Ishmael

You really can't do much in a week, with two weeks on your hands you could do a lot more. And if there was a theme this time round what would be the point of telling it forehand? Part of the excitement is in awaiting for the OROW thread to see inside for what wacky guidelines show up. IIRC the reply to all theme questions last time was "we'll see", and when the day came we saw no theme. Was sort of a step back too, since I hadn't done any thinking in case there was no theme. It's part of the excitement, stop poking around it.
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

I'd like a theme, but a fairly general one, so that you don't get the situation that all games are pretty much the same. Just make it so that there's a general theme, which gives people something to start with, or maybe a couple of example themes (which, while not technically being guidelines, will still (possibly) inspire people to do them anyway) and then let them do whatever with it.

I'd be against MAGS-like guidelines, like "Make a pirate game with the following inventory items: a wad of spit, a monkey, a monocle and a spade", because that'd be limiting rather than facilitating.

I have no preference as to when it would be, as long as I get to know when it starts ;)
Still here.

I would like there to be something tying the games together somehow, but I also see OROW as a time to make whatever silly game idea you had but didn't want to spend ages making, so it could restrict some things. So I am undecided about themes at the moment.

Ok, so we'll have it in January, 7-13?

voh

Theme examples would be a good middle road - basically saying 'here's some things you could possibly do, but feel free to deviate from them if you've got a better idea'.

7-13 sounds fine to me :)
Still here.

You want it to be like MAGS?....

"Here's 10 inventory items. You may use them... or not. It doesn't matter. It can take place at christmas, unless you don't want to."

LimpingFish

After careful (minimal) consideration, I believe I would rather not have a theme. I would not, however, be against an actual enforcing of the cardinal OROW rule. That any game submitted should INDEED take place in a single location.

Other than that...

And I just want to bring up that OROW was created to get people to make games that are interesting and don't get over-scoped

the OR bit was to try and curtail people's over-scopeness. I like OROW being of few rules. If you made a game in a week, awesome! Post it and let me play it! I'd also love to do away with the whole competition aspect of OROW because, eh.

BUT THAT'S JUST ME!

So that's a no ;)

LimpingFish: But it's called One Room, One Week for a reason. What do you want, then? As Many Rooms As You Want, One Week? (AMRASYWOW sounds kind of crappy)
Still here.

scotch

I don't think we'd bring back the one location rule, people seem to have a good idea of what is possible in an OROW game now, it worked ok last time.

Scotch: Yeah, but then it's not really an OROW game then, is it? :P

Didn't we have this discussion last time? No it's not really... but we can pretend.

So I'm blind and read so incredibly selectively that I'm attributing opinions to you that are far from yours. What's your point? ;)

A similar guideline to this could do the trick.

Imagine a day in the life of a poor private investigator (on another seeming break).

Or a day in a life of an investigator that belongs to a higher organistion that we explain in the guidelines.

Ockey, don't have to be an investigator  ;), but any kind of person with something that we choose will conect them.
Think Fahrenheit... or something like that.

I don't think that in any way will the games be too similar, it can only build up the curiosity of what others made from the (suggested) rules.

Actually as voh mentioned, maybe the rules should be just used as an inspiration.
That's why I'm pro guidelines, because they always play with your imagination and can stop those creative blocks you could have with starting a new project.

Scotch, you're right. I'm just being pedantic. You wish to rob me of my pedantic---ness? :'(

7th-13th is fine with me. :)

EDIT: Hey! We could change the name to One Game, One Week! OGOW! Huh? Huh?!

No?...Fine. >:(

People, stop messing with the OROW concept. Just get ready for it. Nobody's going to cry if your game is two rooms or one room. Make a game! Try stuff! Have fun! Suffer the last-two-day-crunch!

Suffering is fun and rewarding! 7th-13th sounds ok to me too.

Seriously, OROW is all about getting some damn games made. It always works, too, so I say leave well enough alone. As far as the competition element goes, I'm kind of with Eric. As long as you're not in it for the sake of WINNING! then it's just a bit of fun, but I'm really more interested in people commenting on each other's work than looking at a set of numbers that's supposed to represent how people evaluated what you did.

I'll echo on 7-13 being good.

(Man, I feel like listening to some George Crumb right now.)
