What do you feel about this bg?
It is for a short game set in a lovecraftian dream.

I'm too lazy at the moment to find a good signature.

I think it looks alright. The textures though are either stretched, like the wall. Zoomed in, like the floor. Zoomed out, like the side of the table. And the overall grittery look of the wood makes it look kinda messy.

fouridragon

Love the 3D but the texturing needs work... But ANYTHING 3d I find impressive, simply because it's complicated 2 do.

Bijulinus

Thanks. I know, I'm no good with textures! See you later for next upload  :P

I like this backdrop, but I'm in a hurry. Here are a few very quick thoughts:

Technical points:
The highlights are too blown out, particularly if the light source is a candle.
I think the wood texture is too coarse for a desk, it looks more like the kind of texture you'd use for a crate.
The mapping is a problem on the edge of the desk - look into UV mapping or procedural textures to help get around that problem.
The light is white rather than yellow candle light.
Try adding a glow to the candle itself to simulate sub-surface scattering of light .
The texture on the floor is too low-res, it stands out as distinctly pixellated.

Stylistic points:
Instead of a repeating texture on the book, give each a title and distinct bindings - it'll add to the depth of the scene.
The desk feels too empty. Is it a writing desk? We should see an ink well, pens, blotters, rubber stamps, open books, scribbled notes and annotations.
The back wall and surroundings appear to be unlit. Don't use the candle light as your key light, add it as an extra glow. Try moonlight coming in a window or something that will create exciting shadows.

Hope that's not too abrupt!

The first thing I noticed is the busyness of the texture you used for the desk. The candle holder is almost camouflaged in there! I think a more simple one would be good.

* I suggest less repeat on textures, and if possible, map UVWs onto faces, not as box.
* Floot texture should have either more repeat, or higher resolution texture.
* Candle needs a glow or stronger flame. Simply photoshop one over the render.
* Overall, wood texture is too aggressive and grainy, you could try out some other ones aswell.
* I could give more specific points if you told what software you used.
It's all been said, but seconding proves the problem. These are only weak points on your bg!

I like the books, geometry and overall feeling, but get textures right first.

Thanks! Working on it now.

And here it comes:
I've scaled walls texture and changed floor texture;
I've changed the desk texture with another less messy;
I dont know how to change light, so I've made two different changes on the render.

EDIT: I cant post more than one picture in a single post?

Much better now, though you should still hunt for perfect wood texture.
This one doesn't look like one used on furniture, but on crates or barrels.
Nobody builds a desk out of tiny boards! I like desk feet though, you should keep them like they are.

* Logical question: Who lights a candle in so bright room? It kind of kills atmosphere, having so well-lit room.
* If possible in your 3d software, use a bumpmap on the floor. It looks too artificial right now. Even using exact same texture as bumpmap could work wonders.
* Candle looks kind of too small compared to book and table.

And yes, you CAN insert multiple images into one post. Actually, it's often a need when c&c'ing 3d renders and it's preferred to double posting anyway.

The desk is constructed of wood but it doesn't look so. It looks like someone painted wood on there.

You have 3d so it. The wood has these supports on the texture but no geometry to back it up. The wooden doors on the cabinet have handles that look to be geometry but the wooden bits on the bottom aren't modeled.

Now you shouldn't model every single board but give your model some depth.

You mean I should add more geometry to the desk, in order to do not leave "all the work" to textures?

A nice place for hi-res textures... start here.
http://mayang.com/textures/

For a desk, choose simple, plain wood, without visible planks or strong elements like stains, etc.
I used this for my example... look how well it turned out...?

http://mayang.com/textures/perl/preview.pl?image=lightly_cracked_wood_5132620.JPG

Well, to find the truth, I quickly whipped up something similar:
It took only 15 minutes... Pay attention to dark shadows. This is how I imagine candlelit scene...

Also, if you're going to make closeups, bump maps are your best friend! Look how real cracks look at this closeup...

It doesn't matter much on the faraway scene though (except on the floor), as you can see from first image.
Other two textures are from same site, although I picked them randomly.

Hope this helps somehow.

Yep, shadows like that would be a step in the right direction. I'd even go for less light being cast by a single candle, though.

Quick and dirty render to give you an idea. Being in a corner, you would get some light bounce too.

Drawers!

That's not my verdict of your renders, but a suggestion as to what to include.  All good desks have at least one pair of drawers, and if this is to be used in a game then it would give the player something to look into.

Thanks everybody.
InCreator, that site is very good! The 20 text/day/IP is a limit, but no matter :)
I'm now trying other textures, but...
about the light, you put more light sources? It looks difficoult :S

@LimpingFish: in the room there's another candle, not seen.

@Stupot: Yes... there's a container on the table! ::)
