I didn't quite catch on to this so can someone clarify, if I want to join in do I have to install all these fancy thingamaboings or can I use my original SC client somehow? Given I didn't read the whole thread through if it's in there somewhere but I do own a copy and have it installed and all so...

Iccup.com allows to get a free multiplayer-only version of SC. Additionally it provides special "anti-cheat" launcher that opens an ability to play on iccup's battle.net gateway, called "Abyss", for free. I am not a specialist here, but I guess that if you want to play with others, who own only free iccup game, you must download that launcher (not the entire free game) and configure it to run your full legal copy of SC. When you start MP game, just select "Abyss" gateway instead of Europe, US, or whatever are there.

Alternatively you can download GameRanger software. It just allows to meet friends and make matches more easier, in my opinion, it does not add anything to SC itself.

Exactly, go to iccup.com and look for directions on how to get started playing StarCraft online. You can download a tiny little tool that will enable your installed SC client to access their servers instead of the standard bnet (you can still go on bnet of course). Then we can play.

You can then also choose to download Game Ranger, another tiny little program, on top of that and that way we can play even more comfortably, but both ways work.

SC2 beta is released, and I am being watching SC2 replays on youtube. Yummy! Makes me want play SC1 again

Usually I played Zerg, but now trying other races.

Also, on SC2, how do you think it's shaping up? I was dubious about the Terran infantry units, until I found out that a group of Reapers can take down a building in about two hits, and Marauders cut through anything vaguely armoured like a hot knife through butter.
