Phased-delayed-something sound effect?

Since it's quite specific and hard to describe, I skipped "ask something" thread and made a new one.

There's a sound effect/filter I'm trying to find/replicate. What I don't know is how it's called or made.
And, I cannot provide anything to show it.

It sounds like reverb/echo, but when echo comes AFTER spoken words, here it comes BEFORE, gets louder and louder and has this ethereal-phasing-in-futuristic feel. Like someone's repeating some words on radio and you turn volume up while tuning in to a better reception also...
It's heard rarely on horror/sci-fi movies (ghosts speaking!) and more in some games, like alien woman briefing in Supreme Commander, and a bit in briefings in Metal Fatigue and so on. Also, it sounds somewhat robotic/mechanized/vocoded.

I hope anyone has a clue what I'm talking about! If you think you might have an idea, post a youtube link/sound clip/whatever for verification

Also, if so, does anyone know how to reproduce this? Is it some tedious technique using usual reverb/delay/flanger/vocoder mix or simply a VSTi plugin/vodocer preset I could use? Even correct technical name for this would help!

I think I know which effect you're talking about. I'm not sure if there's a specific plugin that deals with it but you could try to build an effect chain and replicate it yourself.

First of all, the effect comes slightly before the actual words being spoken/sung. That would probably indicate that it isn't a realtime filter.
Some characteristics would probably be a limited attack (fade in), echo/reverb and other effects distorting the sound (phaser, distortion, vocoder).

Do you use FL Studio? If you do, I could try to replicate the effect and send you the .flp file or tell you what I used if I succeed.

I'm sorry I can't offer more help, I'm trying to recreate the sound in my mind from memory or figure out where to play it back from.

Why not reverse the sound, add reverb, then reverse it again?

You. Me. Denny's.

There are a bunch of videos on youtube on how to do this. Reversing the audio clip, then adding delay or reverb, then reversing the clip back to normal will result in something close.

The better option, IMHO, is software or effects processors that have a live reverse. Starting at 2:45 in this video of the EHX Cathedral,  you can hear an example of the dry signal mixed in, then a few seconds later he turns down the dry mix, and you can hear just the wet, reversed signal. I'm not sure of any commercial software or plugins that do the same thing, but I'm positive they're out there, and most certainly will sound more like what I think you're trying for than trying to reverse audio clips and reverberate them.

Thanksss!! Reverse Reverb it is!

Yeah, it's quite simple to do with FL Studio I see.
I tried and it worked just like I wanted.

Plus, it's helluva awesome effect.
