Is the World Map ever going to be revived?

It's 'temporarily' offline for a long time now...

It had to be taken offline because it was chewing up lots and lots of server CPU due to its realtime image generation. When I get some time I need to rewrite it to pre-generate the images and then just link to them at runtime.

For obvious reasons it's not exactly my highest priority thing to fix.

To be honest, the map sucked

even zooming in on the uk, you couldn't read any of the names

You could get an Ordnance Survey map of the Universe and let us zoom in to our exact location to add ourselves...

That number could be slimmed down, with just a little bit of heavy ordinance.

I mean, you already effectively have their addresses.

Is there too much information about users? If it's not, there could just be a java applet that loads the world image and the location information about users and once it's running in the client machine (not the server), he/she could navigate the map in all directions and zoom up and down at pleasure.
I could do it if I knew a little more about java applets, but I'm sure there already are many agsers that can and will be honoured to do it.

Not really, only the forum nicks were displayed, the problem was some of nicks were quite long (well, if you consider 10 characters as long...) and got truncated, andit didn't get very good zooming, so lots of the flags and names overlapped, rendering the maps unreadible.

Excellent idea, Kairus. If everything is vector-based, the file size could be very small.
I would rather have a Flash applet if possible.

the map well never saw the map cant reply much to this...
But id go with java just because its designed to be web based flash is very sluggish to start up and then it only worx after the huge file download ... think about it java beta!

ok but seriously someone will have to do that i think a map is awesome! It was a good idea i think ill put one on my site. Cmon guys everybody always waits for pumaman to do everything... that sux lets pull together and help him out atleast! Hes done so much for us already!
