Hello!

Okay, so I've got this background.

Now I'd like to create the interior to it, using this kind of perspective that I tried to make some idea screens with.  This perspective gives me trouble, as you'll see by my unfinished and horrendous stairs!!!!! But basically, I'd like to create a weird Saloon-type place, with a bar, some tables, and a stair case to a second level.

So, before I progress on, I'd like to get some ideas and help from some of you out there, who are good at these things.
Any other questions let me know, paintovers or demos would be cool too.

Hmm, How bout a spiral staircase in back corner

Here's an attempt at the stairs :

Drew some reference lines in red to get the perspective right...on second thought I think my edit is still a bit off perspective...but I hope it still gives you a clue on how to fix this issue....

sorry, i ran out of time, i had to go to a soccer game, that i was late for. so i did this earlier, and now i dont have any more time for now. i hope it helps.

the stairs look better on a grander scale, not so much on this little one.
i squeezed the middle to add room for the top floor and to add a nice little touch to the outside area. ill show an example of what i had in mind probably tomorrow
- Oh great, I'm stuck in colonial times, tentacles are taking over the world, and now the toilets backing up.
- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

Hey guys, thanks!  This is great.  I just checked the thread, and I'm going to be using your help as I progress.

Here's what I worked on today, before I checked the thread.

This is basic, without much editing and such, but ideas for decorating the saloon/bar would be cool.  I like the idea of a curving staircase.... and I want a piano in it too.  It needs tables, and some kind of light.  I think I'm going to make a candle chandelier for it.  Anything else, though?  I made the actual bar kinda quick today.... so keep the suggestions coming, it's good to see them.

You should be more cautious with the perspective here...
Neither Kaaz's or Scummbuddy's version is very good in this respect, nor is Blackthorne's original draft.

The textures work pretty nice, though, and you seem to do them pretty fast, which is interesting.

A composition suggestion would be to have the stairs in the back of the room, since that would hide the character in the pretty awkward way it does now.

A quick advise I see when copying and pasting the image and zooming in it... Use less noise, of whatever effect you use, it looks weird.

If the noise comes by the "jpgfication", excuse me.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Blackthorne

The noise could be from JPEG-ification, but mostly it's the effect I was going for - to look a little pixel-ized and noisy.

Andail, maybe you could show me what you mean, maybe with a quick sketch or something. I'd really like to make a good background here, so I'm constantly revising.

So, does anyone have any ideas for the staircase in this pic?  Or any other ideas as to what should decorate the saloon?]

Nothing for the stairs here, but for decor, you may want to consider a bull's skull and/or horns, liquor bottles, a mirror, a barrel, a spitoon, hooks (maybe... like to hang a hat or jacket on), some wanted posters, possibly a spider web...

I also suggest that you take a good, hard look at the perspective  in this one and/ or test the screen out with a character (even a stand-in, if you need to). To me, the 2nd level of the place (the walkway or whatever you wanna' call it) looks like it's not really up high enough, especially when you consider the number of stairs you seem to be thinking of using. Of course, maybe it's just me....

First- great textures! Love them.

The problem i see here is, that you are using too strong perspective for such an angle and relatively small room (as bar desk suggests). Also, in this case, you should be using 2 point perspective.

Here's a really quick "edit" how you could fix it up a bit, it's not perfect yet by any means, but it's could serve you as a start to tweak it up. The second pic, is there just to make a bit less confusing what is what.

Igor,

Thanks!  The perspective is really what's killing me! Heh.  I have an idea, you know - but sometimes the execution just doesn't turn out the way your mind imagines in!  It'll keep on working, and give it another go.  I'll post another image soon.

Ozwalled,

Cool suggestions!  I'll try and make some for the next edit too.

Thanks again, all - I mean this is really great, and what I love about the critics lounge, when it's working!!  Helping refine ideas is what I try to accomplish here.

Now that said, someone make me 24 sprites to inhabit this room.  I'll check back in two hours, if there are none, I'll pout and cry.   ;D
