You say countryside, but,

Go down the mountain like this:

Don't need to go around the rock.

Oh, now I see, thanks.

Ah, at last, I've been able to cast a spell!

It looks like even if you have all the right ingredients, the spell sometimes goes wrong. You just have to keep restoring the game and trying again.

Spoiler
OK, so I have a "transform another into a cat" spell, but always seem to die when I try to cast another spell.

So what can I do with that?

Spoiler
Can you only cast one spell at a time?

Thanks.

Spoiler

I had "understand the language of animals" first

Transform into a cat -> hide in porridge. It is rather obvious where to use it. Get rid of Manannan!

Fly like an eagle (or fly) works in a few places only

Teleport, works everywhere

Sleeping powder, only later in the game, after you have left Llewdor

Storm brew and invisibility, works only at the end of the game, last puzzle

BTW: This remake is very similar to Sierras original gameplay, except for a few details and timers

paolo

Thanks, sthomannch, that is coming in handy.

Spoiler

Now, I have prepared the porridge, but Manannan has decided to go on another of his journeys, and there was a cutscene. Does him getting hungry again depend on me having the porridge ready, or does he just say that randomly? I hope I don't have to potter about the house for ages waiting for him to come back and get hungry.

Thanks.

You cannot influence him, so you have to wait until he comes back from the journey. Could as well be that he wants to sleep afterwards. When I played, I had to give him the mutton chop for dinner, because the porridge was not ready and then I had to do other things until the wizard was hungry again. No problem, but you cannot accelerate anything.

I've got to be honest, I'm findingÃ,  this game incredibly frustrating.

Spoiler
I've been killed like seven times and I just started the game. I can't do anything without the Wizard zapping me. He says I've discovered the secrets of the old magics, but that was never even explained. The generic kill message says I shouldn't let him know what I'm up to, but I fail to see how walking around in the yard should get me killed. As far as I can tell, there's nothing telling me what I should do next. Is the whole game like this? Is it even playable if you don't know the original?

Ivy -

Spoiler
Have you got any inventory items that could be used for magic, or taken anything that belongs to the wizard? eg, fly wings, cat fur, or anything else denoted by a red hotspot in the inventory? If you do and he catches you with them, you will die.

Basic aim so far is to try and create as many spells as you can in order to be free from Manannan. The game is playable, but probably trickier if you haven't played the original as there aren't too many hints and a lot of the game is exploring and picking up stuff.

Spoiler
All I've got is a chicken feather. I can't even get into the house. If the rest of the game is going to be random clicking with no hints as to what comes next, I might just save myself some trouble and stop now. :P

Ivy,

You need to read the manual (Manual.pdf in the game installation). This explains that you get killed if you have magic items on you, how to identify magic items in your inventory, and how to hide them from the wizard.

I know, I kept getting killed for exactly the same reason and couldn't work out why. It was very annoying, but things become a lot clearer once I'd read the manual.

I think this game really should suggest that you read the manual if you answer "no" to the question "Have you played this game before?" that comes up at the start, or say somewhere else in big letters "IMPORTANT: READ THE MANUAL BEFORE STARTING TO PLAY THIS GAME" (like above the download link or something).

Ivy,

To get into the house, use the hand icon on the front door. No doubt you know that already - if you mean you get killed before you can even reach the front door, then you'll just have to use an earlier saved game or start again, and then do what I suggest in my post above. Sorry.

The Ivy

Spoiler
Thanks paolo, I'll check out the manual maybe. I'm still shaking my head that pulling a feather off of a chicken and trying to walk into a house gets me killed in this game, but I suppose it's a Sierra thing. :)

Yes, it's because the chicken feather counts as a magic item. It will make more sense when you read the manual.

Once you know how to avoid getting killed (and there are many other ways you can die or get into trouble in this game with no way of going back other than restoring a saved game, alas) the game becomes more fun. Save early and often!

Athirwen (unplugged)

This may sound stupid, but I'm on the island, I've got the treasure, and I'm trying to climb the mountain. How the hell do I do it? I've got to a boulder which separates two parts of the trail, how do I get past it? I remember the original made you climb it. I've tried everything I can think of and wherever I click, "Gwydion" seems to walk back the other way.

Help!

paolo

Spoiler

Where do I find the stone for the teleportation spell? Do I have to wait until I've got rid of Manannan before I can find it?

The Stone:

[hint]Is there a cave that you have seen somewhere in Llewdor?[/hint]

Still stuck?

[hint]Perhaps you need to get rid of the spider somehow...[/hint]

STILL stuck?

[hint]A spell might do the trick[/hint]

paolo

Thanks. I haven't got that far yet.

By the way, it's [*hide] [*/hide] (without the *s) rather than [hint] [/hint].

I'll just get on with the dusting and chamberpot-emptying for now.

Fantastic, I've just managed to cast a whole load of spells!

Spoiler

I hadn't been to look at the spider's cave. Presumably there are things you need to find out about before you can cast the spells that help you with those things.

Let's hope I can hide them all now before Manannan comes back! :)

Yay, I've got rid of Manannan and I'm away!

Well, I was doing quite nicely until
Spoiler

I tried to cast the teleportation spell. I got killed because I didn't have a spoon. The spoon had swamp mud in it for the storm spell, and after I'd cast that I didn't have a spoon any more.

Does that mean you have to cast the teleportation spell before you collect the swamp mud? I hope not, because I'll have to go back a long way to get back to before I picked up the mud.

Does that also mean that you should only cast spells as and when you need them, rather than just casting them all in one go?

Or perhaps I don't have the right stone. I have the amber stone that the oracle gave me. Is that not the right one?

Thanks.
