grydwrd how to do the garden correctly is on page 3 reply #52.
Well, of course I read that, but the explanation was seriously flawed.
Spoiler
(1) "go straight to the tree ..." one can't go straight snywhere in the garden, and to get to the tree from the beginning requires navigating practically the entire maze. (2) "take key" why not get the key first? and open the door as well? (3) "got to the barn, take crank, go to the door ..." what about using the crank to turn off the fountain? (4) " ... and pass under the spider web" but that's half the garden away!

so that's why I asked the question. I don't think the patch helped at all.

After you have explored the garden and know which maze to take to get to the tree of course you need to do that is there is no other way. Then you continue to the tree etc., it may make more sense to go get the key and handle first but that is not the sequence that the game maker wanted, so in order to get pass the web that is the way you need to do it. I hope this explanation helps.  :)

grydwrd

The problem presented by the designer is made clear by the comment when first seeing the web:
Spoiler
"How long have they been making this weB? Maybe if I had gotten here sooner ..."

which means
Spoiler
get from the beginning of the garden to the web as quickly as possible so that when you tget there the web is small enough to get under.

I don't thnk this sort of design is very "adventurer friendly." That's two major flaws (the other being "dead man walking") in an otherwise awesome game.

Congratulations!  From some of the comments I was beginning to think I might have made the game too difficult, but obviously not.

For those of you still struggling on Chapter 3, I'll try to make a few things clear.  The patch that gives you more time to complete the chapter only works if you re-play the game from the last save in Chapter 2.  This is because the game sets the timer for Chapter 3 before saving the start of the chapter, so if you load a previously saved version it will still have the old timer setting.
Spoiler

At the beginning of the chapter the web is small and the timer starts running.  When a certain time has passed, the web begins to grow until it reaches down to the ground.  The secret of success is to get to the web with the handle as quickly as possible.  The reason for following the sequence below is because it is the quickest way to to it.  From the start, walk directly to the Regal Plumnon tree (with purple fruit), eat a fruit, run to the statue and take the key.  Before closing Jack's bundle, take the key and click it on the gate.  Go through the gate and run to the shed to collect the handle (you do not need to use it on the tap - turning off the fountain has no effect on the web) run back to the gate and on to the spider tree.  You should reach it with just enough time for Jack to slip underneath it.

I hope this will help one or two of you.

sthomannch thanks for your help so far but now i am really stuck on chapter 9. ???
Spoiler
I have been walking around in circles in this maze and have not found anything new. I tried making a map of this level but it is hard. I read on one of your spoilers about using the stone helps make you through the maze. I can only toss the stone which rolls a 1,2 or 3 how does this stone help.

What do I have to do to get out of Chapter 4?
Spoiler
Is it some arrangement of the watergates? I don't think I have actually done anything here--haven't found anything or changed anything other than the gates.

Is there something else that needs to be done?

sholson when you enter the castle go straight to where the statue of the man holding the sword is. Turn left, turn left again and follow the path to the room with the fireplace, you will find the lantern there.

Watershed:
Spoiler
You need to arrange the gates that are holding the water in a way that allows you to cross on the stepping stones
[close]

I have been seaching for hours in the desert for these stones.  I saw the hint about looking for it, but still cannot find it.  Can anyone tell me exactly where they are?

Thanks in advance

Leon

These stones are not in the desert. These are the stepping stones of chapter 4.
Spoiler
The stone in the desert can be found when walking straight to the right from the point you entered the chapter. You'll see a statue and a tombstone together with some junk. On the pile of junk is a stone you can take.

Thanks, Leon. I sort of tried that at one point, but I was just not aggressive enough (or brave enough)! Unfortunately, this is another "dead man" situation, and that's just not right.

Me too, except I think my rock is broke!
Spoiler
My stone always rolls a 1 which suggests I should choose door 1. That didn't seem to get me anywhere (well, lots of places, actually, but not out!).

You are getting warmer!
Spoiler
Which door is Door 1?  Think about it, and if you need a little help, go back to the library and read one of the books.  There's also a big clue as you enter the maze!

Maybe I'm just dense, but I don't see how

the middle of three doors could be number 1

However, I made it to the decorated door with the combo lock. there was an earlier hint
Spoiler
"Remember the different chapters as you played through them. This gives the correct answer"

but I don't know what that means. (Also I didn't pick up any objects in chapter 9.) Help!
OK, did it by main force and awkwardness. In retrospect, still don't know why that was the combination.
Anyway, finished.
