I'm mostly concerned with the arms. They don't look very natural, and I'm not sure how to correct that.

Um forgive me but, his head is as large as the rest of his body, and you think his arms look unnatural?

They look good from where I'm sitting, then again his arms are behind his back so it's hard to tell how long you have them and what not.

But seriously, I more meant the position of the arms being not very comfortable and natural for the character. Not so much concerned with realism, because as you pointed out, it's already very unrealistic. So that's a given.

That looks great! But I have a suggestion for the arms. Maybe have him holding the straps of the backpack, like this:

A suggestion straight from the early nineties! Looks really good and designy. I would personally come up with a better color combination for the shirt/shorts/shoestripes, add shading to the head and perhaps add something to the forehead.

some crits I've heard already (good ol' wife!): arms look thinner and longer in the side view, the wrist to hand is longer than the front view

Well he's not standing 100% perfectly straight like a plank of wood. He's a bit relaxed, so he's slightly leaning to one side. That's why the one arm is (1 pixel) longer than the other.

update:

tweaked colors, fixed/changed side view, working on 3/4 view now.

Id have to say the hair colour of D & E but the freckles of F, they clear some of the vast empty spaces of his face.

I like A & F as well, although I suggest toning down the red of the freckles in F just a tad. (nice sprite, by the way ^_^)
