Right, when I start AGS, all I get is this error message:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We're sorry, the AGS editor has encountered a serious error and must shut down. You will have lost any changes made since you last saved your game.

(Exception 0xC0000005 at EIP=0x0046B22A, AGSE v2.61.490)

Please note down the numbers above, and what you were doing when this error occured. If it happens repeatedly, please inform CJ of this error by visiting the AGS Technical forum and providing any information that you can.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's happened before, and "reinstalling" (removing and then unzipping again :P) AGS helped, but it's started again just now, and continues after both reinstalling and rebooting my coputer. I also downloaded the newest version of AGS afterwards, incase I didn't have the latest updates, but still got the same error.

I have a strange feeling this has something to do with my computer rather than AGS, but I thought I'd better check. This day isn't going too well. :\

Try installing it to C:\AGS folder, does it help?

Ok, I'll try it in C:\AGS.
edit:
Still displays the same message :\. If it's any help, I tried it in D:\AGS too, because I use D: for most programs. Same result.

When does the message appear? Do you get the splash screen, or does it crash before that? Does it make it to the "Welcome to AGS" dialog?

Can you try removing all plugins from your editor folder temporarily and see if that helps.

It crashes before anything appears, no splash screen.
And, I have no plugins right now, didn't have any before either.
Thanks, though :)
Btw, the last time it happened aswell as this time, other things started working wrong like Windows Media Player, cookies, etc, so I'm guessing it does have something to do with my computer. Could even be a virus, though Norton doesn't detect anything. I've been needing to reinstall windows and format, so i probably will, as quickly as possible, so that I can continue scripting for the ATC. :)

Do let us know if it still doesn't work after that. If other applications are also going wibbly, I'd imagine it could well be a virus of some sort.

Hi!

I didn't know which was worse, to necropost or to make a new post  on something that had already been discussed.  Sorry if I made the wrong choice.

I just wanted to report that I have almost the same problem, only at a different EIP and with the splash

Description:
When double-clicking the agsedit.exe icon, the splash screen appears and a fraction of an instant later, the IDE appears with a dialogue window on top of it that says:
QuoteWe're sorry, the AGS editor has encountered a serious error and must shut down. You will have lost any changes made since you last saved your game

Exception 0xC0000005 at EIP=0x01741BB8, AGSE v2.62.509

The splash screen remains. In fact I can see it in the middle of the screen as I type this.
When I click on the "x" on the error dialogue, the IDE and the slash screen close.

Troubleshooting:
Re-installed and retried
deleted and reinstalled and retried
reinstalled on c:\AGS\ and retried
reinstalled on d:\AGS\ and retried
switched resolution to 1024*768*32
switched resolution to 1024*768*16
switched resolution to 800*600*32

they all gave the same result, with occational changes in the last three digits of the EIP
no plugins installed ever.

Oh, two more things.
I just tried the beta and got the exact same error except that now the last 6 digits of the EIP change (and the agsedit version, of course)

and the other is that I didn't know that my email address would be printed into the html of the page. yikes! If someone could please remove it or change the @ to an [at] before a spambot gets it, I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much!

Pumaman

Ok, I've edited your post to remove the e-mail address. In future, just stick any old junk in teh e-mail field if you're posting as a guest.

As for the crash, can you try this special build of the editor:
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/agsedit.zip

The crash window should then display an extra number which should allow me to track down where the problem is happening.

Booboo

:D ;D :DDDDDDDD

I do not see the extra number... because with this agsedit, it doesn't crash!!!!
YEY!
Thanks!!!!

With 2.62, it says that it can't find several xpm  files(prop, roprop, method, gvar, enum, statprop, statmeth, struct) so I assume it's for the beta (although after saying that it misses those files, it does load without crashing!). With the beta, it loads without an error! Oh, duh! just saw the about box! ^^;; The splash screen went so fast that I didn't see it this time!

Pumaman

That's bizarre, I hadn't done any fixes to stop it crashing; so I'm still concerned about the problem.

Anyway, yes the new editor is a version of the beta; it will shortly be obsoleted by beta 12.

Booboo

I've been reading into the forum and found another post with this error that fixed it by re-installing sp2

I thought it was worth a shot so I re-installed it and it didn't do squat. The next logical step was re-installing windows and then sp2. Did that and still no change. The packaged exes gave the error message and the new one worked fine.

So I tried the only possible next step to see if it fixed it. So I repartitioned and reformatted the system drive and re-installed everything.

Luckily, it did seem to fix the problem this time. The three executables are working now.
So it must have been something on my end... sorry.

Pumaman

Blimey, re-installing windows is quite a length to go to to get AGS working, but glad it did the trick.
