Can somebody please give an opinion of these and possibly help me?

These images are for two alternate realities in a horror game I was thinking of making. I want to be able to make it so that in one reality, the rooms are black and white and look relatively normal while in the other reality, colour is restored with a "haunted" look. Do these photos look alright?

Also: I would KILL for somebody who would be willing to take up job of graphics design because, frankly, I hate this. If anyone's willing to make sprites and backgrounds I would love if you could help. I'll give you the biggest hug if you could help  ;D.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, just a comment first: I thought the b'n'w was the horror one, but this actually might be "creepier."

Well I can offer some non-expert advice, I'm sure there are other, more qualified, people, but:
- the perspective is off, check the lines and angles if they meet in 1 point (for example the right end of the carpet), view some of the other backgrounds in the critic
lounge and you'll see that's the most common mistake and most of  the artsy people here spot that quickly (not me though, that's why I try too read these topics as much as I can)
- that blood (if that is blood) looks a bit unnatural, I think it would make more of a puddle not just artery spatter
- doors maybe could use a frame around them
- oh and maybe the most important, and I don't know if it's because it's a work in progress, but a light source and general lighting always adds to the atmosphere of the scene
- other things might be a just your style of drawing so that's about it from me, hope it helps
I don't want the world, I just want your half

First off: The reason I'm using black and white as "normal" is because the colour seems to emphasise the surroundings. I'm trying to make this a horror house trapped between two time zones (The black and white being a past version of the house) and the player being able to access both through a fairly bad reason I can't say without referencing the weak plot  ;D.

Anyway:
-I did notice the lines were off but whenever I alter them it just looks worse  ???. I will work on it though because it does look... odd.

-The puddle in the middle does look odd now I look at it. Thanks. I don't know how I didn't notice it.

- I'll add doorframes. It looks bad without them doesn't it.

- I'll try and fit in a light. I don't know why I didn't originally fit one    ::).

-I'm not good at art and never was. I don't think Microsoft paint is the best thing to use but it's the easiest.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I'll address those issues but at the moment I'm only using these as a "fall back". I'd really love if someone else could do backgrounds along this design instead.

I think I have solved a couple of perspective issues (I don't pretend to be any good at perspective I just try a few simple rules and the results seem to look ok (I can only seem to do 1 point perspective also))

I did this using the same method I layed out in this post

How many BG are you looking at making?

As for the coloured one (I desaturated the colours a little):

But the B&W one I feel is quite lifeless (and not in a good way) if it was me Id show it like this:

But it's your game :)

Hudders

What is the red stuff on the floor supposed to be? Blood?

At the moment, it looks a bit like someone dropped a load of liquorice.

Revan

Yeah, I just did a quick paint over zoomed in lol.. have only just seen the mess haha

Jakerpot

man, you perspective is really wrong. Take a look on my topic about my basement backgrond in the critics lounge. It has a "tutorial" about perspective, if you want to correct it, of course! I took the freedom to make a paint over on it and change the red liquid to blood. I vanished the black outlines. I don't like them anymore. You shouldn't like them too. I wish you like it.

EDIT: Never use jpg. they suck.

Erm did you paint over my paint over and just change the perspective of the door?  ???

Woah. That looks WAY better than mine. Like I said it's only just a rough draft at the moment as I'm looking for someone to do backgrounds for me. And yes to everyone, the blood effects are the worst you'll ever see in a game. And YES the perspective is wrong. I never said I was good at art. Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Also,
The black and white is pretty lifeless I thought but I can't really liven it up with anything. Also, I'm looking to make around 8 backgrounds and their "horror" look.

Edit by ProgZ:  Please don't quote entire posts, especially images.  A single image reference is okay but unnecessary since most of the threads never get long enough to be confusing.  Thanks!

What did you think towards living them up with the sepia colour and scratching shadows effect?

Also if it's just 8 bg draw them, through them up and im sure people will make sure ur perspective is correct amongst other things..

I think I might go for the brown-ish effect but I'm not sure I like the scratching shadows effect.

If you really just want to do 8ish bg and not do them yourself, PM me the 8 that you draw (B&W and 'horror' coloured (so16 really)) and I will bring them up to this standard within a day of receiving them. It's up to you, I would always urge people to try themselves as this helps you gain skills. But it is your decision.

krishaw

Thanks! I will try and do them first though. But I really would like a hand in just cleaning them up a little if you don't mind.

Thats fine.. and as i said Im sure others will lend a helping hand.. :)

Kastchey

I toyed with your background a little bit because I found it sort of inspiring.. Anyway, I don't know if you'll find this useful, but here goes:

I made a small perspective adjustment and added a light source. Also shaded the outlines and did some other minor changes.

krishaw

Thanks! I'll use it.

Edit:

I made only the slightest change, the thing on the bottom right was supposed to be a lever. My fault really.

I also did the "Other" version in sepia. I know it looks bland but it's only use is to be at the start of the game. Anyway, tell me what I can do. Thanks again Kastchey, I like that shot.

Hudders

I like it.

One thing that bothers me though is the depth of the cupboard. Looks a bit big.

poc301

Just wanted to chime in at Kastchey..

I really like the changes you made, with the light source and such.  It really made it pop.
