeed the best, tons of atmosphere there :). It eliminates the problem of emptyness on the road, as there is fog. The lightsource however is very bright to be making so little light it seems. Adding more lighting would be more appropriate Imo, and would add contrast. Or just make the light source emit less light, it could be better for the atmosphere. I'm not too sure what the black blob-thing is near the hay, maybe it just looks weird on my monitor. At first the shape of the house was unclear to me in the first 2 versions, but it looks great in this version :).
The grass is a bit squarish, since it's some sort of farm area I'm guessing it's natural grass, not laid down, so I think it'd grow a bit more freely, possibly even get in the road.. This is really nitpicky though, if it's too much trouble to change it i'd just leave it as it is, it's beatiful. :)

Lastly, I would like to request a tutorial on the fog in Photoshop. I think I can figure out how to make everyhting with a hint of blue color, but the fog would be really nice to know how to make. :)
I also have a suggestion how to use the fog in the game- make the fog either an object or a walkbehind, and the character should walk through it (actually, I don't think this'll work with an object, you could try though. An object will allow you to animate it, otherwise you can make it a bg animation. You can probably manipulate transparency and RGB settings to use it properly in AGS). I hope you won'ty have to get rid of thr fog.

Wonderful background! :)

You're quite right about the black blob down in the corner. It will be removed! :)
They lightsource is on the top of my list. I will add an actual well-drawn lamp so that I can tone down the strength of the lightsource a bit. :)
I will also add some more detail to the road. Grass, rocks and such and a few pieces of farming equipment here and there.

How to make fog: (Dirt-easy)
The fog is two layers with 10% opacity. one for general fog, the other for giving it thickness in some areas. Just used a "dotted" standard brush to paint in the fog, and filled it out on the other layer... bah... i might do a picture tutorial... not to good at explaining with words... ;)

*sorry for the double post, deleate this one dudes*

Chicky

hey yoke, didnt see this thread.  As ive said before this is a brilliant scene, but i just love the fog. its a shame about the problem, couldnt you do somthing with the set character transparancy?

i dunno,  im not too great with the technical stuff.

YOke

good new everyone! i've tested the fog in ags and the damn thing actually worked! how about that!
i guess i could animate it... but then i would propably have to make it optional out of speed reasons...
there will be no new versions tonight as i will spend all night figuring out how to draw FoA style characters.

Ciao for now!

OSC: Two posts? I'm not paying you double if that's what you think!

I know there have been posted lots of images of farms here lately. Please have patience as I want your opinions on yet another farm...  :P

Don't quite know how to get the ground right for a proper feeling of depth... There will be a doorhandle, and the roof of the barn will be fixed so that it doesn't look like gray paper...  :P well... do your worst!

P.S. Paintovers are appreciated if you feel like takeing the time.

I'm not so sure about these ... so I did two:

Wasn't sure if you wanted a dithered/patterned look so I made the other version as well.

- fixed barn roof (couldn't resist)
- added some dimension to other roof as well
- added some shadows

Hope it helps!

YOke

Thanks man! That helped! Especially the barn roof actually! Now I know how I'm going to do it! ;)
The shading was almost exactly how I had it previously (the one on the right, that is) so I guess I should just learn to trust my instincts... :P
I'm sort of exploring new territory with this style... heck, I'll just post one more bg in progress for you to give me feedback on! :)

Should give you quite a clear view of the style I'm going for... More c&c please! :)

Moox

i love it, but somehow the counter looks like its not touching the wall

YOke

I think it may be the lack of shading doing it. I'll look into it when I wake up tomorrow... :)
