just thought id post up a pic of the first room of my game and see what people think, open for critics (its sposed to be cartoony by the way)

the picture's fine. liked the trashcan and the window the best.
won't it be hard to make a character walk around in a room with such a crooked floor?

good work anyway!!!

i think there are various thing you could improve:
the perspective is off.Cartoony graphics often have distorted, exaggerated perspective, which is not off-perspective, i hope to make sense. Very much curved lines does not make cartoony style. This is the thing that most bothers me about the bg.
The outlines are too messy. Try to clean them a bit. It seems as if you drew it, scanned it, and filled the white spaces directly, and there are some white pixels caused by the scan antialiasing. Work with layers if you can, there are many tutorials on colouring scanned drawings.
Now, i think that the colours you have used doesn´t fit very well.
Also, floor, ceiling and walls are the same color, which looks a bit boring, try to use different colours in each one and see if it looks better.
I hope it helps  :)

¿why people in internet use MP3 instead of WAV? ¿what have they got against WAV´s?? ;)

I wasn´t saying that you shouldn´t make the lines curved, just that the curvature you gave to them doesn´t help for cartoony style. Sometimes they are bent in the opposite direction, sometimes they are too bent, IMO.
I think it looks a bit better with the coloured floor  :)
EDIT: and the chair and the table are drawn as if viewed from above

No uncompressed wincrap BMPs please.

Now where did that "NO BMP" warning picture CJ implemented earlier go?

SLaMgRInDeR

whats whrong with windows bmps?
(   (   ( <( -_-)> )   )   )

Miez

they're obscenely big - filesize wise - that's one thing I object to. :)

Gilbert

Because they're uncompressed, and are really big. Take the first one in this thread for example, it's nearly 1MB in size, which loaded annoyingly slow for most people, especially for people who have only dial up connections. Moreover, some browsers may not display BMP correctly. BMP is not meant to be shown on the net. You got to use JPG , PNG or GIF for posting them on the net, apart from possible minor loss in details, they help MUCH in reducing the bandwidth usage.

Slamgrinder, please replace your bmp:s to jpg, png or gif.
Gilbot explained why, and there's really not much to argue.

12431, please remove any double-posts; they are annoying and I don't enjoy removing posts myself.

Eggie

You should try what I do when I scan in stuff:

Ink it.
Scan it.
Import it into flash.
Use TRACE BITMAP with tight curve fit.
Colour it in flash.
It ends up looking very crisp and (if you ask it to) smoothed.

If you want a sketchy look then makethe picture Black and White, then set the white to transparent. Put a Layer underneath it into a program like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop and paint blobs of colour underneath it. It looks INSAYN!!!!

SURE!!  ;D
And, a piece of advice:
If your image is less than 256, turn it into a GIF
If your image is 16 bit (or 24) colour, turn it into a PNG
jpg is a lossy compression format, so it might (and it will) degrade the quality of your images.
