I drew the canyon, sun etc. Completely with gradients from flash MX

but the sign still bugs me, tell me what you think.

Etcher Squared Games

Hello TheBrat499,

This is my first time giving feed back on C&C, so just know I mean everything I say positively and no insult intended...

cool? cool..

ok, first the sign, as compared to the trail, the sign is facing the wrong way.Ã,  Or is the sign not meant for people on the trail.Ã,  If it's a warning about "There be trail here" then you're ok.

Otherwise the far right hill is shadowed when it seems to me that it should be lit with it facing the sun.Ã,  I would think the right side of the left hill should be shadowed.

The sun isn't perfectly sphere..Ã,  :-\

The first impression I got from this scene was it made me a little dizzy.Ã,  I don't know, maybe it's just late for me and my eyes are tired.

Anyway, you probably hate me enough as it is so I'll stop here.
Definatly 1000000000000x better than anything I could do.Ã,  Ã,  ;D

good luck!

1. Thanks for the great feedback
2. You could still probaly draw better then me
3. HATE,HATE!, that was great, i do not hate you in any way!

heres some more pics

1. this has the lighting that worm III sugessted and my new road.

2.same as the first but with different road idea.

Abisso

Brat, tell me: where do that road lead? Is it a crevice? I really find difficult to understand this image, cause the ground seems to be flat and stop abruptly, and the sun is sooo big!
Welcome back to the age of the great guilds.

=The=Brat=

I Know, its not supposed to make any sense. its just a wierd peice of imagination that appeared in the middle of the holidays.

Ali

If you make the sun a flat bright yellow, and make the sky brighter nearer the sun rather than darker it could look quite nice.

I would suggest, though, that the sky is the only part of this image that should have a gradient. Outlines can look very nice in vectors - try working with them.

=The=Brat=

Do you mean like this

monkey0506

LOL OMG put it back!  ;D  Personally I think it was starting to look nice.  It could even make for very decent graphics if you could keep a consistent style.

Edit:  Btw, the one with the lines on the road.  Nice. :=

monkey0506

Seriously, this could become your style.  It's unique (which is a good thing) and if you can make more stuff like this, then it would look nice together.

Minimi

euhm... dude this is criticslounge, dont post a topic if you have just put some squares and rounds up with lousy gradients.

Don't want to be mean, but you could spent much more effort to it before posting!

=The=Brat=

err............. im not sure how to take that

anyway, i had another go in this style,

WARNING: if the last one hurts ur eyes than u better watch out!

I would advise against using gradients unless there really is a place for them.Ã,  It seems to be more of a fast way to shade things, at the expense of great inaccuracy.Ã,  I think that the best way to use computer generated gradients is when shading very shiny objects, usually metal, such as pipes and chrome.Ã,  In my opinion, anything else though looks out of place, whatever the style.

This is a good resource for metallic shading, I don't know if you'll find it useful for anything:
http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/farp/metal2/Reflective0.htm

In the image above, there are many gradients, most of them circular, and yet it is very difficult to have a situation in which there is a completely circular gradient, and least in that strength.Ã,  If you really like to shade with CG gradients, my best advice is to keep the colour gap low on dull surfaces, and use linear shading in most cases, ensuring a consistent light source too.

This image could look really nice with some careful shading, I think either gradients or cel-shading would work well with this style of background.Ã,  Here are a few types of shading you could use on the pavement, but for anything else too:

Notice I also fixed up the perspective a bit on a few things in orange lines.Ã,  I think this is how it should look, since vanishing point(s) are towards the left (?).Ã,  The lines on the road should parallel the other diagonals, and should probably be closer to the centre of the road.Ã,  Some things might be inaccurate, it was a very quick edit.

Since glass is quite transparent, you should be able to see some of the building's interior, although lighter and perhaps slightly bluish since it is seen through the glass.

I know I've been really, really critical about this background and I shouldn't, it's great work, and I'm no expert.Ã,  I hope at least though that some of it has been useful, and I haven't made too many mistakes :)

Ishmael

I mean not to offend you, but your style seems to lack depth almost completely... I'd even dare to claim that you have not refined the backgrounds yourself enough before posting, as I trust that you can do a lot better. You're maybe posting too quickly, or you're starting your work on a background from halfway to done, as in, you have an idea in your head, and you just lay all the elements of the idea into the picture. When doing this, you easily lose the perspective and depth from the picture. Get started with perspective lines, some simple larger objects, and so on...

For example, some steps of one of my recent backgrounds developpment:
http://koti.mbnet.fi/tk-/img/Kellari1a.gif I drew this using perspective lines, then erasing them as the room was in place (done in Paint)
http://koti.mbnet.fi/tk-/img/Kellari1c.gif Paintover in Photoshop. Some things, like the big plate in the corner, were out of perspective or the wrong size, so I fixed them.
http://koti.mbnet.fi/tk-/img/Kellari1d.gif I showed the background to some people and made changes according to their suggestions.
It'd be ready for CL, apart from that I'm quite happy with it right now.
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

<Calin> Ishmael looks awesome all the time

Nethros

It's great, much better than how I draw, forgive me if this doesn't be exact, but shouldn't the shadow be more of the ground color just a bit darker? Again, sorry if it isn't true.

Also, The sun in the first picture looks like it bounces on the mountain. ;D But you fixed that I see.

Again, much better than how I draw, Keep up the good work

It's tooth in Afrikaans too ;D

CoffeeBob

Gradients can look nice if used right. This one does not count, though. You've used them too much. If you would add more depth and perspective, your style would look really nice.
