I just got that cool painting pad for pc as a birthday-present and started messing around with it. I'll share my first steps of digital painting here with you all :D. It's not finished, but I thougt I might get some comments and critcs on it though, so I could change some things while finishing it:

It took maybe 3 hours of work... As I said, I'm a complete noob, I just got this pad unwrapped for a few hours. It's been done with photoshop, of course. What do you think?

I'd say for a complete n00b you're doing way better than I ever could! ;)

What you've completed thus far is a very good rendition of Harrison Ford as played by Indiana Jones.

The only critiquing I have is that the dirt smudge on his left (the right) cheek seems to stand out a lot...maybe you could soften that a bit. And also the hair directly beneath his lip seems less like chin hair and more like...a horrible disfiguring scab.

Other than that great work!

Wait ... what? :)

Good work Kaioshin, I'm curious about the endproduct!

Keep going.  I really like your color usage and shading so far!

thanks for the comments! I found a bit time to continue it this afternoon:

He looked a bit fat...I tried to lenghten his chin a bit. And added the other eye of course.

Yes, and? :P

I still hold by what I said. ;D

Another quick edit. I did alot detail-stuff, which isn't so noticeable on the first glance. I also found another source for the fedora, the Fate of Atlantis comic cover, which used the same photograph as I do.

Nacho

But Kaio, you must notice that the Fedora in that reference is completelly "miss-sized" (Is that a world, actually?) I hope you undertand what I mean... It' s way too big.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Hey Nacho, thanks for the advice. I'll try to find another reference for scale... But as a lighting reference, the comic cover might do it's job. It's a shame that the fedora is "cut-off" from the original photo  :P.

edit: just found something that should solve my problem :D

edit²: a quick update:

If I squint a little bit I'd swear to god that's a photo, so you must be doing something right. Fantastic work! *seethes with jealousy*

Looks great.  Also looks like you have your own style, as to be not exactly like the image, or the other poster art.  Would look great in a poster for one of these fan games.

Keith

ps.  What's your technique, I have a graphics tablet but haven't really used it for painting.

Kaio

Thank you all for your encouraging words!

Good thing, I'm already part of a Indiana Jones fangame and it's supposed to be used for a poster  :D. I don't realy know what my technique is, this is my very first attempt of using a graphics tablet so I just can't tell. I just take the pen and draw with photoshop... changin the colors and the brushes and the pressure of the pen on the tablet... I have no "secret" or something like that.^^

kaio you're forcing me very rapidly to become of the opinion that the original source picture you're using is in fact the only picture ever taken of Harrison Ford (as depicted by Indy :P).

To me, the hair immediately below his lip still seems off...I think it's something about the harshness of the line between that and the rest of his beard. I see it clearly in the source picture, but in yours something just really draws my eye to it.

And seriously I'd love to see who you think is actually good at this considering you're such a n00b.

Kaio

Okay, I'm almost finished, I guess. Maybe some finishing touches (like more stubbles) and the shirt collar.

Galen

His hat seems a little too far to the right but other then that it's fantastic.

Yep, I was about to say the same, but for the rest: awesome job!

Kaio

;) mhhh, I justed stayed at this picture:

His fedora seems to be a little bit too far on the right. Maybe I'll fix that ;).

LGM

The bridge of his nose seems to be too wide, whereas his right eye seems to be too short. Swaparooski and see what that looks like. Or not. But this is really good stuff.

This is a great piece of work, kaioshin. My only criticism would be that the indentation on the left side of the hat looks strange - sort of swirly shaped. The problem is to some degree also present in the poster that you're using for reference (and is - perhaps - in part an illusion due to the unclear light sources of the drawing). Though the very hard and highlighted bottom crease in your version makes it stand out more.

I think you'd be better off working from a real photo than the poster. Even if the light angle is different from your original reference, it gives a much a clearer impression of how simple the shape of the fedora really is. Keep in mind that the indentations (top crease and sides) aren't actually tailored, just pressed into shape. The hat itself is bowl shaped, the indentations appear where you naturally hold your fingers when you put it on:

Matti

Nice work, kaio. But I second what GarageGothic said about the hat. It looks weird on the poster and therefore it looks weird in your work.
