hey i was just wondering why there isnt many realy cartoony projects here like day of the tentical style or same and max or like leisure suit larry 6
that type of style

theres lots of amazing artwork on here but its eather really realistic or its like the oldschool sierra style with lil blocky dudes nothing really cartoonish
the latest thing iv seen is that guys thread about the monkey island fan game thats the first thing iv seen thats really like a cartoon....just wonderin  :)

Gilbert

There're many such games, eg.
Permanent Daylight
Earwig is ANGRY!
Rodekill
etc etc.

Just browse the games page and watch the screenshots.

Ali

I think the reason many people lean towards sierra-style characters is because the visual conventions are more straight-forward and thus easier to reproduce in those games than in games like Day of the Tentacle.

If you draw a room with all straight lines and one or two point perspective, it will look quite like an old sierra backdrop. If you draw a room with wobbly lines and confused perspective it quite possibly won't look anyhting like DOTT.

But Gilbot's right, there are a load of games that have succeeded in a more cartoony style.

Davis

Yeah, what s/he said. LucasArts style==hard to draw.
"So I've proved my point a thousand fold," snorts Davis. "Ho ho."

Meowster

I disagree.

Lucasarts style = Easy to Draw
Sierra style = Ridiculously Easy to Draw.

Anarcho

That's wierd, it always seemed to me that people here like to draw in the lucas-arts fashion with wacky dimensions.  I also thought that it would be easier to draw that way...but i've only ever done a few backgrounds in that style.

DanClarke

im trying to make my characters in a very lucas kind of style, my BGs have my own personal touch to them though, so theyre not quite as 'twisted'. In terms of design, i dont think anything comes close to the lucas games creativly.

LordHart

My backgrounds are heavily influenced by Sierra I think, especially some of the earlier backgrounds I did. Its mostly because I grew up playing the Space Quest games, and love that style, and also because I first started working with SCI Studio...

Your kidding right? No offense to the artists of AGS, but I have yet to see a game produced by AGS with realistic images. Not that I believe its easily possible, expecially because most of the images for games are produced on simple paint programs. So unless you take actual photographs for backgrounds and spirits (which I think a few people did, but I am afraid I didn't bother to play those games) it doesn't look realistic. Which, I think, is not really a bad thing.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

By "realistic" I think he just means normal proportions, and no distorted perspective..

Anarcho

exile was pretty realistic...not by current tech standards, but in the way that PQ3 or something was realistic looking.

MrColossal

Don't tease us!
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

MrColossal

No I didn't abandone it. I don't abondone my babies, I sell them into white slavery.

But yes, the game is still being worked on, I'm just very very slow...

It'll come out and then you can play it and tell me how awesome it would have been 3 years ago
