the tree is 'non negotiable' as i'm fond of it, just want to know what everybody thinks?

I like it!

I think the coloring of the character looks pretty good and blends in with the background well (considering the lighting I mean)

Do you have any animations of the young girl yet?

This game is going to be cool!

DanClarke

Cheers, im working on the animation at the moment, just testing really, i want to get most of the backdrops done, then i can concentrate on the rest.  ;D

Evil

The contrast is still way to low. Kick it up a bit and it'll look great!

DanClarke

i think it varies depending on monitors, ive already put it up once. Does anybody else have this problem with contrast?

LordHart

Nice, but I'm guessing its a jpg file... so thats why it is getting kinda pixelated on the edges of objects. :(

I know it's a pain in the you-know-what, stupid monitors... For me, and I finally found an old monitor that seems just about perfect, the brightness is just fine - but the contrast could be increased a bit more.

Very nice image and stuff.

DanClarke

i may have overdone it a touch lol.

Synthetique

i'd go with the old contrast... you shouldn't listen to people who only can say "CONTRAST" as C&C.. if it looks good to you, it looks good. and it looks good. to me that is.
remember that the pic will be fullscreen, maybe with black around it. it'll look nice..

I love it. especially the tree. That is just THE dang finest tree I've seen in a while.

Though I prefer the lighting in the original. I think the 'blue-iness' of it is great!

Show us some more backgrounds as soon as you finish them :)

AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

DanClarke

thanks again for the feedback, i too prefer the original, as the newer screen looks oversaturated.

Proskrito

the only thing that looks a bit strange to me is that all the background is made with blue hues. Its very moody this way, and it would look perfect for me if i were looking to the background alone, but the character is just a bit tinted.
I mean, the girls boots could be the same colour as the tree trunk, but boots are brown tinted with blue, and trunk is all blue. I hope i made sense.
Also, i think you could add depth if the sky were darker.
Overall, its an excellent image!! : ) i love your style.

TOO MUCH BLUE!

Seriously though, that hurts my eyes.

Kyle

Night scenes are supposed to have lots of blue. :P

Well that's what the current discussion was about, so I thought I'd offer my completely subjective experience with monitors.

Then again it depends on the style you are going for. A cartoon-type style has very vivid, saturated colors.

i know what you mean about the monitors, its just that contrasts on monitors vary. As for the contrast on the image, i think ill be keeping the original, as i feel to much contrast will overdo the image. It is a cartoony style, but it's not necessarily brash and bright colours through and through.

Evil

I dont think its over contrasted. I like the new one much more. Theres still the issue of the tree roots not sticking out far enough. But it would be great if you left it as is.

Quick modifications:

x2

(i) Lowered the saturation.

(ii) Tinted the pic to a more cyan/turquoise hue. Just a matter of taste, blueish will make it more MI1 - 2, more cyan/turquoise CMI-EFMI.

(iii) Added shadows to give more depth and make the lighting more interesting. The tree was very 2D, with only shadows and highlights on the edges.

(iv) Added a gradiant in the sky, making the upper part darker (skys tend to be lightest at the horizon).

(v) Added reflection in water.

Quotei'd go with the old contrast... you shouldn't listen to people who only can say "CONTRAST" as C&C

Most beginners pic's have too low contrast, so if the comment keeps popping up, it s because it s a common fault. (not calling DC a beginner of course, since he s obviously very skilled.)

It is important to always lower the saturation once the contrast has been upped though, otherwise the colors will bleed.

Btw, your style s most excellent.

Hey loominous, looks nice, i think ill go with your idea of shadow though. I want to keep the blue theme too. As for the reflection, i had drawn this in, but seeing as i was going to animate it seperately i didnt include it in this particular shot. Thanks for the help though  ;)
