I was made to giggle

Not long ago, Andail popped the RON games on as the pick of the month, giving special mention to my game, the petulantly titled "Nihilism"

This was enormously flattering.

Then I looked at the RON site and ordered games by their ratings... Nihilism came last!

THIS made me to giggle!

Also, the disparity of opinion in the two on-line reviews of RL&BAT made me giggle a little (although I think AGA was a little snooty about it. Lighten up!)

I was once told as a child that if you can make something that people like or hate, then you've successfully made something interesting (and thus, in my measurement, good) and you've only failed to do anything worth while if people are un-moved.

As such, I feel a little bit proud to have opinion divided over my games...

I just wish people would divide their opinions over VPET, since I at least made a web-site for it! Sheesh!

Does anyone else ever read their own reviews? Does anyone else find they get bad reviews (or are people always too polite?)

DragonRose

The one and only game I've made, Wanderer, was never reviewed anywhere, but the comments on it were interesting.

Most people said "This is very good for a first game," or "I liked the character." Only one person had the guts to say that it was a crappy game.  Three or four people attacked him for being horrible before I logged on to defend his point of view.

The game WAS crap.  I couldn't figure out how to get rid of Roger, so he became a guard that floated over a castle wall. The animation frames didn't line up, and I couldn't figure out how to add pictures for the inventory, so I actually used the pink poster and said it was flowers. THE PINK POSTER for god's sake. And I used it TWICE.

Where am I going with this? People sometimes really don't want to hurt other peoples feelings, so they are too darn nice.  I'd rather get a bad review on my bad game than a sugar coated good review.

I remember that Wanderer game, it was really unpolished. But you could tell that you were at least trying and thats what made it better than some of those first time games....But, know that I think about it, I remember some chessy looking things called bunyips or something....what was that all about? Heh....

I too am often amazed at reviews of my games, When I made that demonslayer action shooter game I thought it would go over real well, as that sort of thing wasnt being done much.....but nobody took to it it seems. But then I made a crappy 1st person shooter thingy and won an ags award.....Also, Fry 3 is by far my favorite game I've made, but for some reason Fry 2 gets more attention, even being put up on the almighty underdogs....Just goes to show you that life is nutty....

I'm amazed (and impressed!) that you could have such presence of mind to stick up for the person who was pointing out the failings of your game Dragon!

I've always found that a man's game is like his willy, he KNOWS where it's failings are, and even if someone acknowledges where it's really strong points are, if they dare point out anything NOT positive a man is apt to cry:
"FIRE RAIN DOWN ON THE HOUSE OF THIS OBVIOUS LESBIAN!!"

Perhaps this is where being a female AGS'er comes in handy.

No penis = no irrational desire to deny your own failings...

Interesting theory non?

I made this quick MAGS game some time ago, 'Once upon a time in the 70s', and I like how people are honest when voting for it:

QuoteRating: 29% (14 votes)

:P

I don't mind, the game is nothing to be proud of.

My other game, on the other hand, 'Search for the christmas present', I'm proud of that one. And the rating is of course:

QuoteRating: Need more votes

Now I'm not expecting anyone to go and play and rate my games. I haven't really released anything really good so far, and sometimes I'm thinking maybe I should just remove my crappy games for good. But when I release good stuff (I will), I want to see replies that explain what could be improved and how. I don't want to see stuff like, "OMG this game rocks!", "Nice.", "It sucks balls.", "It was okay." or "Well I didn't really like that and that and that, but otherwise it was great." I too want honest replies with tips on how to improve stuff for my next game.

Is that why some people put their games in the "Long" category when they're obviously not?

I think my games pretty much fall into the same category, especially Ace Quest, of hate/love. Personally, I love my games, I think I could do better, given the time and motivation (which currently I'm lacking both), but I usually get a few people who like my games, which is all I need. And the reviews on my game, aren't so bad, so I'm content.

Jeeze, SSH, you just had to mix the penis metaphor with the warts metaphor, didn't you? Ick.

Mostly: I don't think that me saying my game is crap has anything to do with me being a girl.  It's more to do with me being a bit of a perfectionist.  I know what I like, and Wanderer was something I did NOT like.

In my world, "girls" and "perfectionists" are almost always one and the same.  ;)

Also, I'm not sure that there was enough evidence to suggest the warts were a metaphore.

MrColossal

I'm a perfectionist, cap'n...

I was saddened by you Cap'n when you posted a while ago saying "WOO! 100 downloads for VPET!" I was like "Only 100! What the hell?" I don't know what it is but 6 Day Assassin gets like 300 a week [once it got 1300+ one week] and I haven't advertised that game in the sligthest, I don't know what it is.

I think you should find a way to remake VPet into a flash or Java game, I think tons of people would play it then in their off time at work. It's a unique game that could easily be stuck in Yahoo games and people would play the ever loving shit out of it.

As for reading reviews for my own games, there aren't that many in english. I notice that the czechs love 6da and I have no way of reading those reviews so I imagine they like it since there seem to be a lot of site with it listed, or maybe it's a big joke they're playing on me.

I'm quite interested in knowing why Spellbound hasn't gotten the same attention as 6DA, maybe because 6DA is so small and easily downloaded and runs on just about any computer while Spellbound is almost 10 megs and 32 bit?

Hey, my review is very flattering! I love that game. And don't worry about AGA. His opinions don't matter because he hates everything.

It's amazing how inticing the phrase "Meow, baaaaby!" is to adventure gamers.

That's where Ron Gilbert was lacking with his version of MI3.

VPET is yet to get 300 downloads EVER! I think that maybe my web site www.sylpher.com/vegetablegames is either bad, or under-exposed... I think it's under-exposed... I've no idea what to do to get people playing it. I guess making a flash version of VPET is a good idea, but I would rather people played what's already there, as a flash version of VPET2 would have to be pretty seriously dummed down...

Who will?Ã,  ???

Also Oranges, I put a whole innovative story element into VPET2 specifically because you'd brought my attention to the fact that you don't like games without a story... I don't think I ever asked what you thought to that in the end...

To be fair, I don't think ANYONE has ever told me they got past chapter 1, but there IS story progression... It's not story LEAD, but it PROGRESSES in a way that was (as far as I know) pretty unique!

Eggie

Usually people tell me they like something I've done, or they don't bother telling me anything...
Occasionally I get a 'you suck'. Once I even got a 'your dog draw all your pic'.

When I do get good, constructive critisim I feel every bit as happy an' jiggly as if the person had just said "ur arwesnome!!"...Probably even moreso...
