Hello all! Hope you're keeping well.

I'd like to build my own desktop PC, but I don't have a clue where to start. I mean, quite literally no clue.

In terms of specs, it doesn't have to be anything particularly high-end. To be honest, I mostly wanted to play some of the old war sims like Total War or Mount and Blade on it (maybe the new one too). I've also been messing around in Blender and Unity recently on my laptop, and would like something much more capable to make a walking simulator I have in mind.

I will do some other research on where to start as well, but I thought it would be good to hear some impartial advice from you guys on what the suitable components etc are (please disclose if you own a components company).

The practical skills and tools to actually put something together won't be an issue.

General Discussion / Classical Music Album
Sun 18/10/2015 22:04:36
I listened to an album a couple of years ago but can't remember its name or its composer.

It was choral music and each track was titled in Latin, translated to things like "Blessed are the poor" and "Strong are the holy". Things like that. I'm pretty sure there was also ones dedicated to the sick and the hungry.

Anybody have any idea what this could be? The composition itself is quite contemporary I think.

General Discussion / Goodbye MAGS
Sat 10/10/2015 15:47:00
This morning I passed on MAGS Hostship to Stupot.

I have been very busy lately, and I am getting to the stage where I need to make some important decisions for my future - so it doesn't look like I'll any longer be able to give the competition (and entrants!) the attention it truly deserves.

Dualnames made me MAGS host when I was just 15, and a lot has changed over those 5 years (and 60 competitions). I don't intend to be sentimental, but in some ways I grew up through those confusing years with the competition always as part of my life. If I managed to help people enjoy themselves and flex their creative muscles, it has all been worth it (laugh)

Finally, but what I wanted to say the most: best wishes to our new host, Stupot!

Topic: 'Stephen King'

This month's guidelines were set by Gurok and CatPunter:

This month, the theme is Stephen King. His style, his books or his crazy demeanor. Anything and everything Stephen King. Maybe the villain takes the form of a crow. Maybe the main character is force fed a fictional pain killer. Maybe you just want to feature his creepy face.

September is the all Stephen King, all the time month. Sharpen your axes, face unspeakable horrors that will haunt you for the rest of your life and make some crappy direct-to-DVD or TV special adaptations.

In the spirit of intricate rules from early MAGS competitions, there are some additional stipulations this month.

    1. Must have exactly two rooms (excluding title and credits)
    2. Must have exactly two characters

Ending 1st October

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

Topic: 'It's Summer!'

This month's guidelines were set by Mandle:

IT'S SUMMER!!! And with summer comes all the awesome summer activities:

BBQs, picnics, hiking, camping, sports, swimming, and one of the most widespread summer activities of all time:

So yeah...This summer's MAGs theme is DROWNING...

Interpret this theme any way you like:

Literal drowning, saving someone from drowning, drowning in paperwork, feeling like you are drowning in a relationship...etc.

Anything goes as long as the theme of drowning is obvious in the finished work...

Topic: 'Hendrix'

This month's guidelines were set by DGMacphee:

After Stupot very kindly updated the MAGS website, it got me looking back through the archives. This month we are winding the clock back as far as it will go: 14 years to June 2001. The rules for that month and for this are:

    1. Must have five inventory items total (No more, no less)
    2. Must be under eight rooms
    3. Must have a character named Hendrix
    4. Must relate to fish in some way

Apart from that, your game can be anything else you want!

Thanks everybody for sticking with it.

This is a short, two-player turn-based game based upon the American Civil War, made quite a few years ago for a history presentation.

My hope is that somebody will see potential in the project and I can allow them to continue where I left off.

Instructions

- At the start, each player chooses a side and distributes points amongst available units (infantry, cavalry, or artillery units), to build their army.
- Unionist units are a light grey, and Confederate units are dark grey.
- Take it in turns to manoeuvre units into position. Hovering over them shows two circles - the lightest shows the unit's movement range, and the darkest is the damage range.
- Crossed out units have already been moved that turn, and translucent units are defeated.
- Pressing TAB reveals every units' damage and movement range.
- Right-click to deselect a selected unit.

Screenshots

DOWNLOAD

Don't expect too much! One of my main reasons for posting is that if anybody is interested in the concept and wants to develop the project into something much bigger, please PM me as I am willing to give the source code.

(Also yes, I realise tactician is spelt wrong in the logo of all things, but I cba to recompile everything. I really made a huge TIT of myself there.)

Anybody know how I can search for the percentage difference between two large bodies of text?

I basically need to find out if they are 100% identical - without painstakingly reading them manually of course.

PS. Unsure whether this is fit for Rumpus Room or General Discussion.

General Discussion / Leaders' Debate / GE 2015
Thu 02/04/2015 22:55:03
The AGS forums basically exist in a political vacuum which is essentially a good thing. Perhaps because it is an international community, and/or we are apathetic.

But did anybody in the UK watch the leaders' debate this evening on ITV? I thought it was brilliant to have all the parties together, although naturally I felt quite drained after two hours of listening to politicians.

I think that the leaders who did worst were those who had the most manicured image - ie Clegg and Miliband. In fact, most of the addresses into the lens of the camera by Miliband, in an effort to be trustworthy and friendly, ended up cringey and a tad creepy.

Any other thoughts on the GE at large?

Topic: 'Sleeping'

This month's guidelines were set by Hobo:

The word "sleeping" is the only rule. How you interpret or understand it is completely up to you. It may be a sleeping or sleepy character, a strange dream-like world, insomnia or just something you can do in the game to pass the time. Have a fun narcoleptic month of game development!

Topic: 'Monsters!'

This month's guidelines were set by Sox and Myinah:

The only rule is that the game must feature a monster as a key character (if not the player character) or as a major plot point/device. Monsters can be completely original or from an established legend. Think Monsters Inc, Argh Real Monsters, the legendary Greek beasts like harpies, gorgons, hydras, minotaurs. Heck even Nessie will do in a pinch, just give us something fun to play with monsters!

Topic: 'Aftermath'

This month's guidelines were set by Baron and Ponch:

Events can happen in a blink of an eye, but the ramifications afterwards, the fallout, the aftermath, are what make the event important.  This month's theme is to depict the consequences of such an event as they play out over the next day, or week, or longer.

The event can be a wild-party typical of New Year's Eve (and the aftermath would be the hangover the next day), or a bomb strike (the fallout being the carnage or destruction wrought), or a romantic rendezvous (the consequences being the quintuplets born nine months later), or a workplace accident, etc.  Think of the typical season finale of Game of Thrones, which deals with the responses to the great event of the penultimate episode, or the second half of the fourth season of The Walking Dead.

The event can be whatever you choose, but it should not itself be the focus of the game (it can be depicted minimally, for example as an intro, or sporadically through flashbacks, etc.).  The main emphasis of the game should be on the fallout after the event.

This month's guidelines were set by Dread Spectacle:

Since In December we have the beginning of winter (in the Northern hemisphere), the theme is "Cold and Dark": all games should be set in a cold and dark location. Maybe a Soviet gulag, or the remoteness of Outer Space, or an Antarctic research station, or perhaps the bottom of the ocean.

Topic: 'Food'

This month's guidelines were set by AprilSkies:

What is food to us? There are a possible infinite number of answers to this question: Some of us eat because we like to eat. Others eat because they're hungry. Some eat only junk-food because they are greedy... Some like to cook and prepare food. Some like to eat food prepared by someone else. Some like fast-food. Some like fine-dining. For a lot of people in the world, unfortunately, there is not enough food....

Create a game that is about "FOOD". No rules about setting or technical requirements, just make a game that revolves around food. Maybe it could be about cooking, or about finding the ingredients of a recipe, or it could be set in a restaurant or in a kitchen... You choose.

Have fun... and Bon Appetit!

Ending 4th December

Note: big apologies for being so late this month, I have been very busy these past few days. As a result this MAGS will finish on 4th December instead of 31st Nov!

Topic: 'Hallowe'en'

This month's guidelines were set by Stupot:

Trick or treat?

There are spooOOooky goings on in the AGS neighbourhood. All Hallow's Eve is upon us and the creatures of the night are a-stirring. No one can stop the Beast Fiesta. But the skeletons and mummies and witch-zombies and spectres just want to play, that's all. So give them something to play.

The theme for this month's MAGS is Hallowe'en.

There are no rules but the game must be set on Hallowe'en (October 31st).
It doesn't have to be horror as such, but Hallowe'en must inform the plot and/or gameplay.

The deadline is October 30th. Why? Just because I thought it would be a neat idea to bundle them up and release them all together on Hallowe'en.

Ending 31st October

Probably one of the more niche threads, but has anybody else come across Crookes Radiometers?

Mine just arrived in a massive parcel and it turned out to be the size of a mug. Still, very interesting to look at. I love collecting interesting curios, physics/executive 'toys', like the Newton's cradle, storm glasses, etc.

What curios do you have laying about?

Topic: 'Cross-country'

This month's guidelines were set by granary:

Is this a sporting event or a road trip? It's not clear. What is clear, though, is that somebody is going somewhere with some sense of urgency.

Basically, create a game focused on a journey and a physical destination. Maybe it's a high-speed race, or maybe just a vacation. Pick a place to be and let your imagination fill in the details. The location could be modest and personal, such as a favorite childhood hangout, or it could be something on a larger scale, like the moon. The character doesn't even have to ultimately arrive at their goal, as long as they try to get there.
