buloght, that pic of gawain is perfect!

i think the facial expression is perfect, since if you the effort to actually go look at the original painting, you'dd see why he is scared.

i also think his face and "pauldron" is exactly right. it seems to me ure not going for realism here. more a stylistic approach. and i think u did it perfectly. the wider face and shoulders give them more power. its like the warhammer people do it with the armour.

personally, i think sir gawain is the best of the 3 sprites. awesome. oh, and remember to add an ear.  ;D

It's great to see some sprite versions of cg characters! Good to see AGSers showcase strong designs on other forums.

Some brief criticism of the Sir Gawain sprite: he could use some darker outlines or shades... Right now he looks a bit flat and faded throughout.

I checked the link on Gawain and it took me to a really cool judgement painting, and after searching for awhile I only found one gawain painting (and it didn't match) so I decided to do a paintover to show you what I am talking about.

I didn't spend alot of time on this since I'm not sure if you will find these adjustments useful or not.

1.  I made the outlines darker to emphasize the character's form and features.
2.  Adjusted shading on a few areas to give you some ideas.
3.  Redrew the face with fleshtones that have greater contrast.  I also moved his nose because the previous position just looked off center with his hairline to me.  Also gave him an ear :).
4.  Moved the pauldron inward and reduced size somewhat.

In addition, I noticed quite a few colors that were so similar that I could barely notice them.

I hope you find some of this useful.

thanks for paintover progz. Your face and hair are awesome.

thanks bb, i was working on a paintover with darker lines after i saw your post.

I updated the link, don't know how i got it wrong, but i remember looking at the judgement painting.

There is unfortunately only one sir gawain painting and i feel a little offended that you said it doesn't match.

I'll respond later with more details on the knights ... on all the replies.

I see what you mean with the darker outlines, bb. Mine looks way too faded. I'll change that.

igor: thanks, he's my favourite too :)

ikari: you're right, he does look scared, i'll change his eyebrows. The stance is supposed to be a salute o some sort :)

nihilyst: Yes, i suck at colour choosing, i wanted to make him bright though since he had a glowiness to him in painting (sort of good-vs-evil thing i guess)

progzmax: your paintover is very good, but he looks old and weak now. I intentionally made him wide : for power. And if you look where his neck is you'll see he that his shoulder doesn't look dislocated. The problem with yours is that he looks to cramped.
Your colour choice is brilliant, i'll definitely learn from that. I am very new to sprite colouring and drawing (about a month or so) so i thought the idea was the choose colours close to each other. I'll try a paintover with your colours and the darker outlines like bb said. The beard i made dark cause i didn't want it to look like a full beard. I'll make it lighter.

What I was talking about (in reference to the gawain image) was that the pose and hairstyle wasn't like the original (he doesn't have a visible face and sports a long ponytail) so I was unable to use it as a  reference to judge certain aspects of your version in terms of faithfulness.  His face could certainly look anyway you want since you never see it- angry, determined, tired...So as far as that goes it's up to what you prefer.  I think one of the main reasons the placement of the shoulder in my version looks cramped (a good observation on your part) is due to the pose itself, which Ikari mentioned is a bit 'weird'.  Not wrong exactly, but not like he's in a situation where his life is endangered.  I hope that clears up any ambiguities so that you do not feel insulted, as that was the furthest thing from my mind.

i also think maybe you thought the shoulder was too wide is because it wasn't round enough. I made a paintover to fix the lines and did my own colour rebalance with your guidance. And i made the shoulders rounder so it may look less awkward. But i like the stance since a sort of salute before battle. I kept the width as it is, since i like the power generated (warcraft, warhammer)

thanks for your help prog.
