He didn't compare the two. If someone would say, "I'd like to see more heavy metal and indie rock in ESC", it doesn't mean he's comparing them. The Lordi dude is just saying that he would like more genres to be included in the incredibly homogeneous ESC, and he mentions those two probably because those are the two genres he likes or is involved with the most. The genres are quite irrelevent.

Don't you think it would be better if people included more niche genres to ESC and if the competition was actually all about the music? Not to say I care about the competition, but bringing in diversity is irrefutably a good thing and it would inherently make the competition more credible.

Oneway

hahaha, right on! Congrats to Lordi and the Fins for finally winning one..
I laughed my arse off when i found that Lordi made it to the finals and Holland didn't.

Then i laughed even harder when i flicked through the channels and saw them performing their song after winning.
About five seconds after that i almost died as i envisioned orthodox chrisitians around Europe trembling in fear and expecting the apocalypse when they saw these servants of satan winning such a prestigious (WHAHAHA) contest.

But in all honesty, i wasn't really that impressed with the song itself. It reminded me of late 70's early 80's Dio and Black Sabbath music. With costumes like that i had expected some gruesome death metal band who's music even i couldn't stomach.

Still, a nice turn of events when finally a non-conformist act goes home with all the glory.
Almost intentionally left blank.

No actually I don't believe there's any redeeming quality in a musical competition of any type.

For once, a eurovision song worth buying. Thats a great start. Well done Finland!

I hope next year more metal acts will arise in the eurovision.
Once again, us UK dwellers pick a shit song by some 40 year old rapper. How desperate!
I don't know why the UK bothers to enter the eurovision coz we haven't enough allies or neighbouring countries to rely on. If only we could enter as England rather than United Kingdom.

Correct me if I'm wrong but no one in this thread seems to have mentioned LITHUANIA yet.

I just wanna know where that awful dancing came from by that bald bloke! No wonder they were booed.

I think they were booed because of the whole "we are the winners of eurovision" bit :P

LimpingFish

Yes, their subliminal message obviously didn't work. Maybe it was too subtle.

I liked Croatia's entry. Only because it showed that a leaked home-made porno can't keep you out of the Eurovision.

That was one of my favourites :) And the bald guy reminds me of a former president of Finland (image). They should've won ::)

Kekkonen set aside, I hated the Lithuanian entry. It was funny as a novelty act for some 10 seconds, after which it was totally boring, awkward and stupid.

To "finnish" ( ;D) with this. Eurovision sucks. I would never trust in this contest again, since Greek's Sakapó did not win.

And Andorra sucks. I bet we were going to get less than 10 points, and with his "12", Spain reached 18. I am thinking in sending Squinky's female-bright-stickered-helmet clones to kill them all.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Frankly, in my opinion this years ESC had more quality songs than usually. I actually enjoyed watching it, and I did find something good in each song. I was really surprised, though I've never followed it so closely as this time, probably because of Lordi entering.

I have no idea what that means, but the Greek entry sucked, I ranked it to be second last, ie 23rd, just before Malta ;)

Mr. Lordi himself takes influences from bands such as Kiss and Alice Cooper... did I already say this... Well, that's the reason. It's all intentional. And I think the costume thing was a good idea. You know, the band has been up for at least 14 years now, they made their first record in 02.

Yeah, well the song was funny for like 30 seconds. And they never got as many boos as Silvia Knight from Iceland... I kind of liked this song though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwGkmNWR8-4&search=silvia%20night . She calls to God in that ... I quote the lyrics: (phone - conversation)
Hello is it god?
What’s up dog?
It’s your favourite person in the world Silvia Night
I’m saving the world
See you...bye

They say she said something bad about the Greeks, and that's why got the boos, I think there's some videop of her freaking out there too... What is it with women from iceland? I just love them.

I agree. And having every band performing heavy Rock, I'd kill myself. I had this gig on saturday, it was an outside consert for local bands... I wasn't local but my brother was. Anyway, it was a several hour's consert with us the only band of the 20 that did not play Heavy Metal, we actually played jazz and a bit swing... I can't even imagine what the heavy-people were thinking at that time ;D Anyway, Heavy... eh... wouldn't make a good entry. I bet from no on, no Heavy song will win, should there ever be one.

Yes, this song, I enjoyed it too, but only once, when I heard the rerun, I hated it, mostly because of the yakatakatakatai yakaktaka. Like a machine gun if you ask me :)

Did I mention I really liked the chorus in the UK song?

Ahaha. Not.

QuoteEurovision sucks.

That's right, and it always has.

QuoteI would never trust in this contest again

Wait, what, you mean you had faith in the artistic essence of the Eurovision SugarPopContest? Man, I feel sorry for you...

Quotesince Greek's Sakapó did not win.

Indeed! It totally broke with Eurovision tradition to NOT let one of the crappiest songs win!
Still here.

m0ds

Well done Finland! Metal definitely deserved to win. I didn't watch it but I heard about it. And I heard "Greece" wants to get Lordi banned. Great stuff :D

Haddas

I wonder if this will become a tradition? Everytime someone has a huge victory people want them banned.

Nacho

Toumas, Sakapó was a HORRIBLE greek song with a horrible choreagraphy and extremelly lame suits. I tried to post a link when I wrote the post, but couldn't find one.

Which basically means... I was joking.

I'll send GWAR to Greece then. They'll LOVE them.

But Greece actually gave the full mark to Finland ???

ManicMatt

Yeah, the half of Greece that didn't participate in the voting is complaining. Probably.

dsg_charly

I voted Finland, and, in a certain way, I won.  ;D

It was my first Eurovision, only to watch Lordi performance. They were good, but a darkest song would have been much appreciated.

Regarding the other countries, except of Bosnia which gave me a good laugh, to my mind, everything was more or less shit. I thought:
"But how that crap can be the representation of the european music  ??? ??? ??? Is this the better we can get  ??? ??? ???"

Well, no, that's definately not the best we can get. Like I said, nobody is trying to make a good song. Everyone is trying to make a simple, catchy tune thingy along with an impressive show and/or fancy costumes, because that's what most people like and it's what has more chances of winning.

And like I said, the song during the opening ceremony was much better than any of the songs of the competition. It wasn't repetitive, it was dramatic and progressive. I didn't hear it carefully though, because I wasn't paying attention except the final 30 seconds or something. But my point is, people can write so much better music than the Eurovision songs, they're just more interested in victory than in writing a good song.

Mathan

Yay, we're the best.  ;) Did we win by skill, or was everyone just bored of that crap with women with not much clothes on? And that pop...

Well, I've seen many people who believe so. Guess they're correct.
