i've just watched a Cradle of Filth animated video, "Ninja scrolls" and it got me wondering if anyone has done a game in that sort of style?
i don't mean the porn ones, a lot of the violent ones are way OTT, but the clever way they use freeze frames, and the bazzar graphics, very clever people

Flippy_D

Bizarre? lol.

Yeah, manga animation is a very specific style - Slow motion jumps, dramatic angles and sudden close ups are all trademarks. Slowing suddenly for spins and transcending into lightning fast movements are also recognisable techniques.

PMSL, i've never sed i could spell, typo IS my middle name ;)

woodz

PMSL=pee my self laughing

Flippy_D

Eh, don't worry, I'm a little picky when it comes to spelling. PMSL? what does that mean?

Must suck to have typo as a iddle name  :P

scotch

iddle? lol :|

Don't worry wOoDz he's like that in #ags IRC all the time.

I've been studying some Japanese animation style lately, I think it'd work quite well.. plus it's not quite as much drawing work as other styles.
Some of it can look quite generic even to me who hasn't seen a lot.. but when it's good it's great.

wOoDz

don''t get me wrong, i'm not a fan of violence, infact i hate pain but the way in these animations catch the look of shock, horror, pain, then the reality on the character's  face that this is the end, is very clever

i noticed flippy D's little mistake and really wanted to comment..hehe
i keep meaning to go on IRC, but my mind goes blank and can never think of anything to say! :-\

God, I simply cannot fathom a way to articulate how much I despise Ninja Scroll - sometimes I find Kawajiri's work to be good, brainless fun - as in Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and Cyber City Oedo - and his segment of The Cockpit was stunning (though the other two were horrible); but when he directs crap like NS and his cringeworthy Animatrix segment Program, I start to wonder if the quality of his other work is just down to dumb luck.

Anywho, there's a (so far) fantastic anime series currently being fansubbed now called Texhnolyze - I highly reccomend that you download the first three episodes and watch them back-to-back (some people might not find the first episode as intriguing as I did,  but nonetheless they should stick with it); great stuff (as is to be expected, coming as it is from the same writer as Serial Experiments Lain).  Little advice, though - you'd be better off looking for it on a DC hub than Kazaa, if you want to have a shot at it.

BTW, Card Captor Macphee - I downloaded the first four episodes of WHR and didn't really have the inclination to get anymore; I hear it gets a lot better from episode 15 onwards, but that's a long wait and (more importantly) a lotta disk-space - you reccomend I get back to it?

PS - Yes, Flippy, NGE is fantastic, but it's far to obvious a reccomendation to make ;)

scotch

I don't think anything's too obvious a reccomendation to make to someone who's never heard of this stuff ._.

Anyway, personally I'm more interesting in the best animation quality rather than the best in other aspects.  Is there anything that stands out?

Pesty

If you're looking for good anime, I have two words for you: Cowboy Bebop. Only anime I bothered buying every episode of (on VCD for $20 for the whole series plus the movie, but still).

NGE is compulsary for anime watchers.

And Cowboy Bebop is fantastic too.

*Scribbles down all the recommendations, when a perfectly timed “low disk space” bubble pops up :'(, so then plots how to lose 500meg of “her in doors” music!*
I've been scouting around for still shots and NS doesn't come highly recommended,
Its more inspiration, although my 12 yr old daughter thinks the COF's "hallowed be thy name" video is fantastic, spesh when the stone guy gets a blade in his head the slides down the lenght of the blade :-\
i worry about her lol
they aren't that hard to draw apart from i can't draw hands!, but it would mean a lot of animation in a game, when the MAGS thing is done i might have a go, along with my game, a Vampire one, art for another one..........

Haven't seen past three.

When I see more episodes, will let you know what they're like.

Don't know why you didn't like it -- I thought it was brilliantly animated and very involving.

BTW, can I call you Sailor Sponge from now on?  ;D

It's not really that I didn't like it, just that there were (and are) other series vying for my attention (such as Texhnolyze, which you all should have downloaded by now, if you know whats good for you), and they happened to be better, in my eyes.

Hehe, we should totally form our own magical drag-queen team; we could do an ultra cheesy OP sequence in flash, and everything.

Well, we COULD.

Stop looking at me like that!

Anywho, few more reccomendations here:

Berserk
Legend of Black Heaven
Escaflowne (movie or series, it's all good)
Boogiepop Phantom
X TV (not the movie, it's poo)
Kare Kano
Haibane Renmei
Ebichu
Gunbuster
Macross Plus
FLCL
Cyber City Oedo
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Patlabor 1
Patlabor 2
Patlabor WXIII
Memories
Castle of Cagliostro
Wings of Honneamise
Porco Rosso
Kiki's Delivery Service
Grave of the Fireflies
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
And so forth.

That should keep you occupied for a wee while.
