Bear in mind your user settings are also in play here.  If you have alerts disabled there it won't show them, even if you do subscribe on a board or topic level.
#2
Do you mean email alerts specifically?  It does seem those have been stopped for a while, but I'm not sure if the server move was the cause.  I'll look into it.

It's getting to a point where we should really get something booked in, before everyone's made alternate holiday plans...

If neither Japan nor the US has many supporters, is there anywhere else people would prefer?  I've done my best to get some interest going here, but it's like getting blood from a stone!

Yeah, all forums staff and panel members have edit rights.

Not that it's ever likely to be an issue, but there's a full audit log of changes made to all games entries, so I can always roll back to the before-editing point if something went wrong.

Quote from: AGA on Sun 02/02/2025 12:06:02Okay, I think I've fixed the issue.  Please hard refresh and try again.  Fingers crossed it'll work!
I also had to do the hard refresh to edit a game as database admin (I removed a MAGS tag). If this is the permanent solution, perhaps we need an info box about it close to the save button?

I'm not sure what you mean here?  A hard refresh should only be required if there are JavaScript changes, which only happens when I fix a bug.  Day to day, it shouldn't ever be necessary.

Quote from: heltenjon on Tue 04/02/2025 10:24:53I just posted some links to games in the AGS database as an answer to Kara Jo on discord. The thumbnail says "Game Not Found", although clicking on those very words brings me to the game page. I also discovered that the other window I had open, despite being on the game page in the database, when hovering, said "Game Not Found and 3 more pages". This seems to be the case no matter which game page I am on, so I guess the database send out the error message despite there being no error. (I am using Windows 11.)

This should now be fixed!  Witness (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/play/game/785/) now shows the correct title, and only non-existent games (e.g. https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/play/game/99999999/) show the Game Not Found title.

Quote from: Kara Jo Kalinowski on Mon 03/02/2025 15:51:46One feedback I have with the site design in general (it's been this way since the old site) is that I think that there should be a direct "Forum" link that takes you to the main page without needing to navigate through multiple pages. The submenus aren't that big of a deal, but there's only links to certain subforums like competitions and activities.

There's a big Enter the Forums button right at the top of this page: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/join/, which is one of the three main strands of the site.  Two clicks from the home page: one on Join, one on that button.

Something to bear in mind is that the vast majority of visitors to the site aren't here for the forums.  Most people come to play games rather than making them or seeking support.  Believe me, I've been seeing the user stats for the last 15 years!  While as a regular visitor to the forums it may seem a long way to go to get to where you want, you aren't necessarily representative of the entire user base.

Quote from: Kastchey on Thu 30/01/2025 21:54:06One thing I noticed today is that I no longer seem to be able to vote for more than one Best Character from the same game. It accepts the two of them, but when I save and revisit the page, only one of them is there.

This should work now.  The nominations were stored properly, it's just the second instances were just filtered out when filling the form with stored nominations.

Quote from: Rik_Vargard on Sat 01/02/2025 09:11:35When I click on "Select an option" for "Best Non-Adventure Game" or "Best Short Game", all the games are appearing...?

This is because the game categories historically haven't been very well curated.  So we made the decision to only filter a limited number of very obvious categories, like commercial / freeware.

Okay, I think I've fixed the issue.  Please hard refresh and try again.  Fingers crossed it'll work!

Those are both the same issue, just represented differently by your browsers.  I've uploaded something that will hopefully fix it.  If it continues to go wrong, you should get an obvious popup on your screen.

Please be sure to hard refresh the game's page screen with CTRL+SHIFT+R before retrying to ensure the JavaScript is reloaded.

Quote from: AGA on Sat 01/02/2025 21:20:05I'm not sure what's happening here.  @EmmaGundersen following the steps you did in your video succeeds for me!  Could @Kara Jo Kalinowski and @EmmaGundersen please both try again, with the web developer console open?  Press F12 and click the Console tab.  Then click the delete icon immediately before trying to use the form.  This will give us feedback from JavaScript, which is the only remaining cause I can think of here.  Please paste any output from the console here.

Quote from: Kara Jo Kalinowski on Sat 01/02/2025 16:54:54With the new site, I uploaded a game yesterday, and I wanted to link to my google drive in the downloads, and it works from my PC where I am logged in, but both from my phone and from the person's computer that was helping me, the download link doesn't work (I think it's expecting a direct link to the zip and thus the redirect isn't working?). I also want to edit my submission, but clicking save isn't saving my edits.

Quote from: EmmaGundersen on Fri 31/01/2025 20:50:56Here's a video. I'm just trying to replace one .png with another and it won't let me save, but the same goes for any other kind of changes, even editing the description.

Quote from: Khris on Sat 01/02/2025 09:34:49Just a very minor issue: the title attributes of the little "I can help with X" images below the avatars contain the default texts, not the ones entered by the user. You have to open their profile to see those.

The idea was more to explain what the icons represent.  Look again, I've changed to a middle ground which combines the title with the custom text.

Quote from: AGA on Fri 31/01/2025 13:30:44That's definitely still true since my post late last night?  Can you please tell me here or in a private message exactly what you're trying to change?

This was about an hour ago. I tried:
  • Updating the link to the game's website
  • Adding a link to the completed game announcement
  • Removing a screenshot to add another one

I don't think it really matters what the changes are, the problem for me is that the Save Your Game button doesn't do anything.

Which game is this?  And can you please let me know exactly what it is you're trying to enter?  Including the actual image file, ideally.  Bear in mind this has been tested extensively during development, so apparently something unexpected is happening!

Quote from: AGA on Mon 27/01/2025 00:03:07The Actions menu under the image gallery should give you an Edit Game link?
Doesn't save the changes though.

Doesn't really matter at the moment, since I just wanted to tweak the title a bit.

I'm having the same issue! I can edit but I can't save the changes.

That's definitely still true since my post late last night?  Can you please tell me here or in a private message exactly what you're trying to change?

I tried changing the title of your game, and it actually seems to have worked.  For some reason it's showing a blank screen, but if you then go back to the game's page and refresh the change seems to have prevailed?

Quote from: tampie85 on Wed 29/01/2025 21:17:45Would you mind trying again please? The unexpected slowness of the site may have caused a time-out. If it still happens, can you please let me know what game you're trying to edit? And what fields you're trying to update? Can you maybe include a screenshot? That'll all help me finding the cause.
Hi. Just tried again, but still no luck. All I'm trying to do is change the title from "Bière Américaine" to "Bière Américaine (MAGS)"  I change the text in the title box, click "Save" but nothing happens. It's not a big issue, really, I just like to flag my MAGS games as such, so people have more reasonable expectations about the game they're about to play.

Well...  There's clearly a bug here, which I'll look into.  However, we're hoping to get away from the habit people have of putting extraneous details like type of game, version number etc in the title of their game.  There's also a separate MAGS field after all, and the 'Description' field on the downloads could be used for version information.  Having stuff like that in the titles makes things quite complicated when you have 2,000+ games in the database the way we do.

@tampie85 has possibly fixed all the forums-specific issues now.  Please let us know if there's any links remaining that don't behave as expected.
#19
Well done to @tampie85, who's managed to optimise a database query I wrote that was causing pages on the main site to load far more slowly than expected.  Pages seem to load almost instantly now, as expected!

@tampie85 and I at least are fine with the US.  And @Privateer Puddin' and @Snarky also seem to be flexible?  If we also include @edmundito, @Disco and @Grundislav (who've either voted for US or expressed an interest) that's a fair bit of interest in the US.

Would anyone else be interested in attending if we had Mittens somewhere in the US?  Tagging North American previous Mitteners: @Baron @Darth Mandarb @Dave Gilbert @ddq @Quintaros @scotch @Scummbuddy @tzachs

As well as last year's attendees for courtesy, @Creamy @Matt Frith @Mr Jake
