There is no conection to AGS, but since this is the website I spend most of my time, I cannot stop myself from posting here...

The Flood in Asia, the more I see on the news about it... trying to imagine the big number of people who died (some consider the possibility of 50,000 people... just died in a few seconds) and not to mention the hundred thousands who lost everything they had, which was surely not much before anyway. How can the father give food to his kids when he lost his fishing boat? Or how is the family going to live when there little field is soaked of salt walter and wont be able to produce any plants for many many many years?
And then I go shopping in Berlin, and see so many people again spending so much money on fireworks for the new years eve. And it makes a little bit angry and very very sad...
Please, everyone, dont buy fireworks this year... send a little help to those who suffer now.

Actually, now is close to 60,000. I would consider the possibility of about 100,000 died during the earthquake and tsunamis, and about 10 times as that to die from diseases if nothing is done in the next few days/months :'(

Oliver

And it seems to me that this doesn't seem like a big thing, comapred to what was going on after 9/11. 2000 people died in the WTC and close to 60.000 died in Asia (if that's true ofcrouse). But guess those two aren't the same things either.

Anyway, nevermind that.

My mother was just going to go to Malaisya (or whatever) in January. Now she is scared to go and probably won't go. I wouldn't let her either!!!
You got it!

They only need money donations, nothing else. Because is much more expensive to transport any other sort of donations, especialy from far away places like Canada and US.

I took this information from CBC Newsworld.

I was quite interested that there wasn't a big post about this 3 days ago, I sort of started a thread about it 2 days ago, but I was just trying to start it up in a pointless thread that got locked (a few posts down)

I guess it must of taken time to spread over the christmas period as people were'nt infront of their tv's.

How long before Bush declares mother nature a terrorist, and goes out to destroy her (oh that's right, he's been trying to all along)

Here's what I posted, and it may have a few contexts that were intended for the original thread it was in:

QuoteYes, the Tsunami (tidal wave) in Sout East Asia & surrounding areas is quite a disaster if anyone has not heard about it yet.

which is fairly old news by now, but it makes you think that people worry so much about terrorists these days only through media, that natural disasters like this kill so many more people with no intent. and are still made out to be a terrible thing.

To be completely honest, natural disasters have their place, and if they take me at some stage, that's just part of life.

Any coast line is suseptable to these particular disasters, that's the risk you take living there. same with bush fires if you live in the bush, volcanos if you live near one, floods if you live near a river, cyclones (hurricaines, typhoons) if you live in the areas, ice falling and killing you if you live in a cold climate, earthquakes if you live near a fault line.

it's all part of natural selection, don't get me wrong, it is a tragedy, and I feel for those affected, but the way the media loves this especially over the hardest part of the year to get a story is annoying.

Oh yeaah that's right, I can see the conspiracy coming, 5000 suicide bombers went diving in the Indian Ocean, and all detonated at the same time to cause this, and before all that they tested it by starting this thread.....

Barbarian

My heartfelt prayers go out to all of those victims and thier families affected by this terrible tragedy.  I'm currently residing in Asia, and last year I also spent a few months teaching English in Thailand close to the area that was hit there.

I was in contact with some of my friends there, and luckily they are okay and we not in the area hit. Still, I feel deep sorrow in regards to the devastation the earthquake and resulting Tsunami caused.

I've already given a donation to help towards the victims.  I feel rather helpless in what I'm able to do, but please say a prayer for the victims and thier families, or if you don't believe in prayers then use your "willpower" and send your out your blessings and positive thoughts.

When a terrible tragedy such as this happens, it really "wakes you up" and help you to more appreciate each day as a gift. Reach out and help someone, do what you can within your means to help make this world a better place.

Best regards.

Timosity, don't be so hopeless about the future of things.

I do dream about the unification of the whole world in one big country, but cultures and beliefs must be kept. People moving around. Is not natural selection, is the will of the few that keep one part of the world happy, and don't care about the other.

You cannot say that indians or sri lankans are dumber than white people. You can't. Most of us know one thing good, we are experts in living, in loving, in helping out with money, in doing a job. But for anything else leave that to the experts in that field. There are indians much smarter than some white people that never get the chance because they live in a thirld world (or second) country. Americans tend to give a chance, BUT only if that person becomes american. Someday all those who oppose diffrence will pay, since we need all to be together to survive. There are so many problems in the world that even if all people would be happy, would have everything, you might still bump your head to a invisible rock.

All I hope is that people feel so sory for the affected that they give half their hearts to them. And with it goes the other hope that those affected appreciate what is being done for them and give half their hearts back. Not all, perhaps not most of the people, but if only a few then there it is.

I would like to be there and help out, but unfortunately, I cannot since I am a dumb poor moneyless student. I can't even donate. I only hope that less people die from diseases and hunger and thirst.

Canada gave out 1 million dollars. Soooo much. Sri Lanka can use it to buy a toothpick. Why? Because is almost none at all. Billions of dollars needed, not a million. They don't want to bother themselves with dying people, let them die anyway, since they are poor and dumb :'( Its about everybody, no only sri lanka. Is more than that. Is also how dumb sri lankans to fight between themselves.

In the end we all are people, we all deserve to live, and we are kept alive by the suffering of someone else. We need to learn to suffer for the happiness of others. People make mistakes, and both sides of the equatin ballance out with a constant called stupidity and confort (who want to bother?). Borth can be treated with propper education, and a bit of respect.

[edit] You know what's funny? That west parties and has fun, they go about and celebrate christmas, buy many presents, dance about the tree, tell snow and sady claws stories in the richest part of the world. Then, next day, many people die in the poorest part of the world. That is funny  :'(

Well, this tragedy will take its toll in all parts of the world, including the "western" one. Even our little country reports as much as 300 missing tourists at the moment... :-(

Haddas

Woah, Kenya?  That's really far away from the others! Just saw on the news where a surviving Finnish family said it looked like a hand grasping for them... approaching them at 800 km/h There's no time to run. It is truly saddening what has happened.

Las Naranjas

I'm trying, but I can't find in Timosity's post anything disparaging towards people in the region, unless you misinterpret that natural selection remark.

anyway, the Commonwealth government has given $35 million as yet, which is probably how much the respective state governments will be spending on fireworks tomorrow night.

I wan't being bleak about the whole thing, just stating the realities living on this planet.

people will help, life will go on as normal (given time), people will be remembered, people will be forgotten.

It will happen again and the cycle will continue. (whether it be 6 weeks or 6 million years)

I noticed another thread about some asteroid or something, that's another thing that happens that could wipe out life as we know on this planet, and has happened before wiping out whole species.

and what I mean by natural selection is, random events happen on this earth, people, animals etc are in different places at different times, certain events may happen, people will live, people will die and it shapes the way of the future.

Ever heard that saying 'shit happens'  it's just a summary of the meaning of life (and the shit that happens isn't always bad)

the most annoying thing I've seen since, on tv was an American show ET

the headline story was 'supermodel survives tsunami'

of all the stories to sensationalise in that way, when so many people have been killed, it was just completely irresponsible (they even briefly mentioned that her boyfriend had been swept away and was missing, but she was ok so it's alright) I supose you've gotta expect it from a show like that

Andail

Creepy...Sweden is the tourist nation that was hit the worse...we still have 1500 people missing down there.
Almost everybody here knows about someone who knows someone who was there when it happened.

12431

More than a thousand norwegians are missing too. A friend of mine and his family was in Phuket when the waves came, but they're okay now.
Albert Barillé and Hergé, we love you

My girlfriend went there ... vacations. I don`t know anything about her, only she was seen walking near her house ... i`m praying god to help her ... and i already send money there.
waiting for the AG of the century .....

My uncle, his whife, their oldes son (my cousin), his whife and  two kids and her parents where in thailand duing this catastrophy, mut all of them are all right (they where too greedy to stay att the expensive sea-view hotles, and instead lived at higher grounds) But lots of people are missing, a girl at my work is gone, probably dead, and a neighbour family, living half a block from me is probably missing too, since another neighbour thinks that they are somewhere in thailand...

fanton

listen the tsunami is bad. really bad. i mean, is beyond anything i have ever heard. probably simmilar things happened in the past.

no animals died? isn't that interesting? animals did not forget earth, they still sense danger. we, on the other hand, forgot about how big the universe is.

some island was moved some tens of meters because of the earthquake.

the earth is spinning a bit faster now. some asked for the day to be shorter by half a second or something like that.

the inclinations changed. now a couple of miliseconds of degrees off.

about 150 thousand people died.
about 5 need assistance fast and injured.
about  2 million are injured.
about 1 million have nothing.

10,000 people died in one day in a village in thailand i think.

i don't know if i have to cry, feel sad, or i don't know. i feel ok now, cause we have no problems here in canada. the perfect place, right?

see, those people. poorly educated. dumb. dirty. at least a couple. but they are people. and if they would have had the chance, they would be equal, perhaps better than us having fun here in canada.

they gathered about 500 million dollars. i think. where 250 is from private donnations only. the wolrd bank is giving out a little bit. big companies like pepsi, cola, etc, are giving out about 60. people try to help.

but is not that. there are no villages left. 80% of the cities are RAZED to the ground. let's say it would help people. then, mister Magundi Mihimala goes to live under the rubble, with his head on a rock. there is nothing left. people have no jobs, no food, no police, no nothing. not only that but people are people, they steal, they kill, they lie and cheat, they cry, they feel abandoned, sad, commit suicide, go crazy. so where to go? they give food and they go? that's it. the GREAT relief. OMGZOR!!! west pawnzor ownzor the east. now they have to rebuild. yes. rebuild everything. but not only that. make their life better.

its like god has changed his mind and kicked some arses, for the fun of it all. and he's laughing out there.

and some countries give nothing. some dont care. they will be alone, in the end.
