Anyway, the mouse over thing never worked for me either

As pointed out above, the mouseover only works in internet explorer (because its behavior is not HTML-compliant but relies on a discrepancy only existent in IE... )  It would be trivial (and appreciated) for the webmaster to fix that.

Well if you use a cool browser like Opera, you can disable images with just a key press thus revealing the "alt" text though.

Anyway, I wouldn't do changing the original pictures. At least roger must be left there. That's my opinion... and what one could do is to put the word language, sex, violence, anything next to the picture to make it clearer...

If you need to put the word by the icon (or in the icon), the icon has failed. At that point, you are admitting the icon is nonsensical and you might as well omit it.

How about this? Do you think this is clear? I used a handgun instead of a knife, because while a knife can be used for many things, handguns were designed to kill people. I used the yellow background because the icons are advisories, or warnings.

I think the circle symbols communicate the "sex" aspect, but I'm not sure about nudity. A fig leaf would look too much like "drugs"...

The symbols don't immediately convey sex(ual intercourse & nudity) to me as well as the other icons immediately convey their own meanings.

I don't really care if the graphics are changed, but I think its a bit sad that everyone jumps to a conclusion that people won't understand his images, even though they have ALT tags and usually descriptive and obvious text beside them that explain what they are. Strazer did the best job here, IMO.

I invented the content advisor & so far it's done a perfectly good job. As Tuomas says, removing Roger for some slightly more descriptive pics would be a shame. It's only the violence icon that's slightly confusing, why can't that one just be slightly modified?

The Kappa girl is an improvement, but again - what if it's all about gay sex?

Just because one person complained about it doesn't mean that only one person had trouble understanding them. Once again, if you NEED the ALT tags, the icons have FAILED in their purpose (pictoral communication)!

Think about this: many games have more than just an English translation available. We can't assume that everyone speaks English, or else we would of simply replaced the icons with the labels VIOLENCE, SEX/NUDITY, LANGUAGE, since that way it leaves less room for error. But we did not do that.

If we plan to have icons, we need them to be clear and easy to understand without any text around them.

As for gay sex, the point of an icon is to quickly give the viewer information, not to describe all aspects possible for the topic it describes.

BTW, the girl can be commonly seen on big rig mudflaps.

I do quite like your latest icons big brother, they get the point across whilst still being moderately sized. It would be a shame to lose the AGS-ifiedness of Roger though

Roger will need animations to support the message. Roger himself has nothing to do with any of those. For static sprites, those work nicely.

To keep the AGSishness just use the blue cup and roger color scheme's.  We could also make larger versions of the sprites and use them for inventory or other objects in the demo game?

I like the yellow and black color scheme because of the "warning" connotations, but if we want to keep the AGS look, we could always make them blue on white.

The integration idea is interesting, too. Kind of a backwards way of making them part of AGS.
