Raven Release Thread
I finished the first chapter of Raven! I decided that since it was such a long game I would release it chapter by chapter and release the full game at the end.

  • Verb Pillar interface like in CMI

    Download it Here.

If you want to check up on news for future chapters of raven, look on This Page.

Downloading now. Sounds like an interesting game. Will let you know how it goes. Like the graphics.

This game is very fun, actually.
The dialogue is good, the humour works, the backgrounds look nice for me.
Also, really good voicework. I especially like the witty voice from the Raven.

I didn't play far. For one because I don't have much time at the moment and because the game has still some irritating bugs.
For example the intro dialogue. Nearly every line from this ugly witch (or whatever) is cut off towards the end.
Also, often her talking animation continues endlessly until you press the mouse button. The same is with the shopkeeper.
Some walkbehinds aren't properly set, especially while you are going up the tower. In the middle, while the raven is on the left of it, it can look like he is going through the wall and is partly behind and before the sky.

Also, personally I didn't like this enormously big mouse cursor that appears when you are hovering over an exit.
Another thing that bugged me a bit was that some voices were louder than others.

The basic is right so far. It is very fun. But some polish is missing. :)
Robot Porno,   Uh   Uh!

well the bug with the speech has something to do with the new beta version of ags. I was being stupid and opened raven with it and forgot to make a backup. Thanks for telling me about some of the walk-behind problems I missed for the tower and the cursor being to big. Ill be sure to change these when I release the next chapter.
[edit]
Ok I have found a way to fix the speech cutting of and have fixed the other bugs mentioned as best as I could.

I've been playing Raven for a little while now and like the graphic style very much!  Music is also nice and soothing.  I did encounter a bug in the scene with the dock master where I opened my inventory up and clicked on the roller skates the game then crashed.  I haven't been able to re-create this error, although now every time I try to use items on an object or person the game responds to my action twice over.  Also, sometimes when I try to use an inventory item (like say the potion), the graphic of the item is right but the text will say it's a different item (like roller skates).

Also, is it possible for one to save the game?  Without saving, I now have to start from the beginning after the game crash.  Not that I really made much progress anyways. :)  I think I will be posting in the hint thread cause I can't seem to solve any of the puzzles.

Edit: Figured out how to save...use F1 key.  Would be nice to list alterations from the usual AGS F5 to save and F7 to load.

I may have encountered another bug that is keeping me from continuing the game.  I've outlined the problem in the thread in the hints forum as it may not be a real bug.

I've downloaded this game three times because I love it, but it keeps freezing on me.  The speech is fine  now but I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong to make it freeze  in different spots all the time.

I like the graphics, downloaded and will play soon; but I've been noticing a pattern in all of your games so far- charming graphics mixed with lots of bugs! I like the graphics in this game a lot, but from what the other users are saying, it seems that not much time was put into the quality of the finished game. Do you test your games before releasing them, or at least get beta testers to do it for you?
I'm composing the music for this game:

In past games I have tested them myself which doesn't seem very smart because I seem to miss many things. But for this game I had some of my friends and family play through it and write down the bugs they found. The only real bad bug on this one has something to do with the verb coin module and the inventory that I cannot seem to fix. Other than I don't believe there should be any more.

Well, it's a great pity that none of your beta-testers pointed you towards a dictionary. The game is riddled with spelling mistakes. What on earth is 'footware' or a 'styleist'? Your efforts would be much improved by simply checking your spelling.

Indeed, Joel, you really should harness the free availablilty of beta testers on this board, who will give you all the information you need to make sure these games are worth putting out to the public. It's one extra step and it's still one of the most important, so don't forget it!! :) You are obviously striving for a large audience which is great, but without beta testing it you really are still in the realms of games that should be being distributed between your friends & family only.

I agree with what has been said about spelling. I'm afraid the shaky language has put me off the game a little, but I really love the style - particularly the backgrounds. I'd be very interested in a re-release of this game or further chapters with more careful rpoof-reading.

joelphilippage

Ok. Ill be sure to correct spelling in the next release. Thanks for the feedback.

careful rpoof-reading.

How ironic.

Haven't you heard of R-poof? He's one of your hip-hop/rap musicians. He's great at spotting spelling mistakes, though.

Well, I played the game. I was going to sooner. Anyway, the graphical style of the game seems to be the best asset. The story wasn't much but I  wanted to play more so I could see more of the graphic art. Well I found some bugs. Which is sad. I'm sure you're bored hearing this but you could fix the whole thing and find a better hosting for the file it took me 21 minutes for it. Instead Tale of two kingdoms which is 5 times larger only 10 minutes.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)
