Running DiscNoir under XP

That's right - I want to run the 'old' Adventure DiscNoir under Windows XP. I used to love this game, but sadly, I never completed it because the CounterStrike-phase kicked in. And after I tried to get it to run today, it didn't want to.

So, do you see any way to get it running (except format c: and installing Win 98)?

Would dosbox work? Or is that too old an emulation?

And what about that windows emulation thingy in properties for the game, somewhere? You tried that?

There seems to be some kind of a fix on the HOTU Discworld Noir page that replaces the game executable so it may help you. It's near the bottom of the page, see "Technical Notes".

Also, you could try right clicking on the game's exe and choosing "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 95" in the "Compatibility" tab.

I think this game is for windows, so DosBox wouldn't be of much use.

Umm, at least on my Win XP, DWNoir works perfectly well. I installed it like a year ago, so I'm not sure if I used some fix or not.

Might have been a re-release, i know they did winxp versions of STS and Monkey Island.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try that fix thing, although I doubt it'll work - its about a "notebook error", and I can't even start the game.

I tried the compatibility mode, but that doesn't work. Neither 95 nor 98 works - it's the same result: Loading splash screen, then desktop.

Yeah, Discworld Noir is a wellknown bastard when it comes to running it under XP. Had exactly the same problem myself.
Took me quite while to find the solution, but in the end, what Damien mentions did the trick.
Replace the "tin3_dxd.exe"-file that you get when you install the game with the fixed version from the underdogs. That should do it. Unfortunately, this gives you another bug, which is the fact that you can't load your saved games from the game's main menu, so you have to skip through the intro scenes every time you start up the game, and then load it. A bit of a hassle, but worth it, since you get to play a truly great game.

Slightly off-topic, but I remember the game not working on windows 95 (version a). Before I played Discworld Noir I didn't know there were different versions of each edition of windows.

Well, I had some trouble related to the game's copy-protection's incompatibility with WinXP's native CD-burning abilities. Or something.

I didn't know about the underdogs fix - what I did was, I went to P2P and got me a crack. Really, I had to get a crack for a game I already own. Rather pathetic, but it fixed my problems.

Yeah, look for a crack. Behave like a pirate in order to play the game you legitimately obtained. It's what I had to do.
