What an amazing city! I just came here a few days ago and wow, I've been wandering around for a few days now and it's just an amazing place, isn't it?

Any of you AGSers from Berlin? Or have been there? If so, are there any cool places you'd recommend me going to see? Preferably non-touristy places :) I've already explored Mitte quite a good deal, and I'm currently staying in Kreuzburg.

I'd love to know of any pubs or other free venues (I'm very poor) that might play live music etc...

Yeah I love Berlin even though I've only been there once. It's a great cultural city.

Cuiki

I was in Berlin last summer and I loved it. It depends on your likings but I recommend you to visit a place called Yamm, another (a bit alternative) place called Zapata or something and to go on the Alternative Berlin tour. We stayed in Kreuzberg too. I'm sure you can find a lot of info in the brochures laying around the hostel. You can also find names of places where you can go out. I don't recall them being that cheap, though, we didn't check everything. I remember Magneto and Carrera and that's it, I'm sorry. Anyway, you should really try the Alternative tour (it's free) or something similar. The guides should point you to some nice directions as well.
Hmm..it's kinda steep. But with a sled I can slide down the slope.

Then you just missed the heaviest snowfall in decades ;)

I can point you to a lot of places in Berlin, but I don't really know many bars with (free) live music. Fortunately, Kreuzberg is probably the best area to stay in when you're in Berlin. Next to Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, the north of Neukölln and some parts of Mitte are the most interesting districts.

There are a lot alternative bars with cheap drinks but you normally have to pay for music.

Yes, there's the Yaam as cuiki mentioned. It's a well known place for Reggae, Ragga, Ska etc., but a bit touristy and expensive. Stralauer Platz 34, Ostbahnhof. Their website is in english too: www.yaam.de

cuiki also mentioned the Zapata in Mitte. It's a bar beneath the art house Tacheles (which might soon get evicted). In the Zapata there's a lot of live music, but it's not too cheap and lies in the very touristy Oranienburger Straße. The Tacheles is a nice place to drink something and look at paintings, but it's probably better to go there in summer.

A nice place is the area around the Oranienstraße (not to be confused with Oranienburger) in Kreuzberg - between the Kottbusser Tor and the Görlitzer Bahnhof. There are a lot of bars and the famous SO 36 club.

Another place in Kreuzberg is the Mehringdamm. There are some bars too and the Clash, a rusty, punkrocky bar with billard and table-tennis. There's also the Arcanoa, Am Tempelhofer Berg 8. It's a small bar, but there's often some free live-music (sometimes bands, sometimes jam-sessions).

Around the Hermannplatz in north-Neukölln, there are some nice bars too. One I'm often going to is the Tristeza in the Pannierstraße.

Friedrichshain is interesting in the rectangle area between Frankfurter Tor, Frankfurter Allee, Warschauer Straße and Ostkreuz. There's the famous touristy Simon-Dach-Straße with some cocktailbars and next to it the RAW-area with some clubs like the Cassiopeia.

Uh, I'm a bit tired of writing now, but i hope I covered most of the interesting stuff. I don't know what exactly you're looking for, the cheapest stuff when it comes to music is mostly punkrock and electronic stuff. If you're into punkrock or electro, the Köpi aka Køpi near the Ostbahnhof could be of interest. It's a well known squatted house with several floors and bars. The area around the Rosenthaler Platz is nice too.

Most of these places have websites so you might want to check them out. You might find it useful to know that "freier Eintritt" means free entrance / no money down and "Eintritt: Spende" means that you should donate some money if you have some ;)

Mr Flibble

I'm going to be spending this summer backpacking around Europe, I don't know if I'll make it to Berlin but Germany is on the agenda.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

You don't tell a tourist the non-tourist places.  ;)

But I can strongly recommend Les Haferflocken Swingers, they play at Cortina Bob on Friday. I don't know the place yet and it's 6 â,¬, but the band and the support is great.

Well, it was a fun evening and I wasn't really that drunk, but the bouncer was an asshole. Fortunately some friends chilled at the one's home some 15 minutes away, so not all was lost ;)

But yes, you can have great nights at the White Trash. I also recommend the Haferflocken Swingers tomorrow.
